[Expired] Staples: No Purchase Fees On $200 Visa Gift Cards [5/6-5/12]

This deal has expired, click here to view more deals from Staples.

The Offer

Direct Link to offer

  • Staples is offering a $200 Visa with no purchase fee (normally $6.95)

The Fine Print

  • Valid 5/6/18–5/12/18 (starts Sunday).
  • In store only.
  • Limit 1 per customer.
  • Product may not be available in all states.
  • The Visa Gift Card is issued by MetaBank, pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc. Card can be used everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted in the U.S. No cash access.
  • Item: 374177

Our Verdict

They used to offer a $15/$20 rebate for purchasing $300 in Visa/Mastercard gift cards. With this offer it might be easier to do multiples – although it does list a limit of one per customer, last time around multiples in the same order were working fine. Either way, IMO it’s much better not to have to deal with the rebate.

Use a credit card that earns at a high rate on office supply store purchases.

Nice, I hope we cay buy multiples with no fee like the MCGC promo

projectx
projectx

Doc,
Maybe we shouldn’t openly advertise no fee on multiples on an open blog. I suggest removing that part… then removing my comment. 🙂

William Charles

Don’t think it really matters, Staples would be able to easily see it based on sales data anyway.

CM

That assumes they actually check their data correctly, or look more into the actual numbers.

William Charles

Yeah I don’t think anybody at Staples HQ is gonna be surprised by people buying multiples, if they are checking blogs for information they are checking sales data numbers.

bax
bax

Well, that d**kw*d Staples store manager I encounterd last week, who on multiple occasions refused to sell any of the MCGC on promo, and threatened to “tell them [corporate] what [I am] doing [buying multiples]” would beg to differ. That d*ps**t had the nerve to mouth off to the other “associates”, well within earshot, before I was heading out of the door, “I expect another complaint.” That prompted me to charge to that loser’s face and told him that even though I wasn’t planning to file a complaint, I would make his wish come true. The “excuse” that loser came up with? That he already had three complaints earlier that week (obviously due to his refusal to sell even a single one). Hah, my complaint won’t be about his refusal to sell MCGCs on promo, but rather his awful customer service skills, how terrible an example he was setting for the other store employees and how ill-fit he is to remain employed in that position. I’m sure Staples’ new ownership would love to hear that one of their own store managers was advising customers to go “buy cash cards across the street, at CVS.”

Staples wants sales if their POS’s are set up so that it gives the discount on multiples then that’s on them. I’m assuming either way they make a profit just like OD/OM.

If I’m not mistaken these are the same EXACT VGC’s that we’re just given the $15 Off $300 Promo at OD last month.

did you know you can sharpen one of those giftcards to a razors edge and slit the throat of a manager with too much authority and not enough brains?…to use a Trumpism “I mean I wouldn’t encourage that sort of thing, but just sayin’….” lol
Just find another store, policy depends on the people, corporate is clueless to what happens at the retail level.

If you don’t have anything useful to contribute, just don’t leave a comment at all. I get that readers find these questions annoying sometimes, but just ignore them if you’re unwilling to help.

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

I think it’s that longtime readers of DOC feel that people new to it should put in the leg work and at least check out the aforementioned threads on flyer talk rather then mention that info here.

Just my two cents…but no one needs to be rude about it.

William Charles

Everybody was new once, reading flyertalk threads is a mind numbingly boring task and one of the reasons this site become popular in the first place was making that sort of information easier to access. I definitely get where people are coming from in terms of doing research and I think the original comment was just being lazy but there’s a better way to reply than with just a backhanded google.com comment IMO.

I use them to pay my electric bill on line. They take payment ahead, so a little overpayment is just fine.

Amber, +1.

I have an out of state home that rents out and I cover utils in the rent. Getting the GC early to meet a bonus minimum spend is a great way to pay the extra month(s) for free or just $2.35 fee PLUS it’s easier to find the payment in the following year at tax time.

To clarify: the $200 can be paid toward internet bill at no fee and the $500 toward the electricity bill with $2.35 fee.

