Jet Airways Suspends All Operations (JetPrivilege Suspends Partner Redemptions)

Update 4/19/19: Jet Airways loyalty program JetPrivilege has suspended partner redemptions.

Update 4/17/19: BBC is now reporting that all operations have been suspended. In recent days Jet Airways was down to operating only five aircraft. After being unable to meet a desirable outcome with lenders and authorities they have had no choice but to suspend operations.

Indian carrier Jet Airways has been forced to cancel all international flights, this is because the airline is currently only operating 14 aircraft and under Indian law this makes it ineligible to operate international flights. Under that law a minimum of 20 aircraft must be flying domestic before international flights are allowed. In December last year Jet Airways was operating 124 aircraft, but that number has significantly reduced as Jet Airways has been unable to meet it’s financial obligations resulting in defaults on loans and delayed rental payments among other issues including staff being laid off. Jet Airways is currently looking to secure additional funding, a stake of up to 75% is currently on offer and bidding is expected to end Friday (India time).

Had booked a $800 ticket with Etihad from JFK to India for around 55k URs using CSR. The flight had a Jet Airways segment, got notification today morning of that being cancelled. Called Chase, and they rebooked me with Etihad all the way in a flight that’d have cost about $1500 if I’d booked that originally (it’s $1800 now). Essentially, Jet suspending operations netted me a ~3 cpp UR redemption in economy.

Citi TYP portal should really have removed them as a transfer partner already.

I was reading that jetpriviledge as a standalone entity is profitable. Maybe miles within the program are still relatively safe?

Excellent news! I have been saving my Rupees for a firesale deal such as a stake in an insolvent airline.

“In December last year Jet Airways as operating 124 aircraft”

Did you mean, “…was operating 124 aircraft?”

Companies need to adapt to new technologies and dynamic pricing. Their domestic pricing was ridiculous when i was traveling in India a year or so back. Some of the budget carriers in India are cheaper by 80-90% of what Jet Airways charges. So this was suppose to happen.

It’s a shame. Flew them several times over the years domestically and, even recently, the crews were excellent and the overall experience was enjoyable.

Yeah, that’s why they were unprofitable
