GTE Financial Visa Card $300 Signup Bonus

The Offer

Direct Link to offer

  • Get 30,000 points when signing up for a GTE Financial Visa Signature credit card and spending $3,000 within 3 months.

Seems the points can be redeemed for cashback, making this a $300 value.

Card Details

  • $60 annual fee, waived the first year
  • Card earns 3x points for gas/travel/home improvement, 2x points for groceries/recurring, 1x everything else
  • 1% foreign transaction fee
  • Cell phone protection
  • Credit line of $5k – $30k
  • Each year members who remain in good standing will have the opportunity to skip their payment in either November or December when holiday bills start to stack up

Our Verdict

GTE credit union is based in Florida. Anyone can join by donating $10 to CUsaver.

In the past, people have expressed interest in GTE credit union in the past due to their generous $5,000 allowance of credit card funding for checking or savings accounts (now only $500, $5,000 is for certificates only). Hopefully you can open these accounts (which come with a hard pull) and a credit card all at the same time with one hard pull. Would also be interesting to know more about the cell phone protection advertised offering.

$300 isn’t bad for a cash signup bonus, and it could start making even more sense if you add in a checking + savings to knock out some credit card spend. There is a $10 cost to join, as noted. On the bright side, there is a referral bonus with $25 for each party. Feel free to leave your referral in the comments here, but only if you have some more information you can share about the credit union or their products.

Thanks to u/noonrader on Reddit for giving us all the information on this offer

I am interested in applying as I am about to hit the bottom of the barrel cards. Want to know more about their checking / savings bonuses though. If anyone has some good feedback for me, i’ll highly consider using your referral link.

Things I’d like to know for CC: What bureaus do they pull and can you freeze a bureau and get approved on another?

Things I’d like to know for Checking / Savings: Best checking / savings account, any bonuses available for these and do the hard pulls combine with CC?

I know that seems like a lot to get out but any information would be greatly appreciated and surely paid forward. thanks!

also will they [actually] approve and send a card?

I’m a little gun shy after that trolling from Tech CU. $300 for someone at 30+/24 helps a ton when it’s not from one of the usual 3.

yep… will never forgive Tech CU for that. Ok, maybe if they give us some more checking bank bonuses 🙂

I was declined for this card due to too many credit inquiries. My score is in the 725-770 range depending on where I check it. I have gotten probably 7-10 cards in the past 12 months.

My referral code is: I454775LPA (the first digit is the letter I). Appreciate anyone who uses it.

I joined GTE Financial in October and opened a few $5,000 CDs that I funded with a couple of different credit cards – all of the charges posted as purchases not cash advances. Some of their CD rates have come down, and I can’t say if they are still allowing credit card funding of CDs and coding them as purchases, but if they are that could possibly be a good deal to do. Here’s a link to their current CD rates: https://www.gtefinancial.org/personal/share-certificates/about-share-certificates I have been happy with their customer service.

GTE did a hard pull from Equifax for my membership. I don’t know the answer about freezing one credit bureau and getting approved from another.

They have no savings account bonuses right now. They do have a checking account promotion called Go Premium but I don’t think it’s worthwhile doing (2% interest up to $3,000 balance if you jump through various hoops). I have to think that if you open a membership and a credit card at the same time that they will only do one credit inquiry.

It looks like another requirement of the referral bonus is that the new member sign-up for e-statements so don’t forget to do that.

What does your x/24, x/12 situation look like?

Rick

If you’re asking about credit card openings, I haven’t yet applied for a credit card with GTE so I don’t have a data point. As for bank account openings, I opened 16 new bank/credit union accounts in the 12 months prior to opening my account with GTE (14 checking or savings accounts, 3 of which were business accounts, and 2 CD accounts). I only started keeping records of all this beginning in September 2016.

Jacob
Jacob

What credit cards did you use? More data about how the various issuing banks code the funding would be helpful for all.

