Southwest Rapid Rewards Can Not Be Redeemed For Gift Cards Due To Covid-19

Southwest has temporarily paused their More Rewards feature which allowed redeeming Rapid Rewards points for gift cards and other merchandise. I assume they just don’t have the money to lay out to pay for these rewards so they are pausing the feature. Or else, they are seeing a mass exit from the points currency which they are trying to discourage by forcing people to wait until more normal times.

Due to circumstances resulting from COVID-19, we have temporarily paused the ability to redeem points in More Rewards. We are sorry for the inconvenience and hope to resume normal operations soon. Thank you for your patience and grace during this time.

It’s disheartening to see this move as Southwest points always had a floor of about $.01 value since they could be redeemed for gift cards to places like Amazon or Walmart. Hopefully they’ll bring this option back soon, though I wouldn’t be surprised if nothing changes for a good few months.

How about the Amx Schwab Plat?

I don’t have this card yet because once you get it, you have 1 year to cash out if needed.

damn, hope out, i was getting ready to cash out

Mind posting a link to this 1-year cash out policy? I’ve had the card for almost 2 years now and have had no problems. That said, I do frequent cash outs anyway rather than amass for 1+ years at a time.

I Didn’t mean to mislead. For the 1 year to cash out, I meant that you have 1 year before the AF kicks in again. These cards are extremely expensive beyond your first year.

I prefer MRs for airlines and you can’t beat it, but Schwab provides that back door, if needed.

Yes, please provide link to 1-year cash out policy. Unaware of such a policy and not in benefit terms..

Did a cashout yesterday and funds deposited instantly in Schwab account

Of all the major carriers, usually Southwest is the in the best shape financially. If anyone weathers this, I imagine it’d be Southwest.

though AAL always has the best lobbyists it seems…I mean, southwest can tell you all about it

Yeah, they must have taken it down on March 15 or 16. For various reasons (unrelated to pandemic) I don’t expect to use my Delta miles for several years at the earliest. So I was looking at the SkyMiles Marketplace to redeem for retail gift cards. Then I hesitated for a day or two but went back on the 17th to buy. At that point, the gift cards had been removed from the site navigation. I was still able to buy the gift cards because they appeared in my “recently viewed” list (I just couldn’t get to the actual product page—but I didn’t need to at that point). The eGift cards did come 7 days later, as promised.

Didn’t best western do the same thing today? Could be that they all use the same company to fulfill these orders and that company is having problems.

Isn’t the stimulus expected to be approved with $50 Billion going to major US airlines, Southwest being one? I’m sure they’re getting like $5-$10Billion which should bounce them back.

As long as things pick up around June then July-August Travel should help significantly. Definitely not by Easter though as some say.

I was able to redeem for a gift card today that wasn’t Amazon, Walmart or target. May not be totally dead.

At what cpp value?

1cpp like usual when having a Southwest card.

Do you recommend we cash out all of our UR points, TY points, etc. in case this spreads to other companies?

This is likely due to many Companies using a distributor in a state under mandatory shelter in place… Apparently Gift Card Distribution is not an “Essential” Employer…. Even if they do a good amount of their distribution digitally, it may be more difficult to limit to just one channel then to shut down digital and physical.

Well crap I just signed up for another one recently. I have never flown southwest and simply redeemed for gift cards

Bummer. Was contemplating redeeming my 99k points before my annual fee was due again in July.

Was supposed to be getting married in June and originally planned on using my points for the honeymoon to Jamaica (Hyatt Zilara) and Arizona (Miraval). Wedding is most likely going to be postponed so I’m not sure about the trip now.

Oh well. Guess I’ll probably keep the card for another year.

William Charles

The points are in your SW account, no need to keep the card.

Chris
Chris

Correct, but if I remember right, the option to redeem those points for Amazon gift cards is for cardholders only. Maybe I’m mistaken. William Charles

Brad

I haven’t had a SW card for a couple years and could still do GC redemptions.

This is what was always touted to use the rr’s for gift cards.