Check Flyertalk forum for MO @ Walmart, Bill Pay @ Walmart or grocery stores.

If you’re an Amazon Prime member you can add all kinds of gift cards to your account, then use the specific card to purchase Amazon gift cards as a gift to yourself. You then add the Amazon gift card to your balance and its like having cash in your Prime account. A Youtube video- ‘How To Turn a Visa Gift Card Into Amazon Gold’ is the resource.

Steve

Or just buy Amazon GCs at an office supply store with an Ink card.

Where did you liquidate the MC cards? I’ve heard they are hard at WM and the like.

Katie
Katie

I have done ONE set of MCGC liquidations. You can do a quick cancel at Walmart, and it works fine, but a couple I wasn’t fast enough and had to do it a second time. Much more hassle IMO. If you don’t need the spend, I would hold off for the VGC deals.

Maria
Maria

@Katie
What do you mean “hold off for the VGC deals”? This posting is a VGC deal.

Katie Hernandez
Katie Hernandez

sorry; I meant don’t do the MC deals…hold off for VGC deals like these 🙂

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

Yeah I tried MCGC’s once at WM and it was super awkward I tried 4 times and it never gave me a chance. Ended up walking out sad. Also sad that a few of my local WM’s “don’t allow those (GC’s) as payment”. I didn’t even mention anything the cashier peered over staring at which card I pulled out of my wallet. I said you don’t accept debit cards? She replied, not those ones. I left it at that said okay, have a Good Day. I could’ve got rude and pointed out that most other WM’s do it and so on, but no point in it plus no point in possibly burning other WM’s.

me
me

to which you reply, yes you do…and ask for a manager….the manager should know the correct answer or be able to look it up in the book (corporate policy) where it plainly says that it is acceptable method of payment…but any snags or rejections, expecially multiple ones tend to throw up flags to paranoid cashiers

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

Do you have a copy of the corporate policy? They can make up anything they want if it’s not publicly available.

I’ve gone to two WM’s who claim this is their individual store’s policy, not a corporate policy. Both times a supervisor (yellow jacket) stood right next to them when they advised me of this.

Also, flyertalk advises not to cause a scene just pick up and go to a different WM which is what I did.

But if there a publicly available copy of their corporate policy showing they have to accept them I’ll press the issue.

Alli

I wouldn’t on AmEx. Pretty sure they get level 3 data from Staples.

L T

AMEX definitely gets level 3 data on what you purchase at Staples… so definitely do not recommend.

MarcoPolo
MarcoPolo

Don’t even think about it. Amex RATs are all over this !

William Charles

Who knows these days with amex, I personally wouldn’t risk it.

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

My personal opinion is that if you were only buying one $200 VGC along with another item(s) (laptop or others) that add up to over $200 (49%/51%) then it’ll be fine for Amex as it looks like a casual add on item rather than intentionally going out of your way to just get that.

Unless you’re okay with that I probably wouldn’t do it since I know Staples does give L3 Data. YMMV

Great to see this — and not having to mess with rebates. Had no problems last week buying (or using) the m/c’s — though I restrained myself to one per transaction. (multiple times during the week) Tempted to try two at a time come Sunday — but will be pleasantly surprised if that works. (In my experience, buying more than two in a single transaction triggers manager review of the transaction…. not going there.)

ps, Remembering last week other prominent bloggers were repeating an un-sourced rumor that Staples was merely clearing out its stock, that the deal would run out day one, that they weren’t going to carry them in the future (yada, yada, yada….) Seemingly much to the contrary, in my area, (Hoo’ville) they had hundreds in stock — and still had scores on the racks at week’s end at every store I checked.

