Our Verdict
Make sure to use a card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases. This works out to be a 12% savings in the form of grocery credit on your next shop, that coupled with the fuel points and the points you earn on your credit card make this a good deal for some people.

As it typical, I found this deal displayed at their sister supermarket, Acme. I’m driving through “Safeway territory” for Xmas, so the gas points would be useful to me. But I’m not in need of any of the gift cards that are part of the promotion. I’ve used Happy cards to buy other gift cards at Home Depot self-checkout, but I’m guessing that wouldn’t work with an actual HD gift card, right?
I received the offer as a cantina coupon and they didn’t really know how to do it, so they just took $15 off my purchase haha
Is the $15 off $15 or there is a minimum like $25 like a similar offer in the past ?

The actual list at the store was quite a big longer then that. I can’t remember everything, but there was also Home Depot, Cheesecake Factory, Red Lobster and more (about 25 different restaurants and stores.) I value Safeway rewards points at about about 2 cents each, so in addition to the $15 off, you’re also getting about $10 in fuel rewards back. Stack your purchase with Amex Gold for an additional 4 MR pts per $ (also worth about $10 @ 2 cents valuation).

No, it is 12%. $125 + $15 = $140 / $125 = 12% discount

You’re getting 112% of what you paid for which isn’t the same as a 12% discount.
125/140 = 89.3% which is a 10.7% discount, assuming you value both the gift card and the shopping credit at face value.
If they simply charged you $110 for the $125 purchase, than it would be a 12% discount. The difference is that you must purchase at least $15 worth of additional goods at Safeway.
I was considering AMC but they’re 20% off on Samsung Pay so I’ll pass.
