Our Verdict

Great deal for INK users, though it’ll only work for a single card per transactions. Update: Readers confirm this is working with multiple cards in a single transaction, as in prior such deals, no need to split up the transactions.

Reader Kelly notes this can stack with a $5 Retailmenot deal. There’s also a Wells Fargo Go Far deal at Staples stores.

$5 off $25 Amex offer expires tomorrow which doesn’t overlap with this promotion.

MoreSun

But don’t stack with the 10% off on amex deal if you have it on more than one card!

Leapfrogger
Leapfrogger

Amex 10% offer is limited to $5 cash back.

JAMES
JAMES

I think the Amex 10% offer is good for a max. of $ 100 back. There is a different Amex offer that is $ 5 back from $ 25.

I have uses thus offer already except for one card. If amex were serious they should have removed the offer from the remaining cards.

MoreSun
MoreSun

Where’s the benefit to amex? They’d miss out on the swipe fees.

But you could use this in your defense of they clawed back later.

what about the retailmenot deal for $5 cash back for in-store purchases of $30+
deal expires on 9/4/18. this deal worked for me on a previous purchase but oddly it was from an online purchase.

Justin
Justin

Is this a targeted offer? Don’t see it on retailmenot. Thanks.

Kelly

I don’t think so. I saw it in the app for in-store cashback offers.

Thanks found it

Do these work for paying Citi?

dont think so

I’ve done it in the past and it should work

dk

Are you guys talking about paying off a Citi credit card bill or for paying like a Citi mortgage?

Vee1
Vee1

you can pay off citi credit card bills via debit cards (and certain prepaid gift cards) but you have to call citi via phone.

Vee1
Vee1

doesn’t work, because Staples only sells visa gift cards issued by metabank. just tried, and Citibank rep got an error.

Any ideas on how to liquidate all the MasterCard and Visa gift card we have accumulated from Staples promotion ?

Chris
Chris

I’m no expert but people have been using Plastiq MasterPass promotion for Mastercard gift cards at least.

Elmer
Elmer

Some sage advice: don’t purchase a lot of gift cards without a couple of different exit options.
Most people will have those exit aisle paths well scoped out before take-off.

elegua

Prepay your bills, i have 6 months paid in advance for cable, water, gas and house/car insurance, every time i get one $200 GC it goes to one of those bills, Safeway $200 with $15 off and SAM’s $200 with $20 back was perfect for that, also have 3 months spend in food with the SAM’s deal.

A.J
A.J

I would just use US Bank Cash Plus to pay my Utility for 5% Cash back.
I would say use your gift card on those places where doesn’t allow you using credit card

Jason Smith
Jason Smith

Why would you use it for cable, the ink card itself gets 5% back for cable?

A.J
A.J

Sorry, I only meant electricity and water bill. I will use ink cash on cable/phone bill

Krista
Krista

You’re robbing Peter to pay Paul.

You could have just used your credit card to pay those pills directly and not bothered with the gift cards.

Celia
Celia

But if you get 5% back (or 10%) for a no-fee card at Staples and then pay a bill that you wouldn’t get 5% back on, you’re paying Paul less than you robbed from Peter.

USPS? Or did that shutdown a while ago?

dk

USPS got tight. Grocery is getting tight to. Girl told me the other day that the cops had come in and told them they cant sell MO for GC anymore. I told her “cops can’t tell a store not to accept legal tender” I just got a blank stare.

qmc
qmc

I would have given you a blank stare too — a VGC isn’t legal tender.

Ron

Does Walmart, Kmart allow purchasing money orders with these GCs? What other grocery stores are there? Sorry I am totally new to this process

Lantean

Is the limit 1 per transaction enforced by the register?
I remember last time I did it I bought 5 cards without a problem.
Thanks.

Jonathan
Jonathan

I’m wondering this too. Last time they ran this no-free promo, I was able to buy right up to the Staples limit of $2k in one transaction–i.e., 10 $200 VGCs. It was so easy.

projectx
projectx

How about just try it instead of posting it on an open forum for all to see.

Jonathan
Jonathan

Um, yeah. I tried it last time, and will do so again. Whatever your problem is, it has nothing to do with me.

projectx

Sorry that response was intended for Lantean. Or anyone else that posts a lucrative system glitch on an open forum.

Jonathan
Jonathan

Well, to be fair, I’m guilty of whatever Lantean is guilty of…but trying to silence this kind of discussion about loopholes and glitches sure does seem like a losing battle!

Lantean

This has been posted million times over on SD and DoC as well.

One could even argue that such discussions are a feature of these sites, not a bug.

Nothing wrong with asking questions. If you don’t want to participate on an open forum then don’t but I’m getting a bit sick of how often you try to shut down any sort of public discussion on any deals you deem yours.

Same as last time. I purchased 8 at one time, $1,600 and no fee…

AMEX Simply Cash 5% Cashback isn’t so bad either….

