[Expired] Safeway: Save $10 When You Spend $100+ On Visa Giftcards Or 8x Rewards [Vons, Randall’s, Albertsons, Tom Thumb, Acme, Jewel, Shaw’s]

Deal has expired, view more Safeway deals by clicking here.

Update 9/15/19: Some markets are offering 8x rewards instead of $10 off.

The Offer

Direct Link to offer (login required)

Check your Safeway Just4U for a digital coupon to get:

  • Save $10 when you purchase $100 or more in Visa gift cards

The Safeway deals are usually at Von’s, Albertson’s, Randall’s, Tom Thumb, Acme, Shaw’s, and Jewel too.

The Fine Print

  • One time use
  • Valid until 09/28/19

Our Verdict

Normally the offer is $15 off when you purchase two $100 cards, or $10 off when you purchase two $100 cards. This only requires purchasing a single card but the discount is lower. I think this specific offer should work on variables as well (update it does). You won’t earn fuel points though. As always make sure to use a card that earns at a high rate on all grocery store purchases.

Seeing 8X Rewards Points on either 2*$50 or 2*$100 instead here in SoCal.

The Safeway stores in the Bay Area are showing the offer displayed above in the post. If you redeem your offers for groceries the 8X value can exceed the cash offer and would far outpace it if redeemed for many gallons of gasoline (meaning two cars or a large truck at the pump). Either way you need to do the math because you’re paying the activation fee.

I did buy 2 $100 vgcs …just got 4 rewards . How to get 16 rewards ??

Card Cash sells discounted Safeway gift cards and if you check out with Discover using Paypal you get 5% back. Wonder if you could then use the Safeway gift card to purchase the Visa gift card?

Against store policy and cashiers won’t let you do it to begin with.

Most, but not all.

Strange. I don’t have this – but have 8X rewards instead of $ off purchase of 2*50 or 2*100 Visa GC

Hmm…I got the same offer too. I just wonder it’s targeted offer this time.

Yeah, I think this is the first. Vons/Albertsons are showing the lame 8x rewards offer. The moneymaker is showing only at Safeway.com and probably will not work at Vons. Oh well.

T
T

Same here. On both self and spouse accounts

Catapult
Catapult

FWIW, 2*100 purchase should give about 1600 points or 16 rewards. 7 rewards = $10 off grocery purchase. So for those who buy groceries here this might be better than $15 instant off

You have a narrow window to use the rewards. I agree with your math but would rather have the cash off. I suspect this is some A/B testing by Safeway

Interestingly I did get the $10 coupon, when I clicked in, even though I was not shown it as organic to my own account.

I’m finding it harder to naturally use these VGC for organic spend since so any merchants are now chip only (typically smaller shops running on square)

Celia
Celia

I have at least a month, if not six weeks to convert my rewards and then another month to use them so not that narrow of a window.

I have the $10 off $100+ which I like better this time so I can use on a $500 card. Easier to use for me this time.

Edward
Edward

I value 10 points like $20, so this one is much better to me

R

why you forget fee ~$12?

Catapult
Catapult

Just comparing the current offer with the usual one which was flat $15 off. The fees on these cards hasn’t changed

FYI – I clipped the 8x points offer (2x better than just $10 off in my opinion) and checked out, but only received 2x (1200) points. A quick call to Safeway customer service (shocked they’re opened on Sundays and how helpful/quick it was) got me the other 400 points.

qmc
qmc

2x = 1200? So you bought $600? At 8x, that’d be 4800 … so where did “other 400 points” come from?

lilurbanachiever
lilurbanachiever

Yeah, had to do the same – seems like they have a bug in the system. At least they answer the phone promptly.

Just moved to a city with randall’s. So how many accounts do y’all have to take advantage of this daily with a different account?

Valerie

Shaws MA – just got $10 off $500. No gas rewards.

Starting Oct 4 redeem rewards at Exxon Mobil.
Gas rewards no longer available at Sunoco after Oct 31, 2019

Chuck

Thanks, posted about that now

DP: Vons worked on 500 variable (to the amazement of the clerk)

Alex
Alex

Which variety of 500?

Superman
Superman

$500 variable VGC for $495.95 and $100 Everywhere VGC for $93.95.

Alex
Alex

I understand this 🙂 I was asking which variety of $500 Visa worked to trigger the $10 credit.

