Our Verdict

Mazda offered a similar thing for healthcare workers as well. Nice freebie for any educators out there, remember to share with any you might know.

Keep your multi inspection report. Never fixed anything on it yet on subsequent visits items marked good. Just random box checking in my opinion

So how does this deal work? Call my local Mazda dealer, say that work in a public school and bring my paystub when I go for an oil change? Anyone done this and can confirm walking away with a $0 receipt for oil change? I know how to handle dealers, I’ll just decline whatever recommendations they make and will consult with my own mechanic. However a free oil change is a free oil change, provided it is indeed free and the oil is not garbage.

Very Interesting… I’ll have to call my local dealers to see whether this is conventional oil only, or whether synthetic is included also. (AAA offered conventional-only for free a few months ago, but no discount for synthetic oil).
I like that Mazda includes university, and doesn’t just limit this to K-12.

Pro tip: always always be cautious about the so called “ free multi point inspection “ that comes free or cheap oil change deals ! Most dealer throw this in with $20 oil changes . This is their way of scamming you and ripping you off . They will always find some very bad things about your engine that needs urgent repairs that will cost hundreds even thousands ! They do this even on new vehicles when you go for oil change . Just say NO to free inspection scams! Just change the oil !

Agreed, any “multi point inspection” may find things that _might_ not be 100%, but not create an actual issue. AAA claimed that I should replace a battery, but that battery is still starting the car months later. Firestone tole me to replace a serpentine belt that I kept driving with for over two years before I chose to replace it – with the belt never actually breaking, Nissan claimed that I had to immediately replace brakes that I’d replaced once elsewhere, and when I asked to claim the “lifetime warranty”, the repair shop said that the brakes weren’t completely worn yet. (and the car still stops, with no noise, when I depress the brake pedal, so there’s that)
Many dealers make their own “recommended schedules” that may or may not match what the manufacturer has recommended, and while it doesn’t hurt the car to do it early, performing repairs earlier than required does impact one’s wallet.

Call the dealership before you show up. I checked the ones near me, and they opted out of participating.

During your “free” oil change, cleaning, and inspection, the dealership conveniently finds several things wrong with your vehicle and offers to fix them for thousands of dollars…or sell you a brand new vehicle.

You think a pay stub from a university works?

As nice as this sounds, I don’t like trusting my car to a stealer.

This is, “participating dealers”. It allows so much wiggie/room to back out of it.
I’m a teacher and my girlfriend is a social worker. She tried to do the “healthcare workers” one and some of the locations didn’t participate. Some asked for a “pay stub”.
It’s best to call and find out if they are participating.
As well, I called and found one in Olathe, KS. He said, “Don’t get too excited, the vehicle cleaning is just a wash on the outside of the car.”

Wonder where they’re sourcing the oil filters from. What about oil.

Remember, there’s no free lunch and you get what you pay for.

I’m not sure. I would hope they would be using the same filters and oil they would if they were being paid to do so. I would hope they would continue to maintain their credibility by providing good service and products, but again, YMMV and it depends on the “participating dealerships.”

After being offered $50 to test drive a car at a dealer, when I think about a ‘free oil change’, if I need an oil change, and if synthetic is included, which is ~$50, I’d be willing to listen to their horror stories of what they think is wrong with the vehicle. I I lived in a state with safety inspection, the things the “free” inspections find might mean something, but means virtually nothing in states that only perform emissions inspection. (we don’t care if you can’t stop, or see in a rainstorm; we only care if you pollute the environment)

Are there really states that require emission test but not safety inspection? I thought it was the other way around.

“Some asked for a “pay stub”

what’s the objection to that?

I did this last time for healthcare workers and they will try to sell you on every service imaginable. That was my experience at least

Thats my experience with every dealer… They all have “their” schedules. The fool is the one who enters the dealership without knowing the actual schedule. I “love” when the conventional oil change is free, but high mileage or synthetic is the full price.