Rick
Rick

I used three different credit cards to open up a few CDs. I used my Citi Dividend card with the cash advance limit set to zero for some of it. I also used a Capital One Spark Visa Signature card that I just opened for a big chunk and for the remainder I used my Fidelity Visa card. Neither the Capital One Spark or the Fidelity Visa allow the lowering of the cash advance limit independent of your overall limit so there was some concern whether the charges might post as a cash advance. GTE told me that they put through all these type of charges as purchases and that is how they all coded. Again, my referral code is listed above.

Livvy

Hi Rick — question for you. I have gotten direct mail for the Capital One Spark card. My LLC business income would not qualify me currently, but overall HH income should. Can you tell me if they approve accounts opened in the primary household cardholders name if that primary cardholder is not the business owner? Thanks for any help you can provide — I do have your referral code.

They pulled my experien CR you can open multiple accounts and even fund CDs (they don’t have good rates) with a credit card. They allow you to open multiple accounts with one hard credit pull per 30 days I opened 5 lol accounts all with one credit pull. ( I froze my experien report just to make sure) Plus I never donated 10$ to join. If you are using a chase card to fund your account do not put a CA limit as it will originally post as a CA and then revert back to a purchase. Great way to fund an account with 5000$ with a card that earns 2% cash back that is 100$ an account plus you can reach MSR to add more value. They don’t accept Amex or discover. Only visa and MasterCard. Do not pay your credit card statement directly from the GTE account that you used to fund it I have heard reports of people getting their accounts shut down. (I honestly don’t know how they would figure it out but just to be safe) hope this helps if you plan on signing up can you please use my referral link is

Reiterating my speculation on attempting to combine hard pulls: Credit unions typically do a hard pull when non-existing members open a checking/savings account. If you’re gonna go for credit card + checking + savings and don’t have an existing account with GTE, probably worth applying for the credit card first. If establishing a credit card account makes you a member in the ‘eyes’ of their algorithms, maybe it won’t trigger a second hard pull when going for checking + savings.

Or call GTE (888-871-2690) to see if they’d combine all three apps into one hard pull if applying via phone, though not sure their reps would know the answer being that GTE is just being exposed to the hardpull-minded community.

Max martori
Max martori

I believe it is just the opposite most banks including CUs want folks who are already customers therefore rather get a bank with GTE first

NoonRadar
NoonRadar

All other things (like credit & risk score) being equal, getting any type of account first should increase the chances of that financial institution approving you for a second type of account later. As to how that works in practice with GTE/a specific bank, it’d depend on their guidelines if it gets to a human and their coded practices/algorithms as far as auto-approvals go.

It could very well be that an existing liquid account might increase the chances of GTE auto-approving a credit card application that was otherwise on the border of their model and would be denied. But I wouldn’t bet on a <30 days old checking + savings being a significant factor in a bank approving someone for a credit app that would otherwise be denied.

Our speculations aside, if we get more data points of GTE not doing additional hard pulls for credit apps if done within 30 days of a checking/savings app, it makes sense to do the checking/savings first, at least there wouldn't be any reason not to.

The $25 referral is OK but in my mind a small enough factor which should be dismissed when considering additional hard pulls or denials. In other words, all things being equal OK to get the referral fee, but not worth basing our decisions on that.

Max martori
Max martori

It is a pretty lucrative deal to get to fund multiple account with 5000$ with a credit card and then get a 300$ bonus with a credit card with one pull of you do all within 30 days I think I lot of people would think that is worth it..

nina
nina

You have to be a member and have a share account to be eligible for their credit card. I opened a savings account, then checking account, and then the credit card (all within 30 days).

NoonRadar
NoonRadar

It didn’t seem to be the case yesterday when I wrote the post and clicked through the credit card application; I clicked “no” on pop-up asking whether I’m a member, next page asked for my name + zip code, after that it took me to a regular credit card app looking page where I’d input all the tytpical stuff and submit the app.

