Bank Account Bonuses Santander 225 Simply Checking Offer

Important Information If You Opened a $225 Santander Account 2/1 Thru Now

Update: People that applied well after 12AM PST & well after 2/1 are also still showing the $150 bonus confirmation rather than $225. It seems like Santander hasn’t updated their back end systems to the new $225 offer yet. I’m hoping this is good news for those that applied before 12AM PST!

Bad news bears: this might be a headache.

Because the $225 Santander offer seemed to go up around midnight EST, I didn’t consider different timezones when writing the post or applying. It looks like that was a mistake on my part (mea culpa): I’ll explain the problem and what you should do (hold tight) below.

The Problem

If you set up an online banking login during the application process, you can check the status of your application by logging in at this link. If you click “Show other information” under the “Other Information” section, you can view completed applications, agreements, disclosures, and uploaded documents–with time stamps. The problem? My application is timestamped in PST, though nothing on the site indicated that this would be the case. Despite using the promo code “WINTER225” when it was February 1 my time (EST), my documents show that the $150 offer (that ended January 31) linked to my account. Not good!

150 Bonus, Not 225

The Solution

Hold tight. I called 1-877-860-9753 (as the website says) and the representative I spoke to said that there’s been a huge response to the promotion and that they can’t currently access any information about it. I was told that everything should be up and running in a few days and to call back then.

I don’t know how difficult Santander is to deal with, but I am hoping that getting this corrected will not be a big headache. It is possible that a manual review of accounts will correct this error before I have to call back. I will update you once I know more.

My deepest apologies to any readers (such as these two) who were caught up in this snafu. You can drop DPs, comments, or questions below.

Santander is a huge pain to deal with… think HSBC level clusterfuckery

They instant-declined my application that dated 1/31. Saved me from this hassle I guess :/

A lot of other folks also got declined. Seems like Santander has much trouble verifying people’s identities.

That’s the made up excuse many banks use when they don’t want to get into the drama of explaining why they can’t advertise an offer by stating how many chex inquiries you can have to be approved. They want to have the cake and eat it. They let grandpa with his 5 cds opened last month get in, but deny you with 5 known “bonus” accts opened in the same time frame and they have explaining to do. That’s why they lie and say they can’t verify your identity. Send them your license/utility bill. Then complain to the CFPB. Great if you had an account with them before and you know, didn’t change your SSN or anything. What where they doing then?

I applied today 2/1 at 5PM EST and was approved. After reading this update I checked out the application info page and “Other Information” and I saw the same “$150 Online Checking Bonus” info you show in the post. It looks like it is more than just a time stamp issue; it seems they have not updated their system to the $225 bonus.

William Charles

Hi Kevin,

That’s good news by the sounds of it for people that applied before 12AM pst. Fingers crossed Santander fixes it ASAP.

I applied at 9:30 am EST and am still waiting on approval. No prior accts with Santander.

Ya. Santander can be PITA. I opened and closed my account in 2016.

BTW, besides the bonus differences, am i right that that (a) and (b) allows you to qualify for sign-up bonus when opening an account, despite having an account with Santander in the past 12 months previously but closed by Dec 31, 2016? I know (c) has an explicit clause saying it does not

(a) https://www.santanderbank.com/us/pages/personal/get225now
(b) https://www.santanderbank.com/us/pages/personal/get350now
(c) https://www.santanderbank.com/us/pages/personal/checking-accounts-07

I also read that (a) and (b) are targeted, is that confirmed? or is it like WF kind of case where it ends up that everybody actually qualifies?

William Charles

a & b contain targeted language, they are relatively new and not sure if anybody that wasn’t targeted sign up or not so don’t have any DP just yet.

OK. I get it now. For (a) and (b), you need to enter the targeted mailer code somewhere and at somepoint during the app process.

I just signed up now and it shows $150 as you stated. could this just be a glitch?

Seems that Santander is saying that anyone who had an account in the last 12 months does not qualify… that would knock out almost everyone who still had an extra 20 account going strong…

William Charles

Correct, they changed the qualification requirements with this $225 promo as well.

Thanks for posting this and not just leaving it.

Thanks, I will be all over this promo for the wife and I. Just did the BMO Harris promo now that they have online applications available. We had to follow up with some weird questions by calling in, but all is good. I might ad that BMO Harris was very fast in sending out materials, unlike Wells Fargo.

William Charles

How’d you do the BMO harris one online? I thought that wasn’t working?

Jill

I as well found this application link online (didn’t apply yet):

https://www.bmoharris.com/main/personal/checking-accounts/everyday

In the second page there is a place to type the personal promo code that you received in the email. “Your BMO Harris cash bonus coupon is here!
Get a $200 cash bonus1 after you open an eligible new BMO Harris checking account with qualifying direct deposits. “

William Charles

Thanks, will look into this.

William Charles

Actually, are you sure this will work? I don’t see any confirmation when adding it online and the fine print says you must do it in branch or by phone…

I think they will fix it or….. class action

I don’t have any bonus at all in my Disclosures. But the application is still pending. My timestamps were 10:34-10:45PM PST. Are the bonus notifications added upon approval?

Response would be greatly appreciated….

I applied today using WINTER225 and I am seeing the $150 BONUS disclosure when I check my application status.

Just opened an account with WINTER225 and see the $150 Bonus disclosure as well. The disclosure form has all the dates of the old offer too.

I opened a savings account too and funded both with my Sapphire Preferred ($1000 total). Hopefully that goes through.

Actually when I log into the application status (same place where I can see the bonus disclosure), it says Approved. Also, my Chase account shows a pending $1000 transaction from Santander.

This is definitely a system thing. I was targeted for $225 and applied back on 1/28, same $150 disclosure when I check the application status.

My CSR is no longer showing the $1000 initial deposit for checking and savings as pending. That is not a good sign.

Applied 2/2. App says approved (when logging in to the application page) but have not heard back from them. Sounds like this is typical right now but has anyone received any communications from applying around that time? Does uploading the supporting documents speed things up?

Alex

Applied on 2/1, got “Approved. You will be notified once the account is opened.” status on the next day. No news since then. Phone rep told me that their processing department is overwhelmed with new apps.

Update: got the “Your Simply Right Checking has been opened” email today. The “$150 Online Checking Bonus Offer Eligibility Requirements” offer still shows under disclosures. I’ll wait for welcome package, then contact the rep.

Applied 2/1, got approved 2 days ago, the disclosure documents includes “$150 Online Checking Bonus Offer Eligibility Requirements”

Looks like this will be a pain to fix, if it’s fixable.
