The Offer

Direct Link (filter by ‘Gift Cards’)

  • This Saturday, get $5 off the purchase of a $50 Visa or Mastercard gift card
  • Deal can be done five times in a single transaction

The Fine Print

  • Saturday only, 11/11/17
  • Offer excludes MasterCard® and/or Visa® $25, $45, $100 and Variable Load Gift Cards
  • While supplies last. No rain checks.
  • Limit one coupon per household redeemable up to five (5) times in one transaction

Our Verdict

You can buy five $50 Visa or Mastercard gift cards in one transaction and get $25 off the purchase. Essentially the discount will cover the fees and probably an extra $1 profit per card (I’m assuming a $4 activation fee). Sounds like you can not do the five in separate transactions, it’ll only work once. You should also earn gas points on the purchase of fixed-value Visa/MC gift cards.

The expiration is a bit confusing since it shows “exp 11/11, 3 days left” which makes it sounds like it’s already valid, but on top it says “Saturday Only Offer” indicating it’s only valid for one day on Saturday 11/11.

I was thinking about doing this end-of-day, but the discount won’t even cover the MO fee, so, you only get the points from 249,75, plus the fuel points of 450, all for having to deal with 5 separate wrapped cards, plus possibly burning an MO-friendly location with all the 50.00 splits (I once burned an HEB with one of those stupid ~100 splits, but at least the payout was decent at that time).

Seriously, doing splits at 50.00, even the folks who are really good at the self-deception won’t be able to pass as a non-gift-card. I hope this promotion won’t kill all the MO spots!

So, I think I’ll pass, especially since we’re not in a dry-spell. Too much paper, plastic and time waste, with little reward, to be worth it, IMHO.

Purchased 5 VGC at Kroger today. Took off $25. Apparently the $25 discount also reduces the fuel points earned as I earned only 450 points rather than the 500 points that I was expecting.

Thanks for fuel points DP!

Do you know if all these VGC work at Kroger for MO, too?

DP – successful buying 5 at once in King Soopers in Colorado. Did a combo of MC & V. I’m probably going to do it later with my wife’s account. It says one per household but I checked and she doesn’t have an address in her account.

What do you mean by $4 activation fee? Are you saying that the $25 gift card (Visa or M/C) requires a fee to use it? When I look at Mastercard website re: gift cards (in general), it says nothing about fees.

The fee is an activation fee. Usually $4.95 for a $50.00 VISA debit gift card. So the $5.00 coupon effectively erases the activation fee. Use a Credit Card that pays cash back for grocery store purchases, and you do even better on the deal.

Anyone know if this works across Kroger chains? I’m in a King Soopers market but headed out of town. Can I use my King Soopers Digital coupon at any Kroger chain or must I have a specific account with the chain where I make the purchase.

My Kroger card works just fine when I go to Denver and shop at King Soopers.

Trying to clear some confusion:
The offer is valid till 11/11, from now. But it can be used for one card only.

However, Kroger allows some digital coupons to be used 5 times in a transaction on Saturday, and this is one of those coupons.
So on Saturday only (11/11), this coupon can be used 5x times on a single transaction

^^^ This.

I plan to go early Saturday AM (before they run out) and buy five of these; the $5 coupon on each will cover the card fees, and I’ll pay with my BCP earning 6% cash back.

In the past these cards have auto-drained at Kroger when run as ‘credit’, making them very easy to use when the balance gets low.

It’s not huge money maker, but for me the 500 fuel points makes the exercise worth the effort. 😉

Just jumping into the rewards card world and considering this (also a heavy Fred Meyer Fuel user). You mentioned they are easy to drain at Kroger but is the point not to liquidate the cards rather than spend them? Or do you mean they’re east to drain AFTER whatever you’re doing to liquidate? Sorry for the noob question. I’m learning the ropes.

On these Saturday only deals, the “3 days left” is referring to adding the coupon. Last Saturday was for Nabisco cookies that were .99 with the coupon, usable on 5 packs in the same transaction, only on Saturday. This deal is mediocre since it doesn’t fall on a 4X fuel point promo combo and isn’t valid on the $100 prepaid cards.

i guess there will always be people who find value in every discount, but man, $50 denom? given the crackdowns, i pass. dont wanna waste time liquidating this just to get 2x fuel rewards. even MSR is no go. one $500 VGC will handle whatever req u may have. altho i know pple who massively scaled the $100 deals, i just SMH. thats just me tho.

unfortunately, as I do agree with you, we are living in an age of ‘food scraps’ and every morsel is needed to sustain the minimum caloric intake for survival in the post MS nuclear holocaust world heheh.

+1 and +1

I know it’s difficult to add value to society, especially as self-employed/entrepreanuer, but hey DOC found a way to do so with this blog, and many others are creating business and holding jobs that are adding value to society. I think those who make their living exclusively of MS are very smart people, that for their own sake should be applying 3/4 of the brainpower they spend on MS into to building a “actual” business. i.e a product or service made available to the public.

Then again I could say the same thing about all of the “wolfs of wallstreet” types out there trading mortgage derivatives and funny money (you know, those who trade bank notes that are “money-on-money-on-money-on-money-on-money-money” to infinity and beyond lol, you know what I mean), perching themselves on top of the “herds” money while disdaining the very “herd” who made their wealth possible, and of course all of this done with insider trading knowledge the “herd” will never access too. So I suppose career MS’rs are at least more virtuous than those guys lol. Just my $.02 tho.

yea. i see what youre saying and if those career MSers do make this their 2nd job, thats fine. altho i will argue they may be so deep, they lost perspective.

i was being stupid until i realized i had to do 100 steps just to make $100. had to reality chek that. gotta work on other things that bring in more income. not points.

Exactly. The reverse velocity game (ie CC points, signup bonus, 5x, shopping portals, etc), is amazing, in fact most months I do make enough in RV to completely support myself, and thank you to DOC for helping make that possible.

but it’s a distant 2nd priority to making actual reportable (taxable) profits with my startup, call it forward velocity if you will. And don’t get me started on the MO game lol,…no disrespect to anyone but I can’t believe USPS let that go on as long as they did, that maneuver illustrates perfectly the point I made above about career MS’rs.