Having said that I didn’t go past those first couple of steps so can’t say this is the case for a fact.

nina
nina

Even if someone applies for the credit card first, the card will not be issued, unless the membership is opened. I opened a savings account, then a checking account to maximize the credit card funding and to improve my chances of getting their credit card.

NoonRadar
NoonRadar

There’s at least one data point of someone applying and being approved for the GTE credit card without having any prior accounts: https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/82sur7/gte_visa_signature_credit_card_3x_gastravelhome/dvegsgq/

I’m sure we’ll get a better picture of either scenario as more people apply.

Nina
Nina

I might be wrong. My understanding is that people can apply and get approved, but to actually get the card you must be a member. Either way, as long as they allow $5,000 cc funding, I don’t see a reason not to open at least a couple of accounts.

Max martori
Max martori

I can confirm that they do one credit pull if they have done a pull in the last 30 days for a checking account ect. I just applied for the credit card and got accepted with no hard pull because I applied for an account less then 30 days ago. I would recommend applying for a bank account and then applying for the credit card please use my referral code Q473682C4Y

NoonRadar
NoonRadar

Interesting. Was your credit card application auto-approved? Do you mind sharing: What was the CL & approximately how many new accounts & inquiries you’ve had in the last 6/12/24 months?

I know most people use Credit Karma to monitor EX & TU. Do you have anything that notifies you instantly when EX is pulled? Some services notify you right away, others delay from several hours to over a day.

Just making sure we have solid data points. Thanks.

Max martori
Max martori

It was auto approved and the lowest credit limit they approve is 5,000 but I have not checked the exact amount I have alerts set up on all credit reporting agencies that send me an email right when I get a hard pull it works every time. I have around gotten around 12 credit cards in the last 12 months with 8 hard pulls (I combine multiple CC to one hard pull ect)

NoonRadar
NoonRadar

Thanks. How many days approximately from your checking-related hard pull to your credit card application?

Did you wait to open your checking/savings account or did them all in one day?

I joined the credit union and opened an account with one of the referral codes in this thread. I have a few helpful things to share:

1) There is no $10 fee to join. On the landing page, when you select CUSavers, it says “It’s usually $10 to join CU Savers, but it’s on us. Why? Because we love you!”

2) When joining through CUSavers, you must select and fund their “Member Share Savings” account, up to $5,000 via credit card. I funded via BofA Travel Reward ($25k credit limit and $200 CA limit) and everything posted as normal.

3) You can add another savings account, checking account, or CDs at the same time. Each can be funded up to $5,000. I chose none of these options upfront, because I want to make sure the “Share Savings” account funds correctly for $5,000.

4) Based on other member comments scattered throughout various threads, additional bank accounts and this GTE Visa Credit Card can be opened within 30 days without an additional hard credit inquiry. I plan on waiting for my initial funding to clear, then applying for the credit card and checking account.

5) I was instantly approved for membership and immediately received an email containing my credit union membership number. Using this number, I was able to immediately enroll in online banking. Very efficient, clean process.

Yes same here, only 10,000 bonus points. None of the referral codes worked. Perhaps they only work when applying at the banking side. I opened the Go Signature credit card. I did not need to open a membership. With 10,000 bonus points, you need to spend $3,000 in the first three months to meet the minimal spend requirement (MSR).

update: I communicated via live chat and yes, Luis confirmed that it is 30,000 points not 10,000. “Luis G at 6:43, Mar 26:
The 30,000 points is the correct promotion at this time. The 10,000 is what we usually offer, but it is 30 for a limited time”

Denied: update: Today, 4/13/18 I received a letter saying they were unable to extend credit to me at this time. The primary reason was “Escalating Debt” (I am using 1% of my credit limit) The credit agency was Equifax. Credit score: 826 Key factors that affected the decision were: Lack of recent installment loan information (I have none), time since most recent account opening is too short (most recent account was HSBC 02/2018), length of time accounts have been established (my Average is 9 yrs 2 mo), & the number of inquiries was a key factor adversely affecting my credit score (probably 4).
