Card Details

  • 1x Membership rewards points on purchases
  • 2x points on Uber and on bookings made on the American Express travel website
  • Receive 30% more points with the annual relationship bonus
  • Annual fee of $0 and additional cardholders can also be added for free
  • Standard American Express OPEN benefits
  • 2x points on Uber
  • You cannot transfer these points to transfer partners unless you have another American Express card that allows this

Our Verdict

At first glance, the bonus looks like this:

  • 10,000 instant bonus after making a purchase
  • 20,000 if you’ll spend $2k at restaurants within six months
  • 50,000 bonus if you spend $50,000 (spend $50k and get double points – 100k points total)
  • Total: 80,000 points

To properly analyze the bonus offer here, we have to first take a look at the 30% annual bonus which comes at year’s end. (There’s no annual fee on the card, and we’ll assume you’re keeping the card past the one-year mark.) All spend done during the first year should earn 30% bonus, on top of the double points earned. The verbiage of the terms sounds to me that the doubling is only on the spend amount, not on the points earned, so I’ll compute the signup bonus based on that assumption.

Now, let’s assume you have an Everyday Preferred card which earns 1.5x everywhere, and let’s deduct 1.5x from the bonus amounts shown above. Here’s how the bonus will look:

  • 10,000 instant bonus after making a purchase
  • 17,600 if you’ll spend $2k at restaurants within six months (17k for the extra 8.5x, and 600 for the 30% bonus)
  • 40,000 bonus if you spend $50,000 (you’ll get 115,000 points total from $50k spend, minus 75k you’d have gotten from Everyday Preferred = 40,000 points)
  • Total Bonus: 67,600 points (this figure is the amount you’ll get more than having done the same spend on the Everyday Preferred)

After crunching the numbers, the bonus is actually pretty good – primarily for someone who:

  1. values MR points a lot (e.g. someone who use the Everyday Preferred as their go-to card)
  2. does a lot of spending over the course of the year
  3. will spend $2,000 at restaurants within six months

I’ve been using this card for a while, and it turns out that the 2x bonus is only for Uber and AMEX Travel, not for everything. 🙁

Still the 10x for restaurants and the 10K bonus isn’t bad. I just wish I’d been using my Everyday card at Shoprite instead of this!

i could be wrong but i think the 50k bonus will be applied if and when you meet the $50k spend within the first year.

That’s definitely not correct, it is 2x on everything.

This article is referring to the old Blue for Business, not the new Blue Plus for Business.

As is my comment. I have been getting 2x (and I expect 2.3x eventually at year-end) on all purchases since I received the card described in this article in January.

Yeah, in reference to the old Blue for Business card.. I am also receiving 2X points. You get 1X point when you make the purchase, and then you get the other 1X point after your statement generates.

It’s a lot to spend, but it’s no annual fee and one year to do it. It compares favorably to any other everyday spending card.

finally pulled the trigger on this, got the card last saturday. Gonna hammer Simon for the $50K over the next year. Forgot about the 30% bonus, which will be SWEET, on top of the

so, theoretically: (10K+100K+20K)+(0.3*50K) = 145,000 points. Given that i don’t otherwise have a card to MS on this year, that’s a pretty sweet deal.

10x restaurants seems to stack with 2x small business, so it’s 11x on restaurants classified as small businesses.

Take note that these are Membership Rewards Express points and they cannot be converted to travel partners. In order to convert MRE points into full MR, you must also have a card that earns full MR points like PRG, EDP, Benz CC or Platinum.

I don’t know if anyone here doesn’t already have a full MR earning AMEX card. But if you do, go get yourself 50k from the PRG or at the very minimum, get yourself 25k from ED (or apply for it as well to combine pulls, even if you already got the bonus).

I was also approved for this deal. We usually spend about $7K per month, so I’m going to use it and get the 50K bonus.

Would you be likely to get upgrade offers to other Amex business cards if you have this?
