Funniest line of the WSJ article: “These (new primary checking and savings account) customers are considered the most desirable because they rarely leave and are promising prospects for other product sales.” Sure thing!

Although I think bank bonuses are here to stay, I am a little concerned with the many banks that were nationwide have pulled back to being regional. Santander, BMO Harris, M&T (accidently nationwide?), US Bank, all pulled back. In my area, First Tenn reduced their footprint, as did First National of PA, cutting out my region from getting any bonuses. Don’t get me wrong; these banks still make gobs of money, but I think collectively they are slowly getting more stringent on bonus requirements because they are wanting to target customers by where they live. I expect the time from last account date or last bonus timeline is going to grow across the board, as more banks are implementing that now too. Makes good record keeping for us as customers even more important, as they generally don’t tell you aren’t eligible until months down the road when you ask why the bonus didn’t post.

I know I actively look online, as I have all the local banks and credit unions shortcuts linked, however I am not going to drive around town asking. Now if I happen to be there for other business, then I will.

For those that don’t know, the easiest way to find all the financial institutions in your area, use the FDIC and NCUA website search engines.

My theory is banks like to keep up with the Jones’s. That is why WI and PA tend to have a lot of bonuses – the going rate is higher there to bring in customers, and they have to try to compete with the other banks. Best non-nationwide bank bonuses I have done/found within reasonable driving distance was the Dollar Bank $200, $100 Union B&T, $100 Fulton, $100 City Nat of WV, and Chartway $50-50-50. $100 isn’t exactly turning heads, but that’s the going rate here. Last year I had one offer in the mail from Southern Bank $50 bonus, and it was so bad I couldn’t even bring myself to do it. But I am not above stopping in a bank while on vacation or a trip to take some of their bank bonus money. M&T is about 1.5 hours away, but not sure if I am welcome back? They handed me and SO $2K total last year, and that was without any repeat promo codes. I would love to hear how the dance went at those finance or investor board meetings, but obviously someone swept it under the rug. I am still astonished that didn’t get airtime and/or clawbacks.

Is there another way to see the WSJ article: These Bank Customers Are Making a Bundle on Their Deposits without logging in or being a subscriber?

WSJ allows temporary reading access of one article if you clicked through to that article from Facebook, and used to from Google too but I think they stopped that one.

The easiest way to get to read any WSJ article is to run its link through archive.is:
