[Expired] Office Depot/Max: Purchase $300 In Visa Gift Cards & Get $10 Off Instantly (7/29/18 – 8/4/18)

Deal has expired, view more Office Depot deals here.

Update 3: Seems the extra $10 is still coming off – you just have to enter your OD rewards number and that triggers an extra $10 off ($20 total discount). Works on any Visa gift card version, apparently. Some are even getting $20 off sporadically without a rewards number (perhaps this is specific to the Dining Everywhere cards), but it seems to be working pretty consistently with a rewards number.

Update 2: Whatever was causing this seems to have been fixed. Discount of $10 now applying.

Update: There seems to be a bug in their system double or triple crediting many readers. Some people are getting either $20 or $30 off a $400 Visa gift card purchase. I’m sure it’ll be fixed at some point.

The Offer

Direct link to offer (page 25)

  • Office Depot/Max is offering an instant discount of $10 when you purchase $300 or more in Visa gift cards

The Fine Print

  • Limit one (1) offer per customer.
  • Discount applied at register.
  • Offer valid 7/29/18 – 8/4/18

Our Verdict

About time this offer came back! Make sure to use a credit card that earns at a high rate on office supply stores. Not as good as previous $15 instant discounts they have had, but beggars can’t be choosers. We will repost when the deal is live.

too obvious they do this specifically for our group…

Not sure ebates instore cash back still works or not. Last time I got 6% cash back. Now it’s only up to $5.

James B.

Ebates froze my account and then clawed back all my cash back on their last double cash back promo at OD. I was able to unfreeze my Ebates account a few weeks later. Ebates sent me an email warning not to purchase gift cards for their cash back offers.

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

Weird they didn’t claw mine back. I only ended up getting $30 total even though I relinked my card before every time I went in to Office Depot and that in 12 GC trips

Mike
Mike

How are you to prevent this? Don’t add your ink cards to ebates instore cash back.. these are automatically triggered for in store offers.

Remember don’t use your loyalty number because they are now tracking it

dk

cant they also just track it if you use the same card repetitively or are they just tracking loyalty?

dk

I would think once the chip card is in the machine its too late. They would have to stop you before their terminal requests the $ from your card. Truly the store doesn’t know the entire card # I don’t think only the last 4 #

what is the problem if they track it? Deny on 2nd purchase?

Last time OD system blocked the transaction the on 2nd or 3rd transaction when I gave them my OD rewards #.

OD system for sure block after 3 txn within the same day if use same account number. Resets next day

Will these work on the Visa Anywhere cards? The previous promotion was for those specifically but I like the lower fees on them.

Barry
Barry

In the past when they’ve had the Visa gift card deal it’s worked on any Visa card. I’ve been able to get the rebate on the Dining Everywhere and on the 5 back cards with this same promo before.

bob
bob

yeah, but can you use all those variants at Walmart ? I wanna say some of them do, some don’t.

Shawn D
Shawn D

Bob, at my local super Walmart I was able to use to Grocery, Dining, and Style variants. I didn’t mess with Movie or Gas.

Katie Hernandez
Katie Hernandez

Shawn, I just grabbed a couple of Style. What is the pin number? Anything different in the VGC –> MO process than a regular variable VGC? Thank you!!

T

pin is last 4 digits

James B.

Some have had issues using the dining variant. Try one at you local WM before scaling.

Do they have $300 cards in store, or is it buy $200 x2?

Jennifer
Jennifer

200 x 2

Phill

The latter

Vampire
Vampire

it would be sweet if they had 300 or 500 variances, short answer for your questions is no. they don’t have 300 cards.

Ken
Ken

OD used to carry $500 variables and then stopped when they found out people bought them for MSing. OD went even further and hard-coded their POS systems to reject prepaid gift cards.

Vampire
Vampire

How did they know the MSing and why would they care about how you use the VGC once they sell it to you? It is no their business anymore. Staples don’t carry 500 VGC either. They may find the profit is low on those cards? Not sure. Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, Safeway, Kroger, HEB, all have 500 VGC and they never cared what you are going to do with them. Am I right?

James B.

My guess is customer acquisition costs and margin. These businesses sell gift cards to bring customers into their stores to purchase additional merchandise. MS does not serve this purpose and thus some stores stopped selling the 500 VGCs.

T
T

I’m surprised gift card brings people to the door. I always thought it was the other way around. You go to the store to make your normal purchase and oh hey there’s the gift card rack, I’ll get some Chipotle, Buffalo Wild Wing, and Sephora while I’m at it

Ann
Ann

I agree with “T”. There are too many stores selling other stores’ GCs these days, and generally no way to be sure if specific store X will carry specific store Y’s cards if you haven’t already looked for it there before. Most GC buys are likely on impulse, and the selling store gets to keep some cut of the value.

P
P

The $10 barely pays for the fees on two Visa cards and since I don’t have a card that earns bonus on these stores I guess it’s not worth it for me.

Shawn D
Shawn D

Yeah, wish they had higher denominations or made it $200 rather than $300. Without a 5% Ink or needing to hit MSR on a new card it’s not worth it.

Vampire
Vampire

They used to have 15 off 300 as the standard promotion for the past year or so. Now it is 10 off 300, not as attractive since there is marginal profit. like P said, 10 can barely cover the fees. Staples 10% is a much better deal and hopefully they run similar VGC promo next week on back to school events. In general , for school supplies, Staples have better prices. On the same shopping trip you then can grab a few VGC if they are on promotion. Hopefully Staples will run better promo, for example, 15 off 300 or 20 off 400 even sweeter.

