[Expired] Staples: No Purchase Fees On $200 Mastercard Gift Card [4/22/18–4/28/18]

This deal has expired, click here for more Staples deals.

The Offer

Weekly ad page 2

  • Staples is offering a $200 Mastercard with no purchase fee (normally $6.95)

The Fine Print

  • Valid 4/22/18–4/28/18.
  • The Mastercard® Gift Card is issued by U.S. Bank National Association, pursuant to a license from Mastercard International.
  • Mastercard and the Mastercard Brand Mark are registered trademarks of Mastercard International.
  • No cash access. For use in the U.S. only. See Gift Card for terms and applicable fees.
  • Limit 1 per customer.

Our Verdict

Previously they would offer a $15/$20 rebate for purchasing $300 in Visa/Mastercard gift cards. With this offer it might be easier to do multiples (although it does list the limit of one per customer. Update: multiples in the same order are working fine) but the deal itself isn’t as good as previously you’d purchase $400 in gift cards and get a rebate of $10/$7.5 per card (and this deal just saves $6.95). Plus side is you’re not dealing with a rebate I guess. Use a credit card that earns at a high rate on office supply store purchases. Keep in mind the American Express SimplyCash might no longer be earning 5% on Staples.

If only it were a Visa…

Jason
Jason

Hello, can you advise why it would be better for VISA rather than MC?

Klemhuzzah
Klemhuzzah

There’s been a rash of fraud with US Bank MC. A lot of people seem to think it’s an inside job. US Bank Visa doesn’t seem to be having the same problem. Also quite a few people have a lot more trouble liquidating MC that they don’t have with Visa.

so much venting and wild misinformation below….. which perhaps explains why there is still the “proverbial ton” of these cards at both the staples I checked this morning. Wife and I bought 4 so far today, four separate transactions. (two separate ink’s) No problems. Balances all check out. Will “use” at my fav. supermarket store for mos.

For the mc haters out there, suit yourselves. Vent away. But don’t presume that your experience is necessarily worth bashing everyone else who is quite happy with this deal.

oh, about about locations, “ymmv”. In my area of Virginia, we have several staples, but have to drive 80 miles to nearest OD’s. Yet from quick “googling,” I gather there’s still 1575 Staples locations across the US; whereas Office Depot web site says they still have “approximately” 1400 stores in US — not sure if that includes international outlets. (and yes, more closures underway)

you are either brand new or willfully ignorant. Mastercards are a dangerous hold for more than a few hours. There are 1000s of cases of fraud and hacking of the loaded cards

MickeyMouse

I’ve held some for months without any issues…

Me too Mickey, many months. Smaller denominations, though.

In my family alone, we bought 16 of these last week. No issues with any of them. By “1000’s of cases,” one would think that would rise to the level of some serious reporting on it somewhere. Got any links? Or is this “stuff” manufactured on some foreign “bott” somewhere?

(and no, smarty-pants, I am neither new at this nor “willfully ignorant.” How’s your Ph.D.?)

Downside is it’s a MCGC

Albert H
Albert H

Ever had an Amex GC? those are the worst. lol

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

Amex GC wasn’t bad for me lol and it was when they allowed it for SUB’s if you got it directly from them, plus an Amex Bonus “Offer” in your login.

I got one for 2k then used it to pay my mortgage through Plastiq went perfectly. Definitely well worth it prior to the RAT squad.

From the picture it looks like they have a new MC issuing bank perhaps?
Maybe these do not get hacked… who knows, there are no reports on SD about this sadly.

That’s the fixed value US Bank card.

Any word on if this works for SPG Biz MSR?

Blue

I’d be careful doing min spend on an Amex with Gebits, particularly at stores that send Level 3 data.

Sean
Sean

How can you tell which stores send Level 3 data?

Rod
Rod

Staples does send level 3 data. I’m working on some min spend for an Amex card now and I will steer clear of these.

Sean
Sean

Sure. But how can you check which stores send level 3? Does Safeway? Also, does it depend if the purchasing card is an Amex or a Visa?

Wyle
Wyle

1) Do some google, DoC, reddit, flyertalk research or make a purchase and check your statement and online account.
2) No L3 data on any of my statements for Safeway.
3) Yes.

@Sean It shows up on ur transaction info.

I assume these will work at Dollar General for loading serve?