I have 8X rewards offer instead for buying 2 $100 VGC, which should get me 16 rewards (7 rewards can be redeemed for $10 off). Can you stack two 7 reward redemptions (so $20 off instead) and does this discount apply towards regular gift cards and/or VGC?

yanjie
yanjie

Yes, you can by changing the current store to another one in another state, this way you can get $22 out of your 16 rewards, I usually use 7 rewards for $10,
5 rewards for $7 and 4 rewards for $7 meat and get $24 total.

LL
LL

When you change current store to another, you can load another reward redemption? So this way they stack at one store in one purchase?

yanjie
yanjie

yes! it’ll trigger both if you shop at one store.

Avi
Avi

Amazing! I’ve been playing the Safeway points game for awhile and never knew that. Thanks yankjie!

Yanjie
Yanjie

No problem! You can also use 7 rewards for $10, 5 rewards for $7, 4 rewards for $5, and the total is $22 too. As long as you’re buying stuff of $10 or more, all 3 coupons should get triggered.

Avi
Avi

Can you load more than one $10 reward at a time, or the switching stores trick just so you can pull up another $10 reward in the same month?

Avi
Avi

Ah, never mind, I see that switching to a different store temporarily hides the rewards already loaded from a previous store. Essentially this lets you redeem rewards as as many different users as you want while pulling from the same rewards balance. Very cool stuff.

Avi
Avi

I redeemed 2 rewards for a $3 produce discount at an out-of-state Safeway and it didn’t actually take the $3 off when shopping at my normal Safeway, so this is YMMV. Definitely test it on a small reward first.

Bert
Bert

I did this but all the rewards don’t apply at time of purchase to my home store… only the random out of state ones I choose to load them to. Do you know how to circumvent this? Call customer service or something?

yanjie
yanjie

This offer applies to both regular and variable Visa Gift cards. The dining every where has a fee of $4.95. If you signed up the $24 way as I did and buy $10 or more in meat products and use self check out and if you are lucky, all 3 coupons will get triggered and the machine will spit out $14 cash for you!

Anthony

The language for the 8x offer required 2 $100 vgc. Did the variableswork for this offer? Did you buy 1 or 2 $200 vgc? Thanks

LL
LL

I bought 2 $100 VGC, not sure if one variable would trigger it since the terms say 2 $100 VGC

A bit disappointed. I was looking for the $10 discount. 8x gas sucks.
Should have bought the MC last week.

A bit off topic but sorta on, I have the BCP that I was just charged the annual fee for. I take advantage of these coupons but wonder in the long run if it’s worth it to keep the preferred versus for 6% over the downgraded 3%. Do not spend a lot on groceries but do use 2-3 accounts to take advantage of Meijer and Just4U discounts on Visa/MC cards. Amex doesn’t post L3 data on either store though I don’t know if they collect it. Does everyone here keep the 6% card? TIA

qmc
qmc

Do the math for your own situation. Compare

$X @3%

with

$X @ 6% – $95

keeping in mind X has an annual cap.

Celia
Celia

Thanks. Have done the math. Have made 230 this year in that category so 115 more than if I had the 3%. It’s more profitable to have the 6% but I have no way of liquidating other than organically. I guess my question was more wondering if buying mostly (85%) gift cards at grocery stores could bite me in the a** with Amex. It’s the end of my first year having this card after getting an upgrade fee free.

Superman
Superman

Since BCP AF posted, I upped MS to $500/mo. at gas station and supermarket. That’s $540CB -$95AF =$445 vs. $300 BCE. I told myself I would not renew (exhausted from liquidating*) but this offer adds $48.60, (12X $4.05MM) to both sides of the equation.
*I recently attempted liquidating 2 $500 Safeways and 2 $1K Simons via $3K MO @ gebit-friendly WM. Asked $500 for 3rd & 4th swipe. “You know we don’t allow over 3 swipes.” Fortunately, I had 3rd Simon in hand.

Celia
Celia

I initially was going to downgrade but then this deal showed up and I have 3 accounts with the $10 off (and another if I use my mom’s account). I blame Safeway. 🙂 Thank you, that helps. I think I’ll keep it for now and if Discover/Chase come up with groceries next year, I’ll downgrade. Thanks again.

No luck in SoCal. I switched the store to a Bay Area address so I could generate the $10 offer, and added that to my card. No discount applied at checkout in store unfortunately

qmc
qmc

it sounds like socal should have the 8x rewards points, which is arguably better.

Peter Wirth
Peter Wirth

True, though the $200 purchase limit hurts the points earning potential, making it more of just a cashback offer. Still a good offer if cash back is the goal though
