Our Verdict
Fairly regular deal, and a nice way to rack up some grocery store spend. Remember to save the coupon first; also, use a card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases (including the Chase Freedom this quarter). In the past, you typically did not get fuel points on Visa/MC gift cards. The last deal on Visa cards did work on variable load cards, but I believe this one Mastercard one will not. Hopefully someone more knowledgable will comment on this below.

Incidentally the ones sold at my local Albertsons post as 1% on Plastiq. Worth paying the $1 Plastiq fee to avoid unloading hassles.
Soooo…. check my math. At my local Shaws, the $50 cards carry a $4.95 per card activation fee, and the $100s have a $5.95 fee. For ~$197 and 5x points at supermarkets on my basic no-fee Hilton Honors Amex, that means I’m basically buying 1060 points? or $100 for about 500 points?
The math sounds right, $196.80 for both offers. How many points/dollars you get depends on your credit card. I used Amex Blue Preferred so I take off another $11.80 on one JFU account and my Chase Freedom (980 points) on another.
My Safeway insisted that they now only accept cash to buy these. They even had a sign up saying so. Said it was a brand new policy, just started a couple days ago. Gonna try a different store today.
This happened at a Safeway store near me last year. When I asked why, I was told ‘fraud’. Mostly on the variables for $500.
The other stores in my area still allow CC. I hope the criminal element doesn’t ruin it.
I still have a $10 off $100 of Visa card purchase on my MyMixx account (expires 6/8). Anyone else have this and try seeing if it stacked with the new offers?
Mymixx store coupons have been known to stack on the same item.
I also have “$2 off Everyday Select Rewards Visa Prepaid Cards when you activate an Everyday Select Rewards Visa Prepaid card”. Not sure what those are or whether they have a fee.
It wouldn’t stack because this offer is Mastercard while the other offer was Visa.
The Everday Select Reward cards are like Greendot. There is a post about that offer on this site.
Is there a trick to using these online? Despite registering a card a week ago it still fails address verification…
call the phone # on the back of card to see why a registered card failed
I always have problems using them with Verizon. Worked fine with Geico.

Silly….cashier called manager (for approval) while trying to buy two$100 MCs….he asked how much, so he obviously thought they were variable ones, but c’mon, manager approval? ….
Safeway cashiers are very silly. Once I encountered a cashier who didn’t sell me VGC unless paid by cash. He even claimed that he had been working there for 10 years. I turned around and the other cashier sold it in front of his face. What a joke!
I’ve needed manager approval every time for VGC at 3 different Jewels. Just expect it frankly. They’re also cash only for MOs. They’re clearly pretty risk averse when it comes to potential fraud.
I never need it at tom thumb, but at Albertsons they go nuts. I only stopped there today because they had grapes on sale 🙂
Sometimes these purchases earn reward points as well. It is hit or miss. I’ll report my result after shopping and hope others do as well

I like to input pin. An old lady walmart cashier accused me for using credit card to load after i swipe metabank master card. The receipt does not says “debit tend” but something “payment service E”.
