This deal has expired, click here for more Staples deals.

The Offer

Weekly ad page 2

  • Staples is offering a $200 Mastercard with no purchase fee (normally $6.95)

The Fine Print

  • Valid 4/22/18–4/28/18.
  • The Mastercard® Gift Card is issued by U.S. Bank National Association, pursuant to a license from Mastercard International.
  • Mastercard and the Mastercard Brand Mark are registered trademarks of Mastercard International.
  • No cash access. For use in the U.S. only. See Gift Card for terms and applicable fees.
  • Limit 1 per customer.

Our Verdict

Previously they would offer a $15/$20 rebate for purchasing $300 in Visa/Mastercard gift cards. With this offer it might be easier to do multiples (although it does list the limit of one per customer. Update: multiples in the same order are working fine) but the deal itself isn’t as good as previously you’d purchase $400 in gift cards and get a rebate of $10/$7.5 per card (and this deal just saves $6.95). Plus side is you’re not dealing with a rebate I guess. Use a credit card that earns at a high rate on office supply store purchases. Keep in mind the American Express SimplyCash might no longer be earning 5% on Staples.

These cards seem to fail to validate on Plastiq as well for those who are trying to pay mortgages with MCs.

Liquidating these is too easy. More for me!

Just need to register the card on mygiftcardsite.com to use it with plastiq. Prepaying my mortgage since Walmart is a little inconvenient for me to visit.

Adding the DP: based in SoCal. Bought at staples with Marriott biz card no problem (2x at office stores), no fees. But can’t find where to liquidate. First walmart their money center machine was down and couldn’t make MO’s. Second one simply rang out “tender not allowed.”

I’m nervous as I read here that they get hacked and I don’t want to have issues. I’m not super happy about floating $200 without an obvious liquidation site. Open to suggestions.

Amazon gift card reload I guess, if you use Amazon. Otherwise, grocery store money orders… Kroger brands are usually cool with it; in SoCal I guess it’d be Ralph’s?

Just found out at two different Staples that there’s a system-wide problem ringing up (activating?) MCGC/VGC at their POS registrars. “Corporate” is aware of it, but nobody knows how long the problem would last. Is anyone else getting the same story?

Yeah. New cards wouldn’t activate at my local Staples this morning. Old black and gold ones would, however. They allowed me to purchase 4 at once with no activation fee.

They mentioned about it this morning but they said it just took a bit long to activate. I waited a bit and then they said it went through.
However, I’m not able to make payment using Plastiq. They said the card was not activated properly. Do anyone have the same problem?
I tried to use it for Amazon and phone service and have no problem.
Any other option to spend it by using online payment service? Fee payment is acceptable.

i was able to buy 2 in one transaction this afternoon fee free. As stated above black and gold only. They opened up 10 of the new ones and none would scan and work.

I tried to use them to load my bluebird card but would not work for some reason. Visa gift cards work fine. I used both for money orders within 1 hour and everything worked fine.

The cashier said this happened yesterday and Sunday but all is good now. Duarte CA has a rack full of them although the cashier wouldn’t let me buy more than two (period). Making up rules as they go along, but whatever.

I’ve encountered the following this week alone:
1. Having problem ringing cash cards up on and off, so “executive decision” by the store manager to not sell any cash cards, “period”, with no ETA to lifting the injuction.
2. Why are you buying so many (that number being 4)?! That’s max we would sell you, even after checking ID.
3. OMG, you want to buy 5?! Max of 1 allowed per customer.
4. $500 in GC per customer [per day].
I just go back at a different time, with an entirely different crew working.

Would be so nice to come here with confidence that aside from a few vents, one could harvest good info, as in data points. But, instead, profanity makes an entrance.

These failed for me at four different Wal-Mart’s. Two of the four seemed hard coded against taking any gift cards because I tried Visas too. The other two had machines that processed the transaction so fast the button to cancel didn’t even come up.

As I understand it, WM card readers don’t like these as much as Visa, you have to hit some buttons before the cashier does something? Since I don’t have FD or DG around me, any advice for other liquidation options?

Just for anyone who had trouble finding the PIN like I did, that PIN is hidden on an inside panel! I opened 3 cards before I found it and then didn’t know which PIN matched which card. I had to just try one of the PINs at DG and then, when it failed, I did another. It worked.

I can confirm it worked for me like a charm. CSR rang up a full pack of 10 old style $200 black and golds and it went well.
Not that it did take a while for the system to activate all 10 at once, but eventually got there.
I love the fact I don’t have to fill in rebate forms any more. This is real progress for Staples!
