[Updated Method] How to Refer Friends to the new Ebates – Membership Rewards Program

[Update 3/5/19: Based on mine and Walter’s experiences (and our email conversation), it seems the method described below will not work. The correct method to get referral credit is to have the new member use your ordinary Ebates referral link (not the deep-link idea mentioned below), then tell them to type into the URL bar ebates.com/american-express (with the hyphen) and they’ll proceed to signup for the new Ebates-MR account. The Ebates cookies will retain your tracking information and you should see the referral tracked in your Ebates account within minutes. Big thanks to reader Walter for his help on this. Here’s my ordinary Ebates referral, thanks to anyone who uses it.]

[Update: Multiple data points (12) suggest this will work properly to trigger the referral bonus.]

Original Post:

Ebates has a sweet referral program which offers $25 for each friend you refer. When the new Ebates – Amex Membership Rewards program began earlier this month which allows us to earn points instead of cashback, I couldn’t find any way to refer friends to that site since the referral link found in Ebates leads to the standard cashback version of Ebates.

Today, I realized that Ebates referrals links actually have deep-linking capabilities whereby you can affix the referral code to any Ebates page, not limited to the main signup page. For example, if you want to refer a friend to Ebates due to their terrific in-store cashback program, you can find the link for Ebates in-store cashback and affix your referral link to that page.

Using deep-linking, one can easily refer a friend to the new points version of Ebates. The URL for the new Ebates site is: https://www.ebates.com/american-express. Simply add your referral code (find your referral link here) at the end of the hyperlink and it’ll bring your friend to the points version of Ebates, along with tracking your referral. The link should look something like this:

https://www.ebates.com/american-express?r/johndoe

The bonus for the new member remains the same, and hopefully these referrals will track back to the referrer and get you a referral credit. It’ll take some time until we have confirmation either way, please let us know in the comments if you have a data point. Do not leave referrals in the comments of this post.

Well done Chuck, I was hoping there was a way to do this or Ebates would simply just add the feature. Thanks for letting us know about this.

Being AOC sure isn’t going to help in finding them.

Yeah, I hate to turn this political so let just stick to the facts: In October, the President of the United States used his official communication channel (Twitter) to call a woman a horseface. The President.

Do you think ebates would be pissed if i had one amex ebates account and one regular ?

Do ebate track ip? I refer my family member all with different address and PayPal and we all get banned.

Joe
Joe

Yes using the referral program within the same household is very frowned upon

Really? The terms just say that if they don’t do their own shopping through ebates themselves that they aren’t eligible.

They actually gave me referral credit for referring my mom, and sent her check within a week to ensure she’d spend more.

Yup, eBates does track IP addresses for fraud detection

Good luck Chuck, I played around a bit with this last week but couldn’t figure out the proper string to concatenate. I’ll try your method and see if I get anything.

In Amex spirit, you gotta go for the self-refer with this one

I opened an ebates “amex’ account and then referred P2 for the $25+$10 refer-a-friend. When my wife met the spending requirements, I received the $25 bonus but my ebates account now shows a balance of 4,000 MR points (1,500 is from the original amex offer). It looks like the $25 bonus has automatically been converted to MR. P2 also received the $10 bonus so this was a great money maker for us.
Hope this helps.

oops, not so much of a ‘money maker’

Just wanna confirm: your wife DID NOT get the MR account, and got a regular cash back account instead, right?

That’s correct.

Hey this worked for me! I thought it was maybe linked to the email address the referral link was sent to. I sent my husband an emailed referral, when he got it I realized it just sent him to the cash back referral link. I joined him under the membership rewards Ebates link instead because to us the membership rewards points are more valuable that the $25 cash referral bonus. But low in behold, when I logged into my Ebates account I had gotten the 2500 membership reward points anyway for him joining! When I looked at the transaction details it listed his email address as the source. That is why I think that maybe once you send a referral out to a certain email address that email address is in their system and if that email creates a new account, even if it’s not through the link you send them, you get the referral bonus. Sorry to be so long winded.

Taemi19 TAEMI19: Did your husband make a purchase? You normally don’t get an eBates referral bonus until the referree makes a $25 dollar purchase. Maybe that’s a new datapoint?

Taemi19
Taemi19

Yes, he did make a purchase. It was worth it to just get the 1500 bonus for a new account not connected to a referral. After he made the purchase is when I saw the referral bonus in my account. Sorry should have clarified.

JP

so yours is regular old ebates account and you still got MR referral bonus? Did I read that correctly?

Taemi19
Taemi19

Mine is a membership rewards ebates account. I sent my husband a referral from that but they only sent him a regular cash ebates account referral link for some reason. So he just opened an ebates account through the membership rewards new account separately and disregarded the referral link but used the same email address the referral link was sent to. He made a purchase, he earned 1500 membership reward point new account bonus and I earned the 2500 membership rewards point referral bonus even though he did not use my referral link.

Thanks for explaining again, now I completely understood. Great news for us!

Was that in ebates account as pending or Amex account?

did you husband also got the 1500 MR?

Taemi19

Yes he got the new member sign up bonus of 1500 points and I got the 2500 referral bonus points.

Joe

Welp. I’m afraid Ebates has started clawing back some of my earned and awarded cash. In fairness I was buying gift cards, but my last check received included several of the exact same purchases and I continued making them under the assumption Ebates would continue paying them. This time the in-store transaction tracked, then I got the Update email with a dollar amount awarded, but about 2 weeks later that amount was removed from my account 🙁

I’m sure everyone’s experience will be better than mine…. or maybe not. Just something to consider before using this service.

dumb question: do we need to have an MR earning card to be able to cash out these MR points?

Yes, you must need it.

DP – I’ve referred one of my friend for Ebates by following the above work around. He got 1500 MR Points. Where as I’ve received $25.
Thanks DoC

Vic

Just wanna be extra clear: you received $25 in the form of 2,500 points, right?

It let me add my account with platinum – but didn’t let me do using another email and my business blue with has MR

Vic

I tried this and did not see any referral activity tracked on my account (it’s been 24 hours). Did anyone else try?

Taemi
Taemi

They need to make at least a $25 purchase through their new Ebates account before you get the bonus. Did they make a purchase?

Vic
Vic

The referral activity did not even show up on the “sign up” tab on the referral tracking page, so I’m pretty sure it’s not tracked correctly. (not because of spending requirement)
I see Chuck has updated the post. The new method is working for me!

Venu

How many days it took to see the referral points? Are those referral points or $25 cash? Finally, do the points show as pending or in Amex account?

FYI https://www.rakuten.com/american-express loads the first page but not the Amex login box.. It requires https://www.ebates.com/american-express
