Issues With Citi Expedia Bonus & How To Resolve Them

Over Black Friday the Citi Expedia’s was increased to 70,000 points, a lot of readers signed up as that can equal $980 in VIP hotels and it was listed on our best credit card bonus page. Unfortunately this offer has been plagued by two issues:

  • Some people have only received 50,000 instead of 70,000 points even when a 70,000 point link was used
  • Some people saw the 70,000 points post to their account, only for them to be deducted at statement closing

I have no idea what causes either of these two issues as it doesn’t seem to have affected all readers and I’m fairly certain everybody used the same link. You should be able to fix this issue by e-mailing citiaal@citi.com with a screenshot of your offer if only 50,000 points posted. If the points posted and were then deducted take a screenshot showing that.

I got the 50K bonus (I had signed up for the 50K bonus) and it looks like they removed all of my Expedia points that I had earned through the credit card, so this may be happening to more than just those who applied for the 70K offer.

Clarification:
1. I had a statement post on December 11 which contained my 50K points which then posted to my expedia rewards account (my citi statement confirms this)
2. I had another statement post on January 10
3. My expedia rewards account shows activity on 1/11/2020 for these points posting, but no longer shows anything from the previous time when the points posted on December 11
4. My account shows a balance as if those points were deducted, even though they aren’t shown as negative numbers
5. My January 10 statement doesn’t show anything about points posting or being deducted beyond what I spent on the credit card

It seems like this may just be an unrelated IT screw up about point expiration dates, but I’m working it out with Expedia right now.

It looks like they say the points are pending, but I don’t know why they disappeared in the first place. Oh well, I guess it’s not a big deal as long as I end up with them eventually. But it’s still annoying

Same issue here. Jan statement wiped out those bonus points were awarded on Dec statement. I had a chat with citi and expedia both. Both are going to investigate. I will update as soon as I hear anything.

I applied for the 50k, then the next day the 70k came out and I tried to get matched with a screenshot of the offer. They sent a denial letter later, I emailed them again since the reason didn’t make sense in my situation, and they denied again. Oh well.

It happened to me when I signed up 50k points . All points disappeared . I was on the phone with them almost 2 hrs to resolve this issue . They manually put the points back .

That’s probably what’s happening to me right now. It seems to be going faster than 2 hours since they located the issue within 15 minutes, so hopefully it’s corrected quickly.

I have also received multiple denials of a matching request to the 70,000 bonus after applying for the 50,000 bonus a day or two before the 70,000 bonus appeared.

Under rewards, there is a meter with new customer bonus (70k for me), the amount needed to reach the $2K spending, and the remaining days to meet the spending.

I haven’t met my spending yet, but it does show the signup bonus currently @ 70K.

BTW – I purchased a Delta gift card from desktop for $50 on December 11 and received the airline fee credit back in the January statement on January 10. So, I suppose this is for 2020 and not 2019 credit?

No, it goes by transaction posting date, so 2019 credit.

Damn I forgot about it being a ‘Calendar Year’ thing like the old Amex bennies.

The meter is nice. Note that it only reflects your spend as of your last statement.

I applied directly for 70k through an invitation in my Expedia account — no link. I got 70k+2k points in December. Now a month later when the second Citi statement closed, the 72k points are deducted as two award activities (70k+2k).

I’ll probably wait a few days. Hopefully, the issue will resolve itself.

It’s been a week already. I called Expedia and Citi and tweeted Expedia on Jan. 15. Then I called Expedia again on Jan. 17. Only during the last Expedia call I talked to the agents who seemed to understand what the problem was. Promised to investigate. Still no points.

From the comments it seems like this is (sometimes) occurring with the second billing cycle, so I will have to watch after my second statement closing date. I signed up for the 70K offer and got the points without issue. Also, I have used up over half of them already, so it would be hard to remove them all. . .

As an aside, one tip for those who take advantage of this offer (or otherwise use Expedia points). When redeeming the points, you can still go through Rakuten and earn rewards. I was thinking it would be an award booking and therefore not earn with Rakuten, but it looks like they view the Expedia points as a cash equivalent. I already have points posted from a stay last week. Sorry if some people already knew this, but I had not seen it mentioned elsewhere before.

Hmmm, awesome DP about rakuten. I wonder if anyone has tried tcb, when i need to book something will report back

I only signed up for the 50k and had my points vanished. I’ve escalated this up through Expedia via Twitter and they’re currently “investigating” the situation. I hope these points come back. This is unacceptable imo for the people who are going through this. We essentially have to put our bookings on hold until they’re restored.

Just adding another data point in case it helps anyone. I also applied for the 50k offer and was awarded the bonus when my first statement closed on 11/21. On my 12/21 statement, those points were removed from my account. I reached out to Expedia’s Twitter team and explained the issue, and they promptly called me. I had to spend 45 minutes on the phone with them and talk to multiple people, but in the end they ended up manually crediting all my missing points back to me. The points were back in my account when the call was over.

in addition to them being the only bank to deny all requests to match higher offers within 30 days, i’ve never in my life had a card that is so difficult to read. the numbers are virtually invisible on the card. #illegibleCard #2hard2use4everydaypurchases

The background skews the viewing, but if you angle the card, instead of reading directly above it, you can clearly see the numbers.

Always something. Life should not be so complicated and stressful. It’s really hard to believe all of these issues are “accidental.”

I got the 70K bonus but not the $100 travel credit for incidentals (luggage) in December.

Did anyone hear back after emailing them? I used citiaal@citi.com but nothing communication back.
