Chase Pay-Yourself-Back Categories For Q1 2024 (Full List For Up To 1.25%)

Update 1/1/24: Categories have been extended until 3/31/24. You can now redeem points on any purchase at 1¢ so be careful when redeeming to choose only the 25% bonus options.

Chase has now fully revealed their Pay Yourself Back categories which are showing as valid through 3/31/23 6/30/23 9/30/23 12/31/23 3/31/24. (See these earlier posts here and here for more discussion.)

  1. Chase Sapphire Reserve:
    • Grocery Stores 1.25 cents per point
    • Gas Stations 1.25 cents per point
    • Annual Fee 1.25 cents per point
    • Select charities 1.50 cents per point, valid through 12/31/23
  2. Chase Sapphire Preferred & Freedom cards:
    • Select charities 1.25 cents per point, valid through 12/31/23
  3. Chase Business INK Preferred & Plus (annual fee cards):
    • Select charities 1.25 cents per point, valid through 12/31/23
  4. Chase Business INK Cash & Unlimited (no-fee cards):
    • Select charities 1.25 cents per point, valid through 12/31/23
  5. Chase Aeroplan:
    • Travel purchases 1.25 cents per point
  6. Chase Southwest:
    • 1 cent per point toward cover the annual fee
    • .8 cents per points to cover Grocery or Gas. This option is limited to $300 in statement credits.
  7. Chase United:
    • Annual Fee: get between 1.5 and 1.75 cents per point, depending on the card version

As expected, they basically neutered the 1.5% value of points via the Sapphire Reserve card. For increased value the options are to get 1.5% via the Chase travel portal or you can transfer to travel partners if you value their points more.

They also basically lowered the Sapphire Preferred value from 1.25% to 1%. For increased value the options are to get 1.25% via the Chase travel portal or you can transfer to travel partners if you value their points more.

They kept the INK cards value the same.

As always, be sure to see the “25% more” sign before redeeming since Chase also puts there the 1 cent-per-point options which you don’t want to be using.

Update History:

  • Update 4/2/23: I believe all of the Chase PYB categories on all cards remain the same through June 30, 2023. Please correct me if you see any changes.
  • Update 6/5/23: Upon login, I’m seeing Chase show Gas/Grocery as CSR categories through September 30, so this is being extended through Q3 2023. I assume everything else will remain the same, let us know if you see any change.
  • Update 7/2/23: Confirming that the PYB categories have been extended through Q3, as we previously reported. They dropped the internet/phone category on all INK cards, updated below. Let us know if you see any other change.
  • Update 10/3/23: Categories have been extended until 12/31/23. You can now redeem points on any purchase at 1¢ so be careful when redeeming. (Southwest redemption details changed from dining to Grocery/Gas and the limit changed from $200 to $300. Updated below.)

PYB Categories on my CSR have new expiration dates. Gas Station 25%, Annual Fee, 25%, Charities 50% until 6/30/24. Grocery still shows 3/31/24 expiration. Looks like this is the end of the Grocery.

Damn, WMNM purchase coded as groceries in Transactions, but PYB only has it at 1.0. On CSR

Hi. Is there any update for the 2024 categories?

Is the PYB site scuffed for anyone else? It shows line items that I’ve already redeemed and isn’t counting new grocery store purchases as a 1.25 category on CSR

It also won’t let me redeem, says an error occurred.

I know Aeroplan can be a great option for flights – but being able to get 1.25 cpp for travel makes it the single best card for covering major travel expenses, and without needing to go through a portal. Things like: car rentals, JP rail pass, even Disney tix. (But I’m an econ flyer, obv if you’re redeeming these points for J or F, you should be getting waaay more than 1.25 cpp.)

False. US bank altitude reserve gets 1.5 cpp when points are redeemed for travel booking directly ( ie no portals).

In fact, this single card puts the entire Chase trifecta into the ground if your spend is mostly mobile wallets and if you redeem UR points the way you are doing. I would change your lineup.

I’m cancelling my CSR at the end of year and exiting the Freedom+CSR ecosystem altogether. The airlines miles are getting pretty worthless, and PYB is only at 1.25 max. I do like the lounge access and the Global Entry benefit, but they can’t justify the $250 net price tag. Any suggestions for a better alternative?

Just use Ultimate Rewards points to pay for the membership fee. The NET cost goes down to $140 with PYB and $300 travel credit.

Also $15/month Instacart credit isn’t nothing. It isn’t worth $15 but I’d say like $10

And $5/month DoorDash

I ended up keeping CSR because of these.

CSR was never the best card for UR transfer aside from launch for 100k bonus. Ink preferred for 3x travel and $95 AF is the better option. Freedom unlimited is 3x dining with no AF

I was thinking about the same in the summer (I also have Amex Plat and Gold, so AFs are high) but I value the free Lyft membership (for Citibike in NYC mostly) and via CSR I can redeem 5% Freedom points at 7.5% for PYB. If it’s gone, nothing keeps me from canceling

Depending if you earn a lot of UR points from their cards the CSR can be beneficial. That extra 25% for travel or market spending can easily make up the additional $250 from the card
