New Round Of American Express Serve & Bluebird Shutdowns

Readers with active Serve & Bluebird accounts are reporting that their accounts have been shut down. We used to see frequent shut downs in 2017, but those stopped until a recent shut down wave in May and now we are seeing this second wave this year. Looks like we are back to seeing frequent shut downs.

What are you up to? 2 $500 loads per month?

Samosa

Both BB, ~4K/month on one. P2’s is <1 month old and have loaded $2K so far.

Maybe you’ll get lucky and there will be a gap between ban hammers. I would just start going full bore.

I hope they spare at least P2’s bcoz just a few days ago I ordered BB checks.

How to stay safe from shutdown? What are the activities which triggers shutdown s? Does serve work in California?

Stacking Points

No, Serve only works in Nova Scotia.

I use serve American express card and I live in texas. United States

Thanks for the new DP.

Don’t MS. MS. See others for geographic restrictions, I believe it might only be working in Nova Scotia currently. Good luck.

YoniPDX

Good lox.

That means don’t use it in Mississippi. All other states are completely safe. Use it to your heart’s content!

Did another email wave go out? or were these discovered on loading?

My last Serve/BB was lost today. In a very harsh manner, no less. They won’t even let me log in and withdraw my remaining funds- they’re going to send a check to the address on file.

October 2019 was a bad, bad month for my liquidation options 🙁

Wonder how many aunt’s, uncle’s, cousin’s, neighbor’s pets are getting an early Christmas present in the form of a check.

Did you get an email?

Joe
Joe

Yes.

During our recent review of your American Express Bluebird® Account, we identified Account activity that we believe violates the terms of the Bluebird Member Agreement.

As a result of such activity, and pursuant to Section 22(d) of the Bluebird Member Agreement, your Account and your Account privileges have been permanently suspended.

Any remaining funds on your Account will be returned to you in a refund check mailed to the address currently on file for the Account.

What did you do that they shut you down

Eric

Doc, was anyone emailed of their shutdown or are loads just failing?

Will the money loaded to BB be taxable? IRS can see the account, right?

Samosa
Samosa

By that logic all of my bank-to-bank transfers are taxable events.

Ferris

I believe the IRS prefers iTunes gift cards for taxable BB loads. You could wait until they call to make sure and give them your credentials if you want them to give you a straight answer.

Geo
Geo

Yes, you should self-report all Serve/BB loads as taxable income. Remember, you have to report all taxable income, whether you get a 1099 or not.

Was there an email that came through like in May?

I’ve noticed that if I keep using the cards for purchases & keep paying a few cents or dollars in monthly fee (for Serve), they let me MS heavily via VGC loads at Walmart.

4 of my BBs & 4 of my Serves were shut down earlier this year but I hadn’t been using them for anything else except MS

Have you loaded Serve at WM recently? I tried twice two days ago and it basically cancelled out the transaction. Idk what that means.

Jenny
Jenny

Yes, today.

Sometime around May or June (can’t remember), some WM got a POS (point of sale) update where the reader is able to determine if you’re using a VGC (at least Metabank Visa GC) and it will not allow those period. I don’t know if this only affects loading Serve, or also BB as well. I also don’t know if this affects money orders. There was a big bru-ha-ha over on reddit. My local/closest WM got the POS update and after being denied, I’ve not tried since. May try with BB assuming I didn’t get whacked. I think in my case it said invalid tender or something.

So scared. I don’t have any and still check if i was shutdown.

Hahaha!! I was shutdown from first shutdowns (back in 2017 I believe). I still try once every few months to get a new serve but I think I’m black listed for life

Or 7 years. Some places 7 years is life

2 of 2 survived. The oldest was only 1.5 months old and I was loading a good bit. I need to try some purchases with the card as well to maybe stay safe.

Jenny

Yup, I think that helps

Tim

I didn’t get the email. I did use a couple ATMs where BB got 2.50. I’m going to try to load at WM later today

Update: I was able to load at WM with no issue. Survived

Hi, this is the green card that you used or blue?

Closed my only active Serve last month, I will try to open a new one in a few days to see if I was affected.

Hi,

Update? Also blue or green serve card?

I’ve got a Bluebird card from years ago in my sock drawer that I got for Walmart bucks. I’ve never done any MS. Sounds like it still works for some people. What should I be doing with it? Should I use it to get a credit card minimum spend bonus? I don’t think I care if I get shut down long term since I don’t MS.

Eric
Eric

Yes you should use it as an avenue to meet minimum spend. I mean at a certain point the whole BB program might shut down anyways OR that they someone block gebits in the future and you will be kicking yourself for not taking advantage of it. I think most of us that have hit it hard before 2016 have no regrets and are not heartbroken that we are banned from this product. I can’t imagine just starting off MS on a BB/Serve now when I have to constantly be on pins and needles. At some point it is just not worth it anymore.

There is a notification in BB after login saying ‘Due to system maintenance, all stored payees will be removed on 12/11/2019 and will need to be re-added as new payees after this date.’.
Not sure what it means or what they are getting to.
