[Rumor] Citi To Stop Accepting Applications For Prestige On 8/18

File this under highly speculative, but Flyertalk user garykung is reporting being told by a Citi rep that Citi will stop accepting Citi Prestige applications on 8/18. If this is the case I’d expect it’s due to Citi refreshing the benefits on the card and it will be relaunched rather than the card being completely discontinued. We will see if we can confirm this happening with any sources at Citi. Apply for the Citi Prestige card doesn’t make a lot of sense currently as there is no sign up bonus and it would prevent you from getting the Preferred/Premier cards (Premier currently has a 60,000 point offer).

That would be a bad news for me then since my af is up after this statement in mid august 🙁

Same thing happened to me.

Interesting. I received a nice retention offer just a week ago. Maybe try and call again? http://lazytravelers.net/ritz-carlton-card-dead

they need to come out with a lot of benefits in order to compete in this market. lots of better product

For those who can use the 4th night free benefit frequently, the Prestige is unbeatable. It’s kept >$1200 after just two trips for me.

yes it might be worthwhile for people who spend a lot at the hotels but as far as new app goes without signup bonus it’s not worth it. maybe if they relaunch the card with signup bonus then ill see.

Yes, my guess is that 4th Night Free is too generous, for those that make heavy use of it, so a refresh of benefits might well put an annual cap on it (hopefully allowing at least a small expansion of some other benefits).

Congrats on spending $3600 on hotels.

probably was work 🙂

What they should do is match the Premier offering of 3x for all travel-related charges. What else could they realistically do to enhance the card? I really can’t think of anything beyond that.

Bring back all the perks they’ve cut, they could increase portal redemption to 1.5 like CSR. Makes no sense that I can redeem higher on premier for hotels than I can on my prestige.

I don’t know, maybe offer AA lounge access, 1.6x redemption on AA flights, three rounds of golf a year, etc.

Haha, exactly what i was thinking 🙂

3rd night free and cover tax

I hope they improve the card! This month my annual fee is due this month and I was planning on downgrading to a no annual fee card knowing it would probably reset my 24 month clock. Come on Citi give me a good reason to keep the prestige ( I have not used the 4th night free and don’t see myself using it in the near future). On another note how long can I wait to downgrade / cancel and still get the annual fee back? 30 days after the fee posts ?

You could do like me if you’ve had the Prestige for over 24 months, I’m currently keeping it but got the Premiere 60k offer, still meeting the min spend and once done and i get the 60k, then i will cancel Prestige to restart the clock. That also means I eat the fee but mine is $350 minus $250 for air travel so I’m out $100

I have only had the card for a year. I decided to get it when they had the offer of 75,000 thank you points last year and I happened to have a major expense pop up so I figured why not. My fee is 450 and I already used all of the points so probably not worth keeping for $200.

I don’t think you need to keep the card any longer, why not cancel now?

Hmm, I was looking to get the Premier in December when I’m eligible for the bonus again, then the prestige shortly after to get a 4th free night in Bora Bora next May. Should I forego the premier bonus and get this card before the 18th to lock in the 4th free night, which would save more than $1k?

This is my favorite card because it gives me about $2,000 in cash every year thanks to the 4th night free. I travel for work and I keep the free night rebate. Use it about 10 times a year and voila.

I see everybody’s points and its true. This card is only benefiting very few people like me a lot, and it is not attractive to anyone else.

I expect more cuts. Citi has said that they’re not interested in competing in the high end market. Expecting richer benefits is just not realistic. Maybe this is the beginning of the end and one of the easiest ways to jumpstart this is to stop accepting more applicants? Kind of like the AT&T card perhaps? If we’re lucky they’ll let just those of us who have the card to continue with the current benefits.

That’s what I’m thinking, too – the relaunch will be inferior overall (though perhaps with a decent initial bonus). Though I’d be happy to be wrong and see it get better, that doesn’t seem to be Citi’s MO these days.

I canceled mine this past spring. I’d thought that I would get good use out of the 4th night free, but just didn’t…either because my travel patterns hadn’t been 4+ nights in one place lately or when I was staying longer, Airbnb options still came out cheaper than area hotels even with 4th night free.

I have PP lounge access with CSP so that wasn’t keeping me with Prestige either.

The new IHG Card was the last nail in the coffin of the Prestige. Now when people want the 4th night free, they can go for it at any IHG property paying with points instead of cash

Unfortunately IHG properties suck unless Intercontinental.

Kimptons and many Indigos are very good properties.

Yes, that will show Citi!!

I just got an email today from Citi Prestige offering $1 donation to fight hunger for every time I spend $5 or more on dining until Dec 31, so that makes me doubt that they are going to kill it off completely.

I got this on my (wemc) double cash, I think it’s unrelated.

That’s not a Prestige-specific promo. I got it for my Premier card, and then once I registered, I asked do you want to register any other Citi cards. I then registered my legacy no-AF AT&T Universal card (on which I got a 5x TYP promo recently which includes restaurants). So it looks it works with all Citi cards

They should match Premier’s 3x categories and gain the ability transferring to AAdvantage.

FlyingNinja

I was thinking of canceling or downgrade after applying for the premier, but I guess I will keep it for now. I used the 4th night credits a couple times last this year and it more than enough to pay for the reduced annual fee of $350.

WR
WR

Yeah I have it at $350 too…basically you use 4th night free and it’s paid for. I’ll never cancel unless for some reason I am unable to travel ever again. I cycle through all the other PP/GE cards, so it’s nice to have one PP login that I know will be valid.

Bring back the AA lounge access, 1.6 pt redemption rate, and 3x travel/dining expenses.

Sorry for being a little of topic.
When downgrading to a no annual fee card, do i need to pay off the balance or the annaul fee that Posts ? Will the balance be rolled over to the no annual fee card ?

Abelian Grape

The balance will be rolled over.

They are probably bleeding because of 4th night free. Anybody who doesn’t use that benefit has probably already cancelled and people using this benefit are causing big losses.

Jl100
Jl100

Yeah amazing that didn’t see that coming. I’m surprised they didn’t put a cap at the beginning – like $1,000 or $1,500 max/year. It would be still probably keep those using it since so much higher than AF, but limit their losses on the people that buy suites every time and stay 4-5 days!

Dev

This is my favorite card for travel.
I use the 4th night benefit, recently did for Punta Cana trip, saved $600

I use it in combo with my AT&T card, where I get almost x3-5 TY points (retention offer every year for 2 yrs) for online spend and with prestige, redeem them for travel (sucks only 1.25 now),for annual fee of $100 (effective, $350 -$200 travel credit), with Priority pass, you can’t beat that !!!

FlyingBoat
FlyingBoat

I think this is the only card that has $500 return protection which is what I have used it for. I plan to get premier this month and then see if I can product change to another prestige later on if I can.
