Our Verdict
Obviously the fees from having to purchase multiples eat into your profit, but still worth doing if you use a card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases and you have a good way of liquidating low value gift cards. Remember the Chase Freedom & Discover it are both earning 5% back on grocery store purchases this quarter. They offered a similar deal last month but it was for Visa instead of Mastercard. They are also offering an instant discount of $10 off $50+ on select gift cards.

It’s a little frustrating that you can’t register all cards online – I’m getting “We are unable to process this request. Please call the phone number on the back of your card for additional assistance.” when trying to register most cards. I guess I should thank my lucky stars that the phone system finds the cards to actually have value.
Did this get pulled early? Super bummed out, was literally just in my local Albertson’s-brand store with two $100s in hand and when I went to apply the coupon, it wasn’t there! Neither coupon is showing up for me anymore on any of my accounts today when they were there last night. Anyone had success today?
It just worked for me in the last hour.
It’s always fun to watch the expression on the face of a new cashier when they see the total price less than the gift card value.
I didn’t see any $200 fixed ones, I don’t think Randalls ever carried those anytime recently; I think it’s only 25, 50 and 100 for fixed values.
Anyhow, I got the 2×100 from the new 2017 batch of MCGC, the ones with the red plaid packaging, the ones which used to earn points back in 2017-05 during one of these Mother’s Day promotions (whereas the older packaging didn’t), and got no points today. After the 5.95 fees x2, the 15 buck discount ends up being merely 3.10 for 2×100, which is way too much trouble for so much work and little reward.
Plus, they don’t even have contactless working properly at most registers still.
I tried purchasing two $500 variable MCGCs at Vons but it did not triggered the $15 Just4U coupon at the register so I did not purchase them. Seems like it is only working with fixed amount MCGCs. I did not see any $200 fixed MCGCs at my local Vons store, I only saw $100s and below so I’m not sure if any other Safeways might carry the $200 fixed amount MCGCs and also I’m not sure if purchasing two $200 fixed ones triggers the $15 promo upon check out.
I was going to use my Diacover card for this deal but I guess I’ll wait for the Staples Visa GC deal and use my Ink Cash there to meet the minimum spend while making a little extra at the same time.
I had hard $200’s (non variable) at my store in CA they worked fine. But YMMV
2x$200
Two Safeway stores I went to don’t have any fixed $200 MGCs. I ended up buying $500 VGC + 2 x $100 MGC + 2 x $50 MGC and got $25.00 off.
Could not find any fixed value 200s like the ones in OM/OD or Staples. Variable loads didn’t work as stated in the terms. 🙁
It seems that at least two ACMEs in CT are no longer accepting credit cards for VISA/MC gift cards. Must be a pretty recent change as we were able to purchase these with credit cards about a month ago, even though one cashier claimed that the policy has been in place for 6 months. Fraud was cited for the reason. We don’t think that this policy has been coded in the register.
Anybody tried if 1 x $200 works?
its easy to check urself. go to the store and see if there are tons of $200. if so, it doesnt work. otherwise, they would be all gone.
Any datapoint on if it will work on 2×200?
Do these have issues or is it just staples MCGC.
Staples MCGC don’t have any issues. These are exact same ones, usually.
