PSA: Citi Has Cut A Number Of Credit Card Benefits (Price Protection, Trip Cancellation & Delay, Ticket & Return Protection, Car)

Starting today Citi is no longer offering a number of credit card benefits (full details in our original post). The benefits removed depend on the specific card, but for example the Citi Prestige has had the following benefits cut :

  • Worldwide Car Rental Insurance
  • Trip Cancellation & Interruption Protection
  • Worldwide Travel Accident Insurance
  • Trip Delay Protection
  • Baggage Delay Protection
  • Lost Baggage Protection
  • Medical Evacuation
  • Citi® Price Rewind
  • 90 Day Return Protection
  • Missed Event Ticket Protection
  • Roadside Assistance Dispatch Service
  • Travel & Emergency Assistance

Citi announced 1:1 point transfers for Citi Doublecash holders today and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some other things added to make up for the loss of these benefits being removed.

Some benefits maybe coming back sometime? Maybe, but not certain yet. Someone got told this by a Citi agent, see this FlyerTalk thread for details: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/citi-thankyou-rewards/1989680-citi-reinstate-cancelled-protection-benefits.html

So are Citi TYP cards 30 or 60 days to get the full A Fee refunded now?

Are purchases made on the 21st or before still covered even if they are still pending to post and technically post after the 21st?

Haha. I’m going to try but wondering if Citi wants it to make purchases by 21st or post by 21st. If not, I’m going to return things and use another card.

It’s based on the order date on the receipt

Perfect! Do you know where it says this? They typically ask for billing statement too and I’m worried about the posting date saying it’s after then21st because things are still pending as of now.

William can you do a post in week to share which cards are the best for these types of benefits. I had 4 citi cards and now they seem useless for traveling. thank you!

We have dedicated posts on many of these benefits. Linked here https://www.doctorofcredit.com/credit-card-benefits-extended-warranty-protection-review/

For extended warranty I found the Visa Signature benefits explicitly exclude anything that becomes part of the real estate through plumbing or wiring … so it seems to exclude appliances and central a/c.. so Fidelity, Quicksilver, etc. are out. I guess Amex and Chase might be still ok,.though not sure of the actual length of extension.

They’ve had price protection in CSR for sure as I’ve claimed it many times in the past. But they also yanked it out following others

That’s a pretty drastic cut in benefits. I don’t know how they plan on retaining their existing user base.

They plan on making interest income off the the revolving balances they’ve built up the past decade since the recession. If a few transactors don’t like it, they probably dont care. Interest on balances is clearly the focus, these days.

Citi’s profitable user base didn’t know these benefits existed in the first place. Most of these benefits simply weren’t sustainable to people who learned they existed or systematically automated benefit collection. I alone have collected thousands in benefits across the price protection, return protection and warranty protection benefits over the last few years through relatively ordinary purchases.

They have also reduced the mortgage payment benefit. You can no longer redeem thank you points for one cent per point for mortgage payment. I’m not sure what the new ratio is but it’s significantly worse. The rep I spoke with said this change went into effect “last month.” With all of the reduced benefits, I will be canceling both of my Citi cards unless they offer substantial retention bonus. I do believe they will be offering substantial retention bonuses in an effort to keep customers.

I believe it’s .8 Cents-per-Point to redeem thank you points for a mortgage payment now. That seems to be their preferred ratio.

The website should show you the exact cost, e.g., 2500 points for $25 mortgage payment. What do you see there? Or are you saying that the website shows 2500 points but when you called to redeem they said it’s actually 3125 points for $25?

On what card? I still see $25/2,500 typ on my premier.

Had me worried there for a moment, I still have a decent chunk of TYP on my Preferred card (former Forward card). Luckily it’s still 25/2500 there. I should probably cash them out soon anyway.

What card are you seeing this on?

Here’s more info. I called Citi Friday to redeem Thankyou points for a mortgage payment, like I have for years. I have 5,700 TY points. I asked the rep for a $50 check for my mortgage, like I’ve done for years because that’s the best value for me with TY points. He said I need 6,000 and something points and that I don’t have enough points. I did not pay attention to the exact amount. I asked if it is still 1 TY point = 1 cent for mortgage payment. He said it is not. I asked when that change was made. He said “last month.” I haven’t checked Citi’s web site. I generally stay away from Citi technology. It’s the worst in the business. Will check it tomorrow and will call Citi back tomorrow. Maybe I got a rep that didn’t know what he was talking about. It’s certainly possible. I just assumed they Nerfed another benefit. I have Premier and Preferred, for now.

Disregard my comments. Called back today and redeemed TY points for a mortgage payment without issue. Not sure why the issue a few days ago.