Gerald

They work at Family Dollar, so I assume they work at DG.

Loaded at DG this morning, no issues

I purchased a couple of these MCGC last time this deal was at OD/OM. I went to my local WM yesterday to purchase MO and 2 of them kept error-ing out while the other 2 loaded with no problem. I believe they may have been compromised? What is my course of action? Thanks

don
don

You’re not sure if they were compromised? Did you check the balance?

Lantean
Lantean

You have to contact the issuing bank.
This is super common with US Bank issued MC gift cards… honestly, it’s so rampant that these are not worth the hassle.

D-Train

Key is to spend them within hours of purchase. Buy and then drive or navigate on web right to liquidation route

Klemhuzzah
Klemhuzzah

I would go to the website on the back of the card and check the balance.

In-store only?

Do these still get hacked regularly? Does the quick cancel still work at WM?

Raj
Raj

These get hacked basically every time. I don’t buy them anymore as I’m still fighting to get my $400 back from buying 2 last year.

Jason
Jason

Hello, what’s your story about the $400? Mind sharing with me?

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

+1 for the story

CM

I was kinda excited, but Limit 1 kills the deal for me. There are only so many Staples, plus they’ve been limiting total purchase to 1k per day — I saw one cashier use a calculator when I was getting 3x 2x 200 order. It was hilarious to see him scan the first card of the final order, and then state that I’m over 1 grand! Duh!

Jason
Jason

One $200 card per customer, does that mean the same customer say me, can buy multiple $200 cards at multiple stores but just check out 1 card each time? and/or does that mean I can check out multiple times at one store as long as the cashier allows?

CM

Obviously. Staples doesn’t have as many stores as OD/OM, at least in my area and in my experience. Also, they seem to have a policy of selling at most 1k worth of GC per day/visit/store/etc.

LNK
LNK

Not sure what you are smoking here,,I live in the north of NYC within 20 miles there are 50 Staples and there are only “2” Office max/Office Depot.
Not sure where you live but this more OD/OM than Staples is certainly not the norm in any major cites in USA

Celia
Celia

Same is true for my area outside of Chicago. I have 4 OD/OM within 10 miles of me and only 1 Staples. There used to be 3 Staples but they closed two of them.

EDIT: I stand corrected, there are 2 Staples within 10 miles and 9 OD/OM

NinjaX
NinjaX

fuck mastercard. other MSers can have it. no thanks from me. hackers LOVE these deals. they know n00bs would be out in FULL force and trying to clean stores out for points. its payday for the mofos. almost every card during the promo period is a payday for them vs waiting forever for activation.

Since there are no more Easy Rebates I believe this might be as good as it gets with Staples. I assume their gift card sales have massively dropped since running their last rebate in January and they’re testing the water with this deal. Maybe we will eventually see a 15 off 400, similar to OD last week but the good old Easy Rebates times are gone.

I did two in one transaction and was not charged purchase fee for either, no issues whatsoever.

VK

When did you do the transactions? I was happy to see the racks stacked full; but I tried both the new and the old versions of the card and it wasn’t shaving off the the $6.95.

This morning around 10 AM and then at another store around 11 AM. At the second store I bought 5 cards in one transaction and no purchase fee was charged.

Why?
Good luck anyway. You are gonna need it.

It went well at another Staples; great thing is there seems to be no limitation on the # of cards. Bad thing is that I don’t think they have enough cards 🙂

Gerry

I did two in one visit but as separate transactions. Very smooth. Prob will do more this week.

Does registering an address and changing the pin help with these cards against fraudsters?

Rye
Rye

no.

Psjc1eamawcjwfbdf
Psjc1eamawcjwfbdf

No, but it may make it easier to recover the funds. You should definitely verify that the cards be “logged into” online as any pre-activiation activity disables the login and you know for sure someone has attempted the card info.

MickeyMouse

If anyone can confirm it works on multiple in one transaction I’m in.

Deb

confirmed Worked on the old style mastercard for me this afternoon for 2 transactions at one time – black and gold They could not get the new ones to even ring up.
came home – registered on line and liquidated

how did you liquidate them?

I can confirm it worked for me like a charm. CSR rang up a full pack of 10 old style $200 black and golds and it went well.
Not that it did take a while for the system to activate all 10 at once, but eventually got there.
I love the fact I don’t have to fill in rebate forms any more. This is real progress for Staples!
