IHG Extending Free Night Certificates By Six Months, But Only If You Call

IHG has started some members free night award certificates by a period of six months, but they are only do it if you call in. My gut feeling is that this will become official policy at some stage and these certificates will be extended automatically and possibly even by more than six months but some people might want to brave the hold times and get them extended now – especially if the end date is fast approaching.

Mine was set to expire next month and I called in yesterday and they did extend it 6 months, no questions asked. Hold time was actually not that bad, less than 5 minutes.

Do you remember which number you called and/or what you said to the automated phone? I can’t seem to get past it…

could you tell me the number you called?
I have two certificates which will expire in one week.

I called today and was told the department than can handle that is closed for the next couple of days so try back then.

I called on 3/15 and was told to call back in 3-5 business days. Called this morning and was told that the Rewards department is closed. Hopefully IHG works with me when the Rewards department opens back up.

3/25 update: I was able to get through to the rewards department. Spoke with a CSR from Utah for about 5 minutes and was able to get the FNC extended until 3/25/21.
Of note; the expiring FNC was uncapped, while the replacement is now a capped FNC. I was told that it wasn’t possible to create a new uncapped FNC, even though others have reported getting 6 month extension and uncapped. I value the full year more than uncapped, so I didn’t care to argue the point.

called in, getting connected to rewards dept but this rep was no help, insisting that they have no authority for extension .. chase will review my request & wait for 7 -10 days; mine will expire on apr 5th

simply don’t understand why some can while others claimed that can’t

I called over a week ago to have mine extended. They opened a case and I was supposed to hear back from someone on the issue, but it hasn’t happened yet…

Same thing to me, I called and they just opened a case and said they are currently working with Chase to try to get them all extended.

So mine that I got last July expires July but then I get another one in July so if I get the 1st extended would I be able to combine those.

Yes I have two from two different cards, and although they make you book one night at a time you can easily work with the hotel to make sure they known you dont need to switch rooms or anything.

similar to the majority’s… got a case / ref#, but no offer of an extension

Datapoint here –

My certificate expires in November of this year, but I figured why not extend just in case.

The CSR said the code he has right now issues a NEW certificate which expires in September of this year, so he advised me to actually hold off and leave my certificate alone since my expiration date was later.

In short, it’s not extending the current expiration dates by 6 months, it’s issuing a new voucher with a September expiration date.

Correct.

I called last week, got a case number as that was the only way to submit the info to the dept handled the extension. I was given an option to receive email notice or a phone call when that was done. Opted for email but never rec’d any. However when I checked online the next day, the cert was extended to 9/26/20, exactly 6 months from original expiry date of 3/26/20. They were doing all expiring certs up to Apr 30 expiry but ONLY if you call and get a case opened.

Called twice in the last week. Absolute MORONS! Nobody can apparently help me with this. Who exactly are you all speaking to??? Which dept? My wife and I have Chase Anniversary free nights that expire in August. Can someone please give details how to extend? Morons keep answering the phone

Same here twice last week. Called tonight and success…

Complete jackasses, as if their “health” is more valuable than our free nights. Jk

Any chance of retro-activating an unused certificate or have some points deposited into account? I had one uncapped expired in early March. Booked for IC Park Lane and cancelled the trip. I did call for an extension but was not granted.

Mine was turned down twice last week but had success tonight…

I tried last week with no luck. Just called the rewards club group via the main number and got the 6 month extension without problem. Wait time was less than 10 minutes.

Do you know what dept you spoke with or what you said to get past to automated prompt?

Mine was extended for an entire year to expire at the same time as my next certificate.

What number did you call? I can’t seem to get through to them on the number listed on their website (“Rewards” Department). It say’s they’re closed due to the recent government shutdowns.

I called the number on their website a couple weeks ago. They transferred me to the rewards team who could extend my certificate.

Drew

Thanks, just called in again and the department was open in the morning.

Pro-tip for other readers: say “rewards”, then “representative” on their automated system. I was connected instantly.

My certificate was expiring tomorrow, they cancelled that one and re-issued a new cert expiring 6 months from now.

IHG customer support who is dealing with this is not answering any phone call today , was waiting almost 4 hours today , what a waste of time .

Datapoint –

after repeatedly being transferred and graciously disconnected a rep told me that their rewards club department is currently closed for the foreseeable future bc the dept is in a heavily affected area. So looks like its currently not possible to extend. Too bad cuz mine expires 3/27

Another Data Point. I had a free night booked at a time after the certificate expired. I just logged in to my IHG account and was able to move that booking all the way to October and it retained my expired free night certificate.

Note: It was the same hotel just a date farther in the future, I’m pretty sure this wouldn’t work if changing hotels as that would mean a cancelation of the initial booking.

Suggestion: try to call another country’s IHG representatives if you could speak the language (some of them speak English, too).
