[Expired] Safeway: Save on $10 on $100 Visa GC [Vons, Randall’s, Albertsons, Tom Thumb, Acme, Jewel, Shaw’s]

Deal has expired, view more Safeway deals by clicking here.

[Update: Multiple readers report that this one does work on variable-load cards.]

The Offer

Check your Safeway app for the following offer (possibly available on the website as well):

  • Clip the coupon for $10 instant discount when you purchase $100 or more in Visa Gift Cards.

The Safeway deals are usually at Von’s, Albertson’s, Randall’s, Tom Thumb, Acme, Shaw’s, and Jewel too.

The Fine Print

  • Limit 1 per household
  • Expires 6/8/19
  • Visa gift card is issued by MetaBank

Our Verdict

Fairly regular deal, and a nice way to rack up some grocery store spend. Remember to save the coupon first; also, use a card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases (including the Chase Freedom this quarter). In the past, you typically did not get fuel points on Visa/MC gift cards or might not. In the past, the coupon has not worked on variable load cards.

Would variable load Visas work?

Wyle
Wyle

Sounds like it might this time. No specific mention of $25/50/100 denominations like there has been in the past year.

Would love us some confirmation 🙂

Are you saying this because you actually observed this to be true?

Raymond

Yes! It works on variable. I’d suggest getting it done earlier than later as I can see this getting abused

I can confirm that a $500 variable VGC got the deal

Curious what’s the benefit? You still saved only $10, right?

Indeed, especially with 5% on the Freedom card this quarter for those who don’t have a 6% AMEX BCP.

I’m new to the gift card game, recently upgraded my Amex Blue to Preferred for 6% on groceries. What is the advantage of a variable VGC? Thanks

Ben W
Ben W

It’s the one that goes up to $500, which minimizes the percentage of the fee.

Nope, just bought a $500 variable visa (4:05pm) VGC at a Jewel-Osco and the $10 credit didn’t post. Will go back and buy a the highest denomination VGC I can find.

I bought $100 Visa Everywhere for $93.95 instead of $500 VGC for $495.95 and saved 6.1% vs. 0.8%, as I already met MSR and no J4U rewards on either.

As I stated when I forwarded the offer to DoC this morning there is currently an issue with fake barcodes being sneakily inserted into the packaging. The result is that you as you purchase you are actually funding a card in a remote location that is quickly drained. You then have a gift card in your possession with a zero balance. The store won’t help and the bank has been surprisingly uncooperative. Examine all packaging carefully and pull the tab (checking carefully underneath) at the register.

Thank you for remind.

Friendly reminder don’t forget to add the offer by 6/1. It always disappears a week before the deal actually ends.

I was at an Acme a few months ago, and they told me that they didn’t have a program similar to ShopRite’s PricePlus card which now appears to be false information.

I went to their website and signed up for Just For U and the offer was there.

Apparently, I can use a telephone number at checkout so that is pretty convenient. Don’t plan on installing their app.

$10 here I come! LOL

A bunch of new grocery stores added Just4U in the past month or so, so the info may not have been false at the time.

Ben W

Based off of historical information, is the 1x actually enforced?

Edit: I see the coupon has been removed now that I have used it, so I guess that’s a yes

Nothing but the limits of your own imagination stopping you from creating as many accounts as you want 😉

As setting up multiple accounts to avoid limits is now against their rules, if the rules are broken and they notice, they’ll probably make changes that are more strictly enforced (e.g., fewer offers, lower discounts, etc., just use your imagination). Having said that, it’s also in their terms that you can have more than one account per household (unlinked, or linked together), probably just not more than one per person to avoid limits.

So after seeing this thread, I stopped by my local Acme store. Getting $10 off a $500 Visa is nice (and it worked!), but what I was particularly interested in was my store’s circular which states “4x Rewards on All Purchases” through tomorrow in the Just for U program. This would net considerable free gas — or, as the rules now allow, significant free food in lieu of gas.

But despite what the circular says, Acme didn’t give me any gas rewards for my purchase. It said it awarded me zero. At the same time, though, it did say I had one reward in my account (which is good for 10 cents off of gas or something like a free bag of chips) which I otherwise shouldn’t have.

