[Extended] American Express Personal Platinum Cards Will Get $200 AmexTravel Credit

Update 11/16/21: Those who have not yet used this credit are getting an email noting that they’ve extended the expiration of the credit through June 30, 2022. Hat tip to reader Donerly

Update 8/5/20: This $200 AmexTravel credit offer has now been extended for those who renew through March 2021.

Update 5/5/20: This has now been confirmed:

Beginning in August 2020 through December 31, 2021, select  Consumer Platinum Card can earn a travel statement credit after they make eligible travel purchases through American Express Travel. The travel credit amount will be for $200.00. Platinum Card Members who renew their Card between April 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020 are eligible for this credit.

Original post:

A reader called into Amex asking for a retention offer on their personal Platinum card. The representative told him that it will be announced tomorrow – but he thought it okay to let it be known – that personal Platinum cards will get a $200 credit to be used on Amextravel. The credit will be valid from August 1 and will be good for 18 months.

Given that we’ve seen most Amex business cards with fees, outside the Business Platinum, get an ‘appreciation credit’, I’d hazard a guess that other personal Amex cards will also get smaller AmexTravel credits or perhaps credits of another form.

From the way this was presented it sounds pretty believable to me. We’ll find out tomorrow.

And it also would point in the direction of my hunch that these ‘appreciation’ credits are valid for all users whose annual fees post during 2020. This isn’t confirmed, but it’s my guess that they just haven’t sent out all the email or that they’ll send out email to some people when it gets closer to their annual fee. We’ll see.

FYI – My annual airline credit is for UA and today they told me that my charge for $100 a few days ago (for UA Travel Bank) is coded as a “Special Service Ticket ” and will NOT be covered by this card benefit. We pretty much only fly DL, AA, and UA. Any ideas??

I don’t have any travel plans before June 30. Do you think I can just buy $200 Delta flight and then cancel it and get a $200 Delta flight voucher?

I can’t find any reference to this credit anymore, on Amex or any blog. There isn’t even a link to the post confirming the credit was extended to 6/30/22.

yup and expires that 6/30/22 date. Chat with the rep and have to clarify this is different than the regular $200 offered to all amex plat members.

Is this different from new $200 hotel credit you get annually?

I never got it in the first place so an extension is moot.

DP: I booked a hotel over summer, got the $200 credit, then had to cancel my hotel reservation (due to delta), and the credit was never clawed back.

I just used mine at a Grand Hyatt in Bkk. Rate was so low didn’t want to use points. After booking thru Amex I asked my Hyatt concierge to add my Globalist #. Then I asked her to apply a suite upgrade which I didn’t think possible. She did. When I arrived at hotel they upgraded me again per the Amex terms so I got an executive suite plus all Globalist benefits (free breakfast and lounge) plus the $100 free spend. Suite deal!
So, although status benefits are not suppose to apply, they can if you ask. Be sure to get your membership number attached to the reservation.

FHR bookings are qualifying rates, eligible for points and status benefits. It’s the Hotel Collection bookings that usually aren’t, but never hurts to ask.

Yes. This was of course through the Hotels Collection. But from what I read, they usually do give you the benefits at Hyatt. But you have to get your loyalist number on the reservation.

Did you get credit for your nights?

I have not got the nights credit for it yet, but I just checked out yesterday. I doubt I will get the night credits from what I have read,
But I already have 60+ nights in this year do no big deal for me. Can only get 10,000 point tier bonuses from here.

Wow! My nights posted today. I did get the nights credit for tier bonus. Also the rate qualified for Hyatt points even though Amex paid. The deal just kept getting “suiter”.

If your consumer platinum card renewal was due between April 2020 and March 2021, and you renewed, you should have received the travel credit. If not, call amex. It was meant to encourage people not to cancel their cards because of the pandemic. It was a one-time credit for all flavors of the platinum card and was not targeted.

If you read posts below from last year, this is clearly targeted. My renewal was due during that time and I didn’t receive the extra credit. Yes, I did reach out to Amex and they said the marketing team decided whom to target.

Amex Business Platinum gets the stick as always, cancelling.
