[Expired] Staples: No Purchase Fee On $200 Visa Gift Cards (12/15-12/21)

Deal has expired view more Staples by clicking here.

The Offer

Direct link to offer  (“see upcoming ad” page  11)

  • Staples is offering no purchase fees on $200 Visa gift cards at Staples stores.

The Fine Print

  • Valid 12/15-12/21
  • Limit one per customer

Our Verdict

Been a lot of good office supply store gift card promotions lately, but it’s always like this in the busy shopping season.  Use a card that earns at a high rate on office supply stores. There is also an amex offer for 35% back at office supply stores.

Anyone ever increased their $25k yearly bonus cap on Ink Cash?

msb1xr
msb1xr

Yes by getting a second one.

EIN + SSN, or different EIN?

yup
yup

Is that 25K calendar year or card member year?

Steve
Steve

The $25K resets on your card’s anniversary date.

Ink cash is useless. All these vgc deals have a one card limit and they are $200.

So hard to buy and hard to liquidate. What good is ink cash then?

Steve
Steve

Useless?? I earned 66,000 miles on my Ink Cash last month.

ChurnMagic
ChurnMagic

Exactly. I pulled in 55k miles to max out my $25k bonus in Nov. Just reset in Dec.

ELI
ELI

@ Steve; How r u able to liquidate? My local Walmart doesn’t allow MO purchases using giftcards.

Steve
Steve

Eli, I use grocery stores.

ELI
ELI

@ steve – u mean that your local grocery store sells money orders? lucky you.

Celia
Celia

It’s funny, I don’t have an easy avenue to liquidate quickly, organic spend only, and yet I am not restricted to one at my locations.

Steve

The first part is probably the reason for the second part. (If it was easier to liquidate in your area, then many more people would be be buying gift cards at the stores near you, causing the stores to enforce limits.)

Celia
Celia

Possible. I only tried at Walmart, I see people loading at Family Dollar, they hold up the line 🙂 At one of the Staples in my area I’ve watched people buy 1K at a time.

debit
debit

But at walmart you can only use at most two cards. So it’s more hassle to drive to the walmart. I probably just break even or make really little. Not worth it.

Kyle
Kyle

Hmm, I rarely hit up Wallly World. Instead I hit up the multiple Krogers much closer to me and liquidate a couple at a time (at each Kroger that is). Probably nowhere near what others pull in but I am approaching 100K UR points just over the last 3 months or so.

Celia
Celia

I’m jealous you have a Kroger, for more than just the MOs 🙂

Kyle
Kyle

I actually hate Kroger for grocery shopping. Always crowded and overpriced. I prefer Aldi

Jj
Jj

No they don’t. I buy $800 worth everytime. It varies

Brian

Get 80K SUB, then downgrade your Ink Preferred. Repeat.

Roderick
Roderick

Brian do you wait until the 1yr mark to downgrade, or downgrade a few months after opening the CIP?

kokoro791
kokoro791

Product change from CIC to CIP/CIU then product change back to CIC will reset the cap

Any limitations as to how often that could be done?

happyrock

While it’s 1 per customer, it really depends on the store. A few months ago they had this promotion and I bought $2400 worth of VGCs at a staples. They didn’t really care.

Josho

May want to add “in store only” somewhere. Had my hopes up until I clicked on the image

Tread lightly if purchasing with an AMEX card. These show up on your statement clearly labeled as a $200 VISA GC purchase.

Celia
Celia

This has been the case for years. And i will continue to use Simply Cash until they stop giving me the 5%, which they have always.

captainsave
captainsave

Just wait till they clawback.

Kristina S
Kristina S

Celia has huge balls.

Celia
Celia

Why? I have had the card for 20 years. I never noticed if or when they added a gift card exclusion to earn 5%. I don’t use it much, I am not like a lot of people who put 20k on the card. If they want to claw back the maybe $150 they’ve given me this year, fine.

Now, if I were trying to pull that off when trying to meet minimum spend…

Monica
Monica

How do I liquidate these gift cards? I am just keep buying them but dont have much use as I am always busy fulfilling my spending requirements with other credit cards.

