Update 8/3/25: Deal is back. Valid from 8/3 – 8/9

Update 7/6/25: Deal is back for 7/6-7/12, confirmed.

This deal is supposed to be back this week, 7/6-7/12. I’m leaving this as Expired until we hear confirmation that it’s live.

The Offer

Check your Office Depot/Max store for the following deal:

  • Buy $300 in Visa gift cards and get $15 discounted instantly at the register.

The Fine Print

  • In-store only

Our Verdict

Buy a $200 Visa gift card and a $100 Visa gift card or buy two $200 Visa gift cards. The best way to maximize is to buy three $200 Visa gift cards; you should get $30 off (or more) in a single checkout.

Fees are $5-$8 per card, but can be more-than-offset by this $15 instant discount. They usually offer a deal the week following Staples.

Use a card like the INK Cash/Plus which earns 5x at office supply stores. Some people might have a Chase Offer/Bank Amerideals for Office Depot as well.

  • Just so I understand, even though the Office Depot offer is for $15.00 off on a purchase of $300.00 or more in GCs, there is no issue with doing $600.00 in a single transaction and getting $30.00 off? Or $900.00 and getting $45.00 off?

    • Did 3x $200 Visa yesterday -- regular blue packaging.

Came out to 3x $207.95 = $623.85 - $30 promo = $593.85 -- paid with CIC for 5% back (also min spend towards new card bonus)

  • any quick data points on how to stack these gift cards like 5 or 10 into 1 giftcard to pay rent which is flat $9.99 for $3000. I tried kasheesh but no luck. they are simply piling up and gettting lost after using in few chunks..

  • I'll go ahead and rehash why this is a popular deal. It has been discussed ad nauseum, but you'd need to scroll through 1000's of comments if you're new here. So here goes.

The Chase Ink Cash card earns 5% back at office supply stores.
So, if you have recently signed up for ink, you knock out spend towards your SUB, while earning 5% on your next $1800 of purchases. I use these to pay utilities. Some churners choose to cash out for Money Orders (MO). You also net $18.45 (when you buy 9) just by purchasing. Which in my eyes helps make up for the gas and time to travel to your local OD/OM.

9 VGC's is the optimal number to purchase. It is also the maximum at a time. YMMV.

    • try groceries or restaurant cards for less fee and make it close to 7% and shop at costco with Exc membership to round it to 9%..

      • No. I'll take my 18.5% return on 6k spend instead. What is $750 CashBack on 6k spend? Pretty sure it is 12.5%. Add in the 5% return on VGC's. Then consider the 0% APY for 12 months. I'll cash out my $750 SUB in less than 2 months as well. You might want to think harder about what you just posted, Bappy.
There are no fees with this offer, btw. The $15 per $300 negate them.

        • I found a bag of $100 bills in the trunk of a car, which is one bajillion percent return. But... these are all just special cases, and not really relevant to the topic of buying prepaids at ODOM.

    • Do they check ID if i buy 6? Wanted to use P2s SYW card to hit the retail bonus, don't think they wouoe be to thrilled to go up there if they don't have to.

      • Yes, they enter your ID into their register. In my experience, them entering the ID does not stop you from using a player 2 credit card as payment.

        • I've had to show my credit card once to match the names. It's rare but it can happen. It was a new cashier I hadn't seen before. I usually use Apple Pay if using P2's card and they're not with me.

      • Yes, if you are buying 6@$200 each. Purchases over $1k in gift cards has required ID from me at multiple stores.

  • Bought 9 ($200 ea.) of these lovely VGC's today. CIC -$1781.55, Shawnee,KS location. Metcalf location (OPKS) was out of stock at 11:15 am.

  • Does anyone know if visa gift card promotion started today? I thought it was going to.

  • Worked in Minnesota today.
There was no signage, store still had MasterCard sign up, but the deal was live.

  • Can you buy this with virtual visa gift cards (either online or in store)?

I've got several virtual visas from cash back sites and I'd like to get it all onto one card if possible.

    • No, last time I tried, prepaid cards (like virtual visa or even physical) cannot be used to purchase another prepaid products in their system.

    • No, not directly. However, some virtuals can be loaded to the various tap to pay apps. The discussion of which tap to pays and which virtuals will work is exceedingly complex... you'll need to do your own leg work on that piece. Maybe FT or other site can guide you a bit.

Also, I'm assuming your virtuals aren't particularly large denomination (as in the ~$400 needed for even the most basic version of this VGC promo) so you'll also be looking at split tendering your transactions. You're asking for a lot here of the cashier's knowledge of how the PoS works-- tap to pay and split tender.

Better to find another way to burn the virtuals up, IMO.

      • Yeah I was trying with tap to pay. Some added but had issues at the store. Going to try again. What is FT?

The multiple virtual cards add up to around 600 so I don't really want to spend it down. Even if I did, I'd rather do it on a cc, and get cash back/offers.

  • Does anyone know if Office Depot/Max allows purchases of a visa gift card with their store gift card?

    • Nope. Register has a cashier prompt that pops up reminding them as well.
