Our Verdict

Obviously a very small bonus, make sure you’re getting the best rate as $100 is nothing when it comes to higher repayments.

Received a snail mail credit score report today, prepared by “CoreLogic Credco”, using Transunion FICO Classic 04… and the key factors to base the score. Said only TU, however, I know they pulled EX & EQ too.

applied, got a loan number, they called, went thru a 30 min application with them on the phone. Interest rate was higher than what I have, so I declined the offer. Still no $100 amazon gift card.

Had to call them up and tell them I did not get the gift card. 5 minutes after the phone call, it showed up in my email.

Did you log back in to their Mortgage site (https://applynow.penfed.org – choose option “Been Here Before”) and eSign the documents? I didn’t proceed w/ that step until today, not realizing PenFed had previously emailed instructions on how to eSign the document. Long story short, last 4 of one’s SSN is used as the auth code to proceed w/ the eSign process. Upon eSigning the documents (which is separate from and does not require uploading any documents), I received the GC email link less than an hour later. Can’t say for certain that eSigning is what triggered receipt of the GC, but it seems reasonable as the offer T&C’s state:

“Applicant must submit and confirm the following information for the inquiry or application to be qualified for this promotion …”

I believe I did all that when I submitted the original app. I could log back in and see my ‘loan number.’ I never went back in to re-sign anything. All you guys seemed to get the gift card pretty easy, I had to do a 30 minute phone call and go over all my financials.

The trio documents that needed to be eSigned were not the actual application. They were:

  • BORROWER’S CERTIFICATION & AUTHORIZATION
  • MORTGAGE FRAUD IS INVESTIGATED BY THE FBI (complete w/ a DOJ/FBI logo)
  • [YOUR STATE] STATEMENT OF ANTI-COERCION

Each document was 1 page long. “[YOUR STATE]” is presumably the state you live in (or perhaps the state the property you’re obtaining the mortgage for is in if different from the state you live in).

    I don’t remember…I think I have a horrible memory. It’s possible I signed them…just don’t remember. I did sign some documents.

Took a chance and did this for P1-P3 in the same household. All 3 of us received a gift card, so $300 total. I will not be going through with any mortgage offers since I live in so Cal and home prices here are astronomical.

Just got mine emailed and applied to my account. Was it worth the hard credit pull and constant phone calls from them? We shall see.

20/8/26: Closed last PenFed account since I didn’t have a use for the account once I received that bonus
21/9/07: Opened a savings account for the promo with $5 pending from hub account
21/9/07: Received a phone call from them where I said I signed up for the promo and was interested in them telling me my info, they told me my rate, then I said if I went through with the mortgage, I’d contact them
21/9/08: Verified the trial deposits in my hub account and the savings account was officially set up
21/9/08: Received a link for $100 in Amazon

Haven’t received any alerts from Transunion or Experian regarding hard pulls (Transunion was locked too) so I assume Equifax was pulled, which is ok since that is my least used bureau. In Idaho for reference.

I applied as I was already in the market for a home loan. Similar experience to below, easy online application and received the gift card about 20 hours later the next day without issue.

Decided to do this… and submitted the application a few minutes ago. I got about 12 email notifications from various services that my credit file was “updated” within minutes, covering Transunion & Experian. As expected, they did hard pulls, but they did a “tri-merge”. I pulled Myequifax.com and have a hard pull there as well – EQ is always slow about alerts, but it definitely took a hit too.

DP: Pulled all 3 major credit bureaus for me. (EQ, EX, & TU) Also, shows as “CREDCO” of San Diego, not PenFed. (Current PenFed member, in VA)

My recommendation would be to freeze/lock at least 2 of your 3 major credit reports and see if it works for gift card purposes. Or, wait for a better offer!

Thanks for the heads up @gadget . Froze Experian and TU and did this, got notifications that they tried pulling all 3 bureaus but obviously only Equifax went through. I hardly get Equifax inquiries, so an additional pull is okay, hopefully they email the GC now.

Recv my Gift Card this morning, so less than 48 hours.
    Subj: Thank You
From: PenFed Credit Union (penfed at hawkmarketplace.com)

I did not take any calls from PenFed, but I missed one and they left a VM. Suddenly other banks are emailing me about being preapproved for a mortgage.
