American Express Business Platinum Refunding $200 From Annual Fee After Card Renewal

American Express will refund $200 from your Business Platinum annual fee ($595) upon card renewal.

Direct Link to offer

This is being sent out via email to some and it shows at the link above. Some are also seeing it as a banner ad in their online account.

It hasn’t yet gone out to everyone via email, but some with annual fees due much later in the year are already getting it, so I’d guess that it’s just being sent out in batches and ultimately everyone will get it (at least if your fee is due anytime in 2020). That’s my guess.

(Updateone reader was told this specifically by a rep that the appreciation bonus is for those whose annual fees renew between May 1 and December 31.)

Offer terms:

  • Eligible Business Platinum Card Members as determined by American Express in its sole discretion, will be eligible to receive a one-time $200 statement credit after Card renewal.
  • The statement credit will be applied to the eligible card account within 8-12 weeks of the account renewal month.
  • This statement credit is limited to Basic (not Additional) Card Members only.
  • Offer is non-transferable.
  • If the eligible Business Platinum Card is cancelled, or you have downgraded or upgraded your Card up to 45 days after the first day of your renewal month, you will not receive the one-time $200 statement credit.
  • American Express reserves the right to modify or revoke offer at any time.

It seems that only the Business Platinum card is getting this. We haven’t heard anything about the personal Platinum or any other card yet.

The Platinum business card and many other Amex cards got other enhancements as well.

My annual fee posted on Dec 5 and I got the 200 credit on Dec 31. I was planning to cancel. Should I wait till after 45 days to keep the 200 and get the prorated refund?

Upgraded my Biz Green to Biz Plat this month. $595 fee hits some time in July. I should be eligible for this, correct?

Thanks, a few more questions if you don’t mind looking for DP -deciding if worth downgrading back to Green biz.

When did it post? Did you have to call or chat? Did you put much spend on the Green biz or Biz Plat?

Just asking its P2 card – but shes been in Pop-up purgatory since last year.

No problem!
Not much spend. I checked via chat but even the terms say you should be eligible. Credit posted about 8 weeks after my AF posted.

POSTING as DP

Upgraded P2 from Biz Green in May – AF posted 10.1.2020

Chatted quoting fine print and page link – said was’nt eligible –

Will likely pay it as P2 has been getting pop-up last year then downgrade back to bizgreen in Jan.- P2 has 4 AMEX CC – and would like to add another Aspire – but will mean closing Hilton biz after 12 months – and P2 has been in pop-up purgatory for about 12 months.

DP update
Soooo despite chat saying that P2 wasn’t eligible, $200 appreciation credit posted after paying AF and after the statement cut.

That basically wiped out the upgrade AF differential also got TC, dell credit, as well as S&H and Cell credits –

DP – I paid my AF during Feb. Never really asked for any credit or retention points when I renewed. Spoke to a rep just now, claims that my account is not eligible for it and AMEX is still reviewing other accounts for this appreciation credit, as they are slowly rolling out the benefit to other members. Told me to stay tuned, but essentially it’s a NO in the face.

I went from feeling delighted with the changes Amex was making to feeling pretty irritated that anyone with renewal between Jan and Apr is being excluded from the $200 renewal credit. Has anyone with a Jan-Apr renewal tried calling in to get the credit retroactively?

It’s probably enough to make keeping the card open depending on your renewal date. The $200 travel credit + $200 in Dell credits alone would wipe out the fee (although I don’t love the Dell portion). But are you getting any real extra value out of it? Since my renewal date is in October, I would get November and December’s shipping/wireless charges, so that’s an extra $80. Solid, but not life changing. If I could trade the Dell credits for Uber ones this would be an easy decision. If somehow they can convince WeWork to extend the partnership this is a no brainer. A retention offer would definitely do the trick too.

I did get the offer for $200 credit (Annual fee coming up June) but I don’t think I’ll renew. Dell credit is just not worth much to me and travel credits are just too much of PITA now. Without any travel, I really don’t see a compelling reason to fork over $395 after the refund.

You might be able to use the $300 in Dell credits at least, depending on your renewal date. You have 30 days to pay it, so hopefully you can use the other $200. The Dell credits are annoying, but they do price match all of the big competitors if you call in so there can be some value there.

I got it this morning. My af hits in June. Will try for a retention offer then too. Definitely makes me pause before canceling, but it is still a $395 fee, for one additional (b/s) airline credit and 1-2 additional Dell credits.

I have also received an email mentioning all the additional benefits, without the one-time $200 statement credit. My AF was due in Feb and I have already called retention. The offer was a one-time $350 credit.