CM

Word of warning — I made a few 2k transactions on my SCP last time this no fee ran, and although I did get 5%, it didn’t count towards the minimum spend. I’m not sure if it’s the L3 or the 2k that got it disqualified, but it 100% didn’t count towards MSR.

Jason Smith
Jason Smith

The terms of Amex SimplyCash say the 5% excludes gift cards and Amex gets level 3 data from Staples. And as we see, even if you initially get the 5%, they can claw it back afterwards.

CM

Thankfully, we haven’t reached that point yet — AmEx offers are 10% on top of whatever normal rewards you earn (although how much you’d scale that is also more limited by the number of cards, so, yeah), whereas here it’s a flat 5%. But I agree with your sentiment — you can never be too sure with AmEx.

Credit
Credit

5% cashback is paid two months after earning it. Does anyone know what happens if you close the card after earning the cashback and before is paid out. Is the cashback lost?

Credit
Credit

Does staples give rain check on these. In my local area if you don’t go on the first day it’s a hit or miss for the rest of these time.

CM

Every time I went to Staples for these deals all the stock was like ridiculously old, like, years behind! At OD/OM, there’s always fresh stock, and certainly fresher than Staples.

If you’re not getting any at your Staples except for the first day, the managers are probably hiding it or something.

Davy

Why not ask at your store?

Yes. But I can argue forcefully if i know what’s being done elsewhere or what the corporate policy is about this.

Never a good idea to ask forcefully.

Or 7.5% in travel using Ink and moving the points to Chase Saph Reserve. that is $15 per card!

Nice combo for those who got the Wells Fargo 30-50% cashback offer @ Staples too.

This is much better than the MasterCard deals, there are very few reports of Visa cards getting hacked.

Chaser123

I have had zero issue with mastercards from staples. I have bough lots. Their are just a pain in the ass to liquidate through the masterpass promo, but worth it snce its free. I am a little less excted about visas becasue its not free to liquidate for me but It is still worth it with a liquidation fee. I actually really love these deals so much more than the rebate. Makes it much cheaper to max out the 50k per ink card.

Stryker
Stryker

How do you liquidate using Plastiq’s MC promo? Every time, I use MasterPass checkout, it’s either Citibank or CapitalOne login page?

Krish
Krish

Use cognito to login to plastiq

Jason Smith
Jason Smith

I’m not sure what your point is. I have never been on airplane that crashed, so does that prove that airplanes never crash? There are numerous reports from people that their Mastercards got hacked, which says that they are more prone to be hacked. That does not mean that every person who buys one will get hacked.

If your philosophy is I’m going to keep on jumping on the beehive because I’ve done it 100 times and never got stung, go ahead and keep on doing it.

Thanks. Was waiting to use my second (different SSN) Amex card for the 10% off. Hope they let me get more than one but if not, I’ll hit it on the way home each day.

If you have the Wells Fargo Cash Rewards card, you may have a nice cashback rate at Staples to activate in your offers. Mine is 25%.

gus g

jess,
in my case I do have the WF cash back rewards card so if I buy a $200 Visa gift card I will get $50 is this correct

Jess
Jess

That’s the idea. You may have a different cash back rate, however, and you need to check the Locations listed on the deal to make sure your Staples is included.

jess,
In my cash I do have the WF cash back rewards card does this mean if I buy a $200 visa gift card I get $50 cash back on my WF card.
new to this thanks.

FYI – that its limited to 7K bonus points. So ~280 in spend. Still good.

Will this count for the Minimum spend on an american express business card?

Jack
Jack

No. Amex precludes gift cards as part of minimum spend and they get L3 data from staples.

Calvin
Calvin

Is this for cards issued by AMEX or all cards running on the AMEX network?

William Charles

Just amex issued cards for now, not those running on the network

WM MO still works right?

L T

DP: I did some staples GC’s in store and online last month w/ AMEX SimplyCash biz. From the statement, it would seem like the online $100 card counted for the 5% (minus the 10% AMEX offer), but the in-store $200 purchases did not seem to qualify for the 5% off.

However, all the in-store and online purchases qualified for the 10% Amex offer capped at $100. Given this I might just stick with Ink and not bother with AMEX for this staples promo…

Is cash back for AMEX SimplyCash delayed by a month? I went back and it didn’t seem like it is… just seems like they didn’t count it for the 5% if it is a GC via L3 details… just FYI to all

Celia
Celia

On Simply Cash, it’s two months before you see the cash back. At least that’s how my statements have been working. I am waiting for my next statement to close to verify that they don’t count gift cards in the 5% category. I assume so but I don’t know for sure yet.

L T
L T

Edit: Yes, you are right, it is 2 months behind, didn’t look too clearly earlier. I don’t have GC’s going 2 months back this year, so will have to wait a while to see if the ones last month indeed count towards the 5%.

Chris
Chris

So it is still YMMV. I’ve been fine most times but have got the “we need a name on the card”

Also wondering this. ^
