[Expired] Giant, Stop&Shop, Martin’s: 3x Fuel Points on Visa Gift Cards [10/12/-10/18]

Deal has expired, view more Giant deals here.

The Offer

Stop&ShopGiantMartin’s

Giant/Stopandshop/Martin’s have an offer showing in their upcoming circular:

  • Get 3x fuel points on the purchase Visa gift cards.

Gift cards generally don’t earn fuel points at all at Giant/S&S/Martin’s, but occasionally they release offers like this to get points on gift card purchases.

The Fine Print

  • Valid 10/12/18 – 10/18/18 (starts Friday)
  • Must use store card to get and use the points
  • Be sure to double check that your local store is running this offer before buying
  • “We now accept credit cards for the purchase of Visa, Mastercard, and American Express gift cards”

Gas Points Details

Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon.

  • Max discount in some areas is $1.50. In other areas, there might not be any max.
  • You have 30 days to use the points. The day of purchase is Day #1. (Giant PA and Martins might expire at the end of the following month.)
  • Points can only be used at partner Shell stations. You can redeem the points in a different area from where you got the points, but only if that Shell station is a partner. Check out the gas locator for Stop & Shop and for Giant for exact listings of which Shell stations are included. (Giant PA and Martins might only be valid at their own gas stations.)
  • See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.
  • Pro tip: Use a Shell gift card and you’ll usually get the cash price; it’s especially worthwhile to get the lower cash price when using fuel points.

Our Verdict

Currently they are offering 3x points on Mastercard gift cards. Starting Friday that will switch to Visa. Most people prefer Visa as they have less activation/fraud issues and can be easier to unload as well. While we are limited to getting $1.50 discount from grocery fuel points in most areas, you can bring down the  cost further by utilizing the Fuel Rewards program (assuming you have the accounts linked). You can get at least $.05 additional discount, plus some other deals, like this Chase Pay deal.Remember to use a card that earns bonus rewards at the grocery.

Anyone else got credit for just ONE VISA gift card instead of multiple?

Nope.
I bought and got credit for all four.

Chase Pay is accepted at the Shell Gas Station I go to. I also currently have $1.50 off per gallon from the Stop and Shop gc promotion. Anyone successfully use both in a transaction? So far I have been able to either use my S&S savings with credit card OR use Chase Pay on its own. Haven’t been able to use both.

Thanks for posting this. I’ll wait until next week…had a bad experience with fraud on the MCs before, so I try to avoid those.

“Most people prefer Visa”. I guess I am the only one prefers MCGC. I unload all $500 (except the two pending trial deposits) in 3 days or technically 30 hours.

I hate that they make you wait 8 days to drain the trial deposits.

Which bank allows online unloading the MCGC? Will you please elaborate? Thanks

American Express’s prepaid product, namely Bluebird and Serve. You can have 1 BB and 3 Serve now as VIP serve card is not available any more.

Thank you for the explanation. I read long ago Amex closed Bluebird/Serve accounts of those who loaded with GCs. You are really lucky for those options are still available to you.

It worked for a while for me but have not been successful with the “newer” MC GCs which you register at prepaidgiftbalance.com (if lucky). Otherwise I would have been all over this weeks MC deal.

I prefer the MCGC, too. It looks like the purple ribbon MCGCs at Giant are no longer available and those are the ones that I bought to always get the extra gas points automatically when they had the sale. Any other ones required me going to customer service desk to manually add them to my Giant acct. Actually, I was able to find two today and my cc was charged but they did not activate and the charge was reversed.

Does anyone know if Giant reports L3 data? In other words, can this be used to meet Amex MSR or is that a bad idea?

DoC’s had several reports on this…. I’ve bought these with various Amex cards with grocery discounts (a few per month, if that)– but (with just the concern you reference), not for meeting MSR on any higher end amex card. (a potential “bad idea”) I may get chided for being unduly cautious, but with the rampaging “rat” teams in play, am loathe to put out red capes to catch their attention.

Thanks yet again DoC for the advance alert, really helpful for planning….. an esp. good deal for those with access to the “unlimited” Martin’s version of the promo.

What about having some gap between these deals, Giant ?
Don’t they understand that we can’t do these deals so frequently ?
I mean 25 gallons of free gas is good but how many 10 gallon cans can one buy to store all the free gas?

There used to be stories on fatwallet of people using the discount to buy diesel and putting it in their home heating oil tanks. You aren’t supposed to put heating oil in a diesel car or truck, but it’s ok the other way around.

Next week is 3x on VGC at S&S. So you could skip MGC this week and get VGC next Wednesday or Thursday.