Does anyone know what’s going on? Do I have a legitimate complaint to make to the Acme folks for more gas rewards? The ad doesn’t exclude gift card purchases — and I have earned gas rewards on some previous gift card purchases at Acme — but it has these weasel words that say “other exclusions and restrictions apply.”

Celia
Celia

Per the terms of Just4U, Visa, MC, Amex, etc. gift cards do not earn rewards so that sadly falls under the other exclusions and restrictions apply. Regular purchases earn 1x and 3rd party gift cards earn 2x.

you should have:

It’s easy to earn Points just by shopping at participating Albertsons Companies grocery banner store locations or mobile apps and using your registered phone or Loyalty Program card number at checkout:

Every $1 spent on eligible grocery purchases* = 1 Point

Every $1 spent on qualifying gift cards* = 2 Points

Every $1 spent on qualifying pharmacy purchases* = 1 Point

* ELIGIBLE PURCHASES exclude: (1) alcoholic beverages and tobacco products; (2) fuel and automotive services; (3) bus/commuter passes, fishing/hunting licenses and tags, ski/amusement park passes, stamps, money orders/transfers, lottery/event tickets, ; (4) any financial instrument that can be redeemed for goods or services at participating Albertsons Companies grocery banner stores – including (but not limited to) gift certificates, money orders/transfers, and gift or debit cards issued by American Express®, MasterCard®, Visa®, NetSpend®, PayPower™, Green Dot®, Univision Mastercard®, or any Albertsons Companies grocery banner store; (5) phone cards; (6) all fuel gift cards, including but not limited to Chevron and/or Texaco; and (7) all fluid dairy items in the refrigerated dairy section—including fluid dairy substitutes, depending on state and local laws. Bottle/container deposits, sales and other tax payments and bag fees, if applicable, are not purchases and are not eligible to earn points. Only out-of-pocket pharmacy costs (e.g., prescription co-pays) are eligible to earn points.

So it’s just a mistake when they get awarded? I bought Visa gift cards at Acme two months ago and got fuel rewards.

There was a glitch it March that got fixed that gave us rewards on Visa cards. It has since been fixed.

Anyone know if I add this to a Safeway J4U account, can it be used at Albertsons (or another store that’s eligible, but not Safeway)?

You should assume no store takes back gift cards, even for fraud.

I miss the old website. The new website sucks when you trying to log into dozens of accounts.

Do I have to add grocery or something to make it 110$ and get 10$ off? Or do I just get the $100 plus 6 fee totaling 106 and it’ll be 96$?

Santosh Purohit
Santosh Purohit

I added the coupon to just4u and it did not deduct 10 on Fixed value card , I have done so many times in past these deals and this is for first time I am seeing a problem in aCMe in PA… anyone has same issue….

86
86

I had that happen once or twice or year or two ago, I think it had something to do with the account being relatively new, even after using it successfully for the same kind of VGC discounts before that. It’s also why I now try not to insert my CC until after I’ve input my phone number and the cashier shows the total with the Just For U deductions. Doing that’s helped me avoid buying something without the discount a couple of times, but doesn’t seem to work for the rewards. For redeeming rewards, I’m not able to see the total until my card is inserted/approved.

Celia
Celia

This deal is on 100+ so the fixed cards aren’t automatically coming off. Had the same issue so the manager had to manually deduct $10.

Donat forget to clip today, most likely wil disappear tomorrow if history serves (a week before expiration). Once clipped though, it’ll stay in your account until expiration of 6/8.

Variable definitely works, just bought a $500 at Safeway

Mikey

Debated and finally put $500 on a variable load today, 5/29. After the cashier pulled the tab I advised her to scratch the barcode. It was solid and nothing peeled off. Paid $495.95. Immediately before leaving the store I registered the card and changed PIN at giftcardmall.com/mygift which showed $500 as available. No reward points this time.

Mike Saint

I can confirm that the $10 off worked for a $500 VGC at Von’s in San Diego today. No points as usual for Gift cards but nice if you have a 5% cash back on various cards.

I just went to acme and tried to buy the variable load vgc for 500 and the discount wouldn’t apply. Can anyone else confirm if the variable load cards no longer get the discount?
