[Expired] Giant, Stop&Shop, Martin’s: 3x Fuel Points on Visa Gift Cards (3/12-3/18)

Deal has ended, view more Giant deals by clicking here.

The Offer

Stop&ShopGiantMartin’s

  • Giant/Stopandshop/Martin’s have an offer showing in their upcoming circular for March 12 – March 18: Get 3x fuel points on the purchase Visa gift cards.

Gift cards generally don’t earn fuel points at all at Giant/S&S/Martin’s, but occasionally they release offers like this to get points on gift card purchases.

Gas Points Details

Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon (max $1.50 discount in most). Points can be used at partner Shell locations.

Points are now usable on groceries as well, with a value of 100 points equaling a $1 discount.

  • You have 30 days to select whether you want to use the points on gas or groceries, then 30 days to actually use them.
  • See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.

Our Verdict

It’s been a few months since the last SS/Giant deal, and 3x is pretty good. Fuel points can be used to discount groceries as well, making these deals more widely useful. The ad isn’t yet showing online; the offer is reported by DDG.

Use a card that earns a bonus at the grocery. Note: many SS/Giant stores have implemented a $2,000 limit in gift card purchases each day (previously the limit was $5,000). They also require putting it all on a single card.

Anyone can share how I could use up all the shell gift cards of small balance? Can I transfer all the remaining balance into one card? I went to the gas station but was told I can only slide one card at a time to pay gas outside.

Yes, you can combine them. Send an email to [email protected], including screen shots of each Shell gc and request the gc to be combined.

Can anyone explain to me how the gas points are worth it? I just compared the price of the Shell station in Union, NJ to the price of the Costco right near it and the Costco is 42 cents cheaper per gallon. I guess if you have a big gas guzzler I could see it worth it, but otherwise you are losing a huge portion of the savings to paying for overpriced gas. Am I missing something?

The shell gas qualify is better than costco?

I just checked online and the Costco is only $.32 cheaper as you receive the cash price in Union if you use a Shell gc.

I’ve been told that Shell gas is “better” than Costco gas. I don’t know if that’s true or not though.

Of course the main argument is saving $1.55 per gallon more than makes up for this difference even if you don’t have a large tank.

So now you also have to buy a Shell gift card to use with the fuel points and then you will have to use any money left on the shell gift card to buy over priced gas at a Shell station.

“Of course the main argument is saving $1.55 per gallon more than makes up for this difference even if you don’t have a large tank.”

The saving is only $1.50 minus the 42 cents extra that the Shell station is charging which now is only a savings of $1.08 per gallon. For most small to medium size sedans, the gas tank holds 10 – 15 gallons (My Nissan Versa holds 10.8 gallons while my wifes Hyundai Sonata holds 14.8 gallons). But again you would have to try to get to the gas station when your tank is almost empty which might be easy if you live near the Shell station but if you don’t now you have to hope that when you pass the station your tank is almost empty. Lets for arguments sake say that I was able to get 12 gallons in the Sonata – the savings are $12.96. And if it was the Versa and I got 8 gallons the savings are $8.64

I am better off taking $15 in groceries than the fuel points.

I think these fuel points would work for people with bigger cars and who live near a Shell station, but for people for small to medium size sedans I just don’t see it.

I can see that you never or rarely use FR as $1.55/gallon is correct for us that have Gold Rewards.

I was just answering your initial question of why it’s worth it for me. If it’s not worth it for you, that’s fine. I certainly won’t try to change your mind.

You should have written originally that you were comparing redeeming for FR rather than grocery. For some people, redeeming for grocery is certainly a better deal.

When Stores like Shoprite have $ off your next order buying gift cards like today (see Doc’s other post), I buy the Shell GC which translates to at least a 10% discount (15% this week if you can make full use of the SR OYNO – for me sometimes it is as good as cash and sometimes better since I can buy groceries that I need plus get reimbursed by ibotta for some or most of their value + bonus).
Shell 2.99/gal then becomes 2.44/gallon (15% discounted GC) which is actually better than Costco’s 2.71. Since both can get 5 or 6% back through CC (6% Amex BCP or 5% Discover this quarter for groceries versus a 5% wholesale clubs on CF buying Costco gift card and using it at gas station we do not need to consider this aspect). My car takes on 10 gallons max. But I always take 3 gas cans when I go to fill up so I am able to maximize the 20 gallons.

Unfortunately, I purchased Shell gc with no discount (besides my credit card rewards) in preparation for this promo the day before the SR promo was posted on DoC. Talk about bad timing.

Got 2x$500 Kevlar at NY-area S&S on Friday. Points didn’t post. Went back to CS, who said I had to call Corporate. Corporate said they’d be happy to adjust, but I’d have to wait a day because they don’t get the transaction info until the next day. Couldn’t call today, so I’ll try on Monday,

DP for Giant in Maryland: Three $500 black kevlar VGC in one purchase earned the 3x points, and then one $500 black kevlar VGC at a different Giant store about an hour later also earned the 3x points, for a total of 6000 points. As is always the case for me, the receipts showed 0 points earned, but the points showed up in the app about 30 minutes after each purchase.

Does Giant have the same wording as S&S for the promo?

“Limit one (1) gift card rewards offer per household”.

Maybe they are testing out S&S to see if people still end up buying cards in multiple transactions before hard coding it and adding it to Giant.

So you received the correct Rewards on multiple transactions? That implies that it hasn’t been hard coded yet, which is what I figured.

Got 2x visa Black Kevlar in the same order, against my own advice from below and happy to report that I got the 3000 points – not immediate, but had to wait about 1 hour for them to show up.

Idk if they’re implementing new rules or what, but Stop & Shop terms make mention of “Limit one (1) gift card rewards offer per household”. The current circular (3/5-3/11) also mentions the limit of one gift card rewards offer for the 10x rewards on Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, and Google Play. The prior week’s (2/26-3/4) made no mention of a limit on that week’s GC 10x rewards promotion. I also checked terms for some GC promotions in December and January that don’t have the limit of 1 offer terms. So I’d just keep an eye out on your S&S receipts to make sure you earn the correct amount of rewards if you’re buying multiple GCs. Idk yet if it’s just new wording or if it’s actually going to be hardcoded into the system.

Update: decided to take a shot today and purchased 2x $50 Google Play gift cards. I ended up earning the 10x rewards on the full $100 value. Even if not necessarily yet hardcoded, it still could be bad news for some people that buy multiple GCs at a time. If the receipt ends up showing zero gas points then the manager might point to the fine print and only manually apply the rewards for a single gift card.

So I guess the safer option is to split purchases with 1 500 VGC per transaction. more trips, but at least the manager can’t deny points as they are not really going to check history. Thanks for the DPs.

The terms of the offer state “Limit one (1) gift card rewards offer per household”. I take that to mean the 1st transaction (up to 4 $500 Visa gc) will earn the Rewards and subsequent transactions will not. We’ll have to wait for someone to have a DP to see if it’s actually enforced or not.
