I look forward to regulation which holds companies accountable for the language they do and do not include, though I do not hold my breath. It is not a consumer’s “fault” for taking actions which the company’s systems and/or terms do not block, especially in this day and age when we are constantly tracked, recorded, and analyzed by companies with and without our consent. It is not as though companies lack the ability to prevent that which they disallow (Amex).

I wouldn’t die on that point — the language always says they can change the terms so when they do and then take all your points (which is then allowed under the new terms) they are fully justified under your logic

So it looks like AA set a precedent by completely shutting down loyalty accounts that were costing them money with no explanation or appeal, and Aeroplan has followed. That’s terrific news.

Did AS have explanation or appeal in their shutdowns of a few years ago?

These shutdowns are not really new, but they’re happening at bigger companies now and affecting more people now. When the shutdowns happened at AS, that was long before the merger with Virgin America, and so AS was still a west coast regional only at that point. And reddit/churning didn’t exist yet.