Andrew D
Andrew D

You probably shouldn’t buy gift cards that you don’t know how to liquidate.

And I was suggesting figuring that out BEFORE buying.

Monica

Just seeing if there are better ways to spend these. There always seem to be tricks and tips I am not aware of.

Celia
Celia

Personally, I can’t liquidate the ways most here do. I use mine for organic spend on items or services I would normally use my 2% card on: doctors, insurance, gas, electric. I run into the same issue you have, using most of my spending on cards geared toward their categories. I can usually go through a lot of these prepaid cards the first couple months of the year to pay medical until my deducible hits.

aubergine
aubergine

one issue with using gc for paying medical bills – i have never experienced an industry with more issues around billing problems and lost payments that doctors/medicine etc. there is some value in having a single decent cash back card where you keep all your medical bills so that if you ever have an issue with a billing agent / collections co. you can easily pull up a record of payment and ask the vendor to please revisit their records as you have record of payment on xx date for xx dollars to xx vendor.

gift cards just aren’t going to give you that ability, unless you keep super awesome paper records.

smaller firms have more issues with this.

Novacat05
Novacat05

Make a one time payment for your insurance, cable, cell phone, utility(check if there is a surcharge), streaming service subscription, etc. My auto policy is set up for automatic monthly payments so a one time payment just reduces the monthly payments for the remaining term. You can have a negative balance for companies like Comcast and AT&T, and have a couple of months where you don’t owe anything.

These are all great because for the vast majority of cards these are 1% categories already so you aren’t losing any extra cash/points back.

Lantean
Lantean

Cable, cell phone, etc already get 5x with Ink… no need to buy these cards for that.

Eric C
Eric C

I use my VGCs for normal spend on everyday items. I just consider it as getting 5% off since I bought the VGC with my Ink Cash card. You are not going to find an everyday card to use everywhere for 5%.

Electroman

Unless you pay no activation fee, you aren’t getting 5%.

This is a post about fee-free gift cards…

dave

Doesnt always work but try getting money orders with them at walmart then depositing those in your bank.

Rowan
Rowan

But please read up about structuring. I’ve never heard of anyone in the miles & points game being charged with it but it’s theoretically possible we could sometimes approach that line with money orders since some of the things we do to use our prepaid cards can be seen as a little “shifty”.

I also highly recommend not depositing m/o at your everyday bank as some of them might shut down your account.

Sarah D
Sarah D

Structuring is all about intent. If you aren’t *trying* to hide your banking activities, you aren’t structuring.

aubergine
aubergine

If you have stacks of gift cards unused you better have good records/receipts in cash there is a problem. Its not the base case, but sometimes these get corrupted and fixing it if you are confused as to which card bought which vgc along with which activation code is just going to make things harder if you end up fighting with the vgc issuer…..

also if you aren’t using them right away, considering registering them online to yourself.

Jan W
Jan W

How does registering them online protect from fraud? Thanks.

GMoney
GMoney

how often are these available online? I live in middle of nowhere and no staples/OM/OD – just getting ready to convert CIP to CIC for 5x since I don’t need CIP because P2 has and just got referral bonus

Eric C

These VGC/MCGC deals are never online. They are always only in-store offers. Sorry to tell you the bad news.

Tommy
Tommy

I can meet me sign up bonus with these for a chase ink preferred right?

nick
nick

possible, but they have been cracking down recently. my suggestion is to use organic spend until you get the bonus. that is what i normally do. i am sure it is ok to buy a card or two, but don’t just buy 25 cards.

barrytuneup
barrytuneup

by now most vets here have maxed out the fee free Ink cards up to 25k. Mine reset in March. So I switched to my BOA biz adv cash rewards with 3% back at office stores. Easy to get and 3% w/o a fee is still fantastic. Liquidate to Gobank for free.

Ro
Ro

How do you liquidate to Gobank?

raekwon

Via app/barcode @ walmart

Rowan
Rowan

Interesting, I didn’t realize GoBank had a scan to load option… Are you finding that’s easier to deal with at the register than the usual ‘load my prepaid card’ procedure that sends some clerks into a tailspin?

