Our Verdict

Remember to save the offer first to your card before use. Make sure to use a card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases. Keep in mind there is also a deal for $15/$10 off Visa gift cards as well that you could do at the same time.

LOL. Like in November/December? Given the usual slowdown in Q1 be happy there’s anything at all. Safeway hasn’t had ANYTHING in the gift card category of J4U since the start of the year until just recently.

I’m very Happy! 😉

Bought a $207 Happy Giftcard each on 2 accounts yesterday and got the 1656 rewards points on each account.
Already liquidated the GC’s too without a problem.

So basically 16 Rewards (+CC spend) cost me $7, I’ll take that…

I’ve never actually bought these for MS purposes and don’t know much about them. Is there an easy way to liquidate them?

Liquidating the VGC or the Happy cards? I don’t know that there is a way to MS with the Happy cards, but following if anyone has suggestions. If Lowe’s was on the Happy cards I would use for other 3rd party gift cards like gas or something, but I think it is only Home Depot….

The Happy Cards. I see them pop up on these sites from time to time, so I was just curious if there was a way to MS with them.

Jo Katie Hernandez There are two basic MS routes. One is to buy the Happy Guy card, which can be spent at Home Depot. The second is to buy one of the Happy cards (Happy Lady, Happy Student, Happy Kid, Happy Bride) that can be spent at Bed Bath & Beyond or Buy Buy Baby (they are owned by the same company). In either case, you buy the Happy card in the amount needed (for example, $206.95), then use it to buy a $200 VGC or MCGC at Home Depot or Bed Bath. The discount on the Happy card covers the $6.95 VGC or MCGC fee, and leaves you with a profit. You can then liquidate the VGC or MCGC in the usual ways (Walmart money order etc.), or just spend it organically, which is probably easier for $200 cards. For an extra bonus, registering the Happy card on Ebates sometimes works to give you some additional in-store cash back at Bed Bath, which is especially nice when Ebates has 2x or 3x in-store cash promotions. MAJOR CAVEAT: Happy cards should be spent quickly. They have well known security issues because the packaging leaves all of the card information exposed. (Search the web for more information.) Do NOT stockpile them.

Thank you for that information! I thought it would go something like that, but I wasn’t sure if Home Depot or Bed Bath sold VGCs. I have been meaning to check out my local Home Depot to see about this.

RM, this is fantastic; I will need to check and confirm that my Bed Bath sells VGCs…I have never looked. If I purchase the Happy Guy GC for Home Depot, how can I use that one? Can I use to purchase 3rd party gift cards or VGCs there as well?

I believe so, although I have not done it personally because BBB is more convenient for me. There are many DPs on using Happies at Home Depot. Look through the comments on this site for the Happy card sales in November and December at OD/OM and Safeway.

Interesting promo for those of us in Northeast/Mid-Atlantic. Many of us do the Giant/Stop&Shop deals to pay little or nothing for our gas, but we are currently in the seasonal lull for that gift card promotion. The Acme gas program has traditionally capped out at $1/gallon discount, so it’s usually less attractive than the Giant/S&S program, which has higher or no caps. But if you can’t do Giant/S&S this would be an alternative.

I was initially alarmed by this language when I clicked on the Acme site to load my Happy coupon: “MAXIMUM GAS REWARD AT PARTICIPATING SUNOCO STATIONS IS $0.20 PER GALLON OF SUNOCO BRANDED FUEL AND $1 PER GALLON AT ALBERTSONS COMPANIES BANNER GAS STATIONS.”

Obviously, a 20 cent cap is basically worthless (we don’t have Albertsons gas stations), and I have seen that cap in other regions (like Florida). So I wondered if the gas program had recently changed in the East. But when I click through the Acme fuel rewards information on their website, I found this: “MAXIMUM GAS REWARD AT PARTICIPATING SUNOCO STATIONS IS $1 PER GALLON OF SUNOCO BRANDED FUEL AND $1 PER GALLON AT SAFEWAY, CARRS/SAFEWAY, TOM THUMB, RANDALLS, VONS, AND ALBERTSONS (collectively, “Albertsons Companies Banner Stores”) GAS STATIONS.”

So I’m inclined to believe that the language on the coupon is a “typo” from another region, and Acme customers can still get a buck off their gas in the program.

Not a typo.

You can use 2 rewards max at partners (Sunoco, Chevron at my area), max 10 at brand stations (Albertsons, Safeway etc). Each is worth 10 cent per gallon.

I don’t drive a gas guzzler (fuel tank is 11 gal..), so for me gas rewards is worthless, better to find a cheap station instead. The value of the program for me is using it for groceries: free dozen of eggs, $7 off meat dept. etc

If you read my post more carefully, you would see that I noted that OTHER regions have the 20 cent cap. But the Acme region has never had such a cap. You can use up to a dollar a fill-up. My assumption is that the cap is variable based on competition, and perhaps the presence of store-branded gas stations (lots of gas rewards competition in the Mid-Atlantic, and no store branded stations). The Acme website still says the cap is a buck, so I think (but obviously don’t know with 100% certainty) that the language in the online coupon is incorrectly lifted from the rules that apply in other regions.
