Giant, Stop&Shop, Martin’s: 4x Fuel Points on Select Gift Cards [Gamestop, Kohl’s, Happy, iTunes & More]

The Offer

Stop&ShopGiantMartin’s (page 10)

Giant/Stopandshop/Martin’s have an offer showing in their circular:

  • Get 4x fuel points on the purchase of select gift cards:
    • Gamestop
    • Kohl’s
    • iTunes
    • Macy’s
    • Bass Pro Shops
    • Cabela’s
    • Happy Lady (not sure if it’ll work on all Happy cards)
    • Darden restaurants (Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse etc.)
    • Domino’s
    • Outback
    • Regal

The Fine Print

  • Valid 2/1/19 – 2/14/19 (starts Friday)
  • Must use store card to get and use the points
  • Be sure to double check that your local store is running this offer before buying

Gas Points Details

Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon.

  • Max discount in some areas is $1.50. In other areas, there might not be any max.
  • You have 30 days to use the points. The day of purchase is Day #1. (Giant PA and Martins might expire at the end of the following month.)
  • Points can only be used at partner Shell stations. You can redeem the points in a different area from where you got the points, but only if that Shell station is a partner. Check out the gas locator for Stop & Shop and for Giant for exact listings of which Shell stations are included. (Giant PA and Martins might only be valid at their own gas stations.)
  • See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.
  • Pro tip: Use a Shell gift card and you’ll usually get the cash price; it’s especially worthwhile to get the lower cash price when using fuel points.

Our Verdict

Nice that this offer goes for two weeks, might also be useful for those who want to buy gift cards for Valentine’s Day.

While we are limited to getting $1.50 discount from grocery fuel points in most areas, you can bring down the  cost further by utilizing the Fuel Rewards program (assuming you have the accounts linked). You can get at least $.05 additional discount, plus some other deals. Remember to use a card that earns bonus rewards at the grocery.

I’ve had two Happy Guy cards declined at Home Depot (and yes, the purchase attempt was processed as ‘credit’). Called Happy Customer Service and was told that refund checks would be mailed to me. That was three weeks ago… still nothing.
Anybody else have problems?

Running on empty, thanks. No visa/mc deals for couple weeks now and this is almost as good.

Happy Lady (not sure if it’ll work on all Happy cards): I guess that will determine if VGC at HD or VGC at BBB.

Can you buy VGC from Home Depot or BBB with a happy GC

Yes to both so long as you do not open mount and ask cashier the same question. The credit payment key should be selected and NOT the gift card payment since that is what the Happy cards are: special credit cards.

Does this work on only “Happy Lady” Giftcards, or ALL Happy GCs? Any one test it out?

Thanks!

I think only happy Lady. I got Happy Guy today to check and it didn’t get me any points. Happy Lady to BB&B liquidation strategy worked though.

What’s the fee on the $200 VGCs at BB&B? Thanks.

My vague recollection is that I saw these cards with a $6.95 fee a couple months ago. But I think I’m going to pass on this offer because of the “breakage risk” (potentially being hassled at BB&B) and the fact that, at most, you’d save $16 on 20 gallons of gas by spending $6.95. Doesn’t seem worth the trouble for $9 (not even counting the liquidation cost of the VGC). I guess if you bought a few of them (and the transaction went smoothly) it would be worth it to some, but it’s definitely a marginal deal.

Yes its 6.95. Agreeing that this is not the best deal, but I think its about the same as or slightly better than 2x gas points on Visa/MC. Here I plan to get a $414 Happy card at S&S and convert it (just for comparison I am using exact amounts) to 2x$200 VGC for a $14 fee at BBB. With the 2x points you would have to get a $500 and a $250 VGC for a $12 fee total to get max gas points. So for $2 more you have less amount to convert to cash here than the 2x points though more hassle as you point out.