Raol
Raol

I tried to look for GoBank and greendot card at WM but both have fees. How do i get free one?

Rowan
Rowan

“Direct deposit” (aka push a $500+ ACH deposit each month and then pull it back out a few days later.)

Samosa
Samosa

Rowan I cannot find GoBank card in my local WM. All I see is WM MoneyCard, is it the same thing? (it requires $1K DD instead of $500, so I guess these are different products).

Rowan
Rowan

Hmm, that’s strange. No I believe the WM prepaid has a $4/load fee so I don’t think it’s a viable option. You can sign up for the GoBank card directly on their website http://www.gobank.com, which you’d have to do when you register it anyway so it actually saves you a step.

barrytuneup
barrytuneup

main problem for me is finding a Staples that still allow 10 cards per trip. Had 3 that did that..down to 1 now, but did make multiple trips during the week. So far..so good.

Rowan
Rowan

Ugh, I feel your pain… During the previous promo my favorite location suddenly flipped from allowing 10 cards every time with every clerk to being very strict on just allowing one per trip. It’s a significant loss for our area. =(

What do you all consider a decent risk/reward level on number of MO’s deposited monthly into a single bank account?

If anyone is willing to share their personal DP’s, I would greatly appreciate it… 🙂

My Background:
as I’m getting better at MS, and having a Staples which allows 2k limits as well as easy access to 1k Simon cards obv helps, I accumulate more and more MO’s (after maxing out monthly BB/Serve/Gobank limits).
So far I have not opened any bank accounts just to deposit these MO’s, so rely on my accounts I have from bank bonusses.
Since most of those are being churnable (and connected to my CC’s), I’d hate to get shut down on any of them.
So, what’s my play here…?

Whiskey Foxtrot
Whiskey Foxtrot

Your play is to open a bank account for a bonus at a bank you aren’t particularly tied to and through which you do not wish to have a CC relationship. Deposit there, pay your CCs with other banks from that account. In that case, perhaps the bank shuts you down, but very little is lost. I selected a bank at which I can deposit MOs through the ATM as checks – even the awkward WMMO. I find it very easy.

Electroman

Burner accounts at banks or credit unions that don’t have CC rewards you’re interested in and you have no other accounts with. IME credit unions have let me do this much more than banks, but YMMV.

Bob
Bob

Very interesting and helpful thread. What’s an IME credit union? Is there a per deposit limit or a monthly limit on your m.o. deposits to avoid any reports being issued by your bank?

I think IME means “in my experience”

DoC just posted a warning with an update from a user who used these deals to MS with Chase cards. Maybe the WM bill pay was the issue, but still seems worth mentioning.

If i pay medical bills with these GCs, can i then ask for reimbursement from my HSA acct?

jb
jb

yes

Rowan
Rowan

I don’t see why not – my HSA administrator usually just needs to see the bill along with the payment receipt and doesn’t seem to care how I paid it.

Rowan
Rowan

Oops, Celia’s comment below reminded me that I was talking about a Flexible Spending Account, not an HSA so please disregard.

Celia
Celia

Yes, that is different and with that, since you have to use it every year, it’s a good way to utilize these cards. I do use them for my co pays and such. Or even use them for medical expenses, I just don’t reimburse myself.

Celia
Celia

Sure you can. Personally though I do that. HSAs can grow tax free year over year. If you can afford to not take it out, best to leave it in place. It’s a triple tax advantage. Tip: You can keep the receipts and a spreadsheet of all medical expenses and take it out of the HSA tax free if you ever need it, even years later. You just need to make sure to keep the documentation. Do some research if you choose that route, not a tax advisor, only pointing out personal situation.

Heads up – Payce is offering 5% in-store cashback at Staples again through 12/31. Office Depot too. Don’t forget to re-activate each time you use it. Gift cards are excluded according to the T&C; I can’t remember if that’s always been there but I’ve had multiple purchase track & pay out.

aubergine

can Payce be stacked with Dosh, eBates etc.?
