[Rumor] American Airlines To Eliminate Close In Booking Fees

American Airlines insider @xJonNYC is reporting that American Airlines plans to remove the close in booking fee, they will be also be changing the rules for changing awards.

Obviously this is just a rumor at this stage and we don’t know what the rule changes for changing awards will be either. Delta & United have already eliminated close in booking fees.

AA is moving to a dynamic pricing model for award redemptions. They have added more partners but the cost of redeeming is increasing too. Expect devaluation thru dynamic pricing. Those MileSaver tickets show up with the frequency of unicorn sightings.

There has always been dynamic pricing on awards.

I will say I had a flight booked for 21+ days out and was charged the $5.60. I had to change it to 10 days out and they did not make me pay the increased fee. This would be awesome if it went away as I was almost always booking last minute!

I guess it makes sense if there is full dynamic pricing for AAdvantage redemptions. Awards cost more miles, but less ‘cash copay’.

For the first time in 23 yrs, I’m not sporting any AA card in my wallet. Although its not entirely their fault, the last 5 or 6 flights were all delayed, a couple overnight. I’ll try some other carriers for a while and see how it works out.

The copay on most AA awards has been some of the lowest in the business. How exactly will the “dynamicness” help ?

The close in fee just changes form, from dollars to miles. DL charges an extra 12.5k miles usually on any close-in ticket, in my experience.

[Rumor]JonNYC is “dating” the VP of strategy. They can’t go public because the VPs wife doesn’t know yet.

This is a FAKE post. AA makes millions in baggage and close in fees, they are NOT STUPID

Forgive me but what does this mean exactly?

wow, this would be great — big if. (Would spare us the hassle of trying to avoid the AA close-in fees by using the currently non-functioning Iberia/avios workaround….. grrrr…. really loathe dealing with Iberia’s worst-in-class web site.) Devil though may be in the details. AA currently is notorious for award seating not being much available, until you get within the 3 week window. (and then le voila, it magically appears — when AA can tack on the close-in fees) Ah, but take away the close-in booking fee revenue stream, and will the availability remain?