Tall T
Tall T

Yeah the 5x ink or 5% amex cb is really the only play here, otherwise it’s too much of a hassle to deal with the $200 cards for 1x.

I’ll be taking advantage of it for meeting MSR. Slightly lower costs, but not enough for me to bother with more than 1 stop each day during the promo.

Does OD allow split tender payment on these? Would want to put $50 on AMEX to use the 10%/$5 back offer and then put the balance on Ink.

Ken
Ken

Yes. I’ve done it many times.

It depends on your region. Only way to find out is to try it first.
Our region is hardcoded NOT to allow it. I have very friendly stores that the managers / supervisors even though they believe the ability has been eliminated in our region since late 2016, they are willing to try and then flip over the screen to let me see the Big Red Message.

So go to a friendly store and try it.

Sam
Sam

My main concern is I now can’t do a split pay in Walmart. I will be stuck with many GCs for a very long time if I don’t liquidate soon. No WM is friendly towards me now. I was told they will lose their jobs if they allow me to split pay.

Alternatives other than regular spend?

Ann
Ann

Pay your bills online? Cable/phone companies are happy to take partial payments from any cards you want to throw at them.

Ken
Ken

Are you saying you can’t do multiple payments on MOs at WM? Some WMs, at least a couple near where I live, allow up to 5 cards for $500 variable VGCs, each has a $4.95 fee. Check with a friendly cashier first before buying the GCs. Good luck.

Some banks, like Chase, allows debit cards for funding when you open a checking/saving account.

Alternatively you can donate unused GCs to DoC. I’m sure they’ll take them in a heartbeat. J/K.

wangxinqing
wangxinqing

What? Are you sure you can use FIVE different cards in a single transaction when purchasing MOs? I heard that all Walmart only allows no more than four swipes for a single transaction. I usually use four VGCs for purchasing MOs in a single transaction. Maybe they changed their policy recently?

calwatch
calwatch

No, they are draining VGC to purchase another VGC. Seems like an extra step IMHO.

Ken
Ken

I meant to say some WMs allow up to 5 cards to pay for a prepaid GC or a merchandise. I use this method to consolidate low denomination GCs into high ones. It’s an extra step and fees, but less hassle when liquidating.

Nate

other local groceries that sell money orders, multiple serve or bluebird transactions/runs. I usually do a 2x serve loads at FD and WM and just make a run of 2 or 3 of them if I can’t get 800 money order at wm

Awesome. Gonna go full ham on this one. 40k UR minimum I’m after to pay for my $500 Disney tickets this fall.

I’m going to have to take the $4 loss for two $200 gift cards. I need to hit a $5k minimum spend on my Amex and regularly shop at Costco which is Visa only.

James B.

Amex has been cracking down on purchasing gift cards to meet minimum spend. Be careful with Amex.

CtownBin
CtownBin

I’m pretty sure AMEX has Level 3 data at OD/OM. If they do, NOT wise to meet minimum spend there these days, they may not give it to you or claw it back later.

James B.

+1. I believe Doc confirmed earlier this year that Amex receives Level 3 data from OD/OM.

Chris
Chris

Does this go for retention offers with Amex as well? I’ve known about avoiding MS for minimum spend on Amex for awhile, but I haven’t heard d whether it’s also a risk for retention offers.

I need $1,000 in spend on an Amex for a retention offer. I would do it organically, but I’m also trying to meet the minimum on the USB AR so that’s taking up all organic spending. Thanks.

dan
dan

give it a try to see if MR pt is posted; if so, it’s considered eligible/quaified spend

fll
fll

Not necessary. On the SPG Biz card the spend at either Simon or OD always earn the regular pts but NEVER earn bonuses such as $30 statement credit for $3000 spend in a month for each consecutive month total 6.
Never see the statement credit posted.
So if it earns regular pts does not always mean it will be eligible for other stuff given how AMEX AI is so smart these days.

LnL
LnL

Anybody know if AMEX also gets Level 3 from grocery stores? Signed up for Hilton AMEX and want to meet min spend with Safeway Visa offer.

86
86

Currently, it’s doubtful. But people have reported on other blogs about being asked by Amex what specifically was purchased when Amex was suspicious for some reason and didn’t have the Level 3 Data. Plus, they might be able to call the merchant and ask for the transaction details if you try lying to them and they don’t believe you. I doubt a $25 or $50 gift card will be noticed, but it’s their game, and their rules.

I have an Amex card with 10% back at any office store (separate from Staples offer, but again up to $100). Definitely going to use it for this promotion as my office store spend for my business is like…$200/month max.

What card? Or Is it an offer?

Which card is 10% Best I can do is 5% on Ink, but redeemed for travel is 7.5%

DrGForce
DrGForce

Does Amex simplycash Plus still get 5% back for VGC at office depot? I seem to remember seeing reports that they only get 1% back now.

CM

I still got 5% at Staples on a new SCP past the reports. But I never got my sign-up bonus, so, not too sure if it still does or does not count towards MSR.

Can I use this gift card and then load it on serve?

Serve or BB–it’s a Meta so it works at WM.

Even with the discount being less than last time, a purchase with Ink Cash, followed by UR transfer to CSR is good for at least a 6.5% valuation. I’m stocking up this time!

Store nearby only had few $100 VGCs