Alli
Alli

Can you buy more than one is a single transaction and the fee be removed for all the cards?

escot
escot

Alli, that indeed is the question. On DoC’s thread from last week, several posters further down appeared to indicate that was the case. (as per last week’s promotion, for them, fees removed on more than one m.c card, within a single transaction) I didn’t try it. (I was happy last week to go one at a time….. But may hazard a modest change-up this week. Worried though this “goose” could get abused & “killed”)

CM

As per usual, I only tried buying one pack at a time. (Go big or go home!) I was also told that was actually the limit per day, must be a single transaction. No fees. Love it, especially MCGC, which are sequential (easier to keep track of on receipts), and also have the sticky thing on the bottom of the cards, so, they all stick together nicely without a need to remove the sticky thing, as it doesn’t cover the top half of the mag-stripe half of the card. Plus, they did have lots of stock, although some of it was quite old.

The only annoyance is you have to write down the PIN numbers from the packaging, but I think that not having to remove the sticky things from the cards compensates for this slowdown.

Santiago
Santiago

I had a quite different experience, I went to the register and asked to put them all on different cards and no questions were asked. I did it on 4 different credit cards but staples system is so slow it took like 10-15 mins to do just 4 transactions. Will probably be different if your trying to do all one one card, I would hit multiple staples locations for best results

TomJ
TomJ

I groaned but only because I have TOO many deals going right now and can’t liquidate fast enough. I never liquidate more than one card at a time for various reasons and I still have a stack of cards with more on the way from another deal.

Nate
Nate

Get a green serve, find multiple family dollars or Wal-Mart’s near you then do 500 per store, 1500 per day, runs till you max the 5k, close the serve. If those options are open to you it helps liquidate these small denomination cards

George
George

why green serve?? VIP is better no?

VIP no longer available. Fortunately, I do have one that I got in December thanks to Doc.

MarcoPolo

Isn’t FD limit $500 per day/per store ?

It is but you can go to 3 different stores in one day for a 1500/ day load total

krish

why should we close the serve? if we use Blue Cash Everyday — we can make nominal profit. is my assumption correct?

I just made a brief comment about serve and suggested closing to avoid a shutdown. Research serve and ms on flyertalk and reddit for more info and explanations

Gerald
Gerald

I’m not willing to load more than one VGC at a time at FD, but with VGCs I’m not worried about fraud, so I can take my time.

Daniel
Daniel

I’m totally new to the gift card buying thing and could use some mentoring here. I just got my ink cash card and have a big bill coming I was going to use it for but through Plastiq. If I can get a few of these gift cards I’ll get 5% because it’s staples, and I can use those gift cards and only get charged 1%?

I’m paying for the over mileage fee on my lease with Toyota financial in case some has a better way of paying that off

Leo
Leo

Just don’t make too many trips to Staples in it, or you’ll be paying for even more overage miles!

MickeyMouse
MickeyMouse

Lol when OD ran the $15 Off $300 promo I must’ve driven at least 250 miles that week…Since most OD’s won’t let you buy GC’s in two seperate transactions.

sunnybaycc

Does Staples allow gift cards to buy gift cards? The nearby Safeway is within 0.1 miles to a Staples. I am thinking about buying 2 $100 mcgc with $3 off and then get a no-fee vgc.

All this talk about multiples, does it mean you can buy multiple $200 VGC in 1 trip or 1 $200 VGC in multiple trips? Asking to meet bonus spend requirement.

Same trip should work, but YMMV.

With last week’s mastercard, you could buy multiple $200 mastercards in one transaction, and the fee was waived on all of them.

MarcoPolo
MarcoPolo

Yeah but they were MGCs and they were probably sitting on shelf for years.
VGC will probably be limited in quantity but staples is desperate to sell anything these days so you’ll never know.

CM

> sitting on shelf for years

Can confirm. The MCGCs I got had a “DO NOT DISPLAY AFTER: February 1, 2019” on the plastic wrapping for the package, and versioned “05/14” on the package (VALID THRU was 07/23, but, still).

I was sceptical about potential compromises with such an old stock, but it was all good. (Probably too old to still be hackable, TBH.)

These deals keep getting worse. Now it’s not even a money maker beyond the credit card points.

If I’m near a Staples next week I’ll see if they let me buy a bunch with no fee. One or two seems like it would be a waste of effort. Picking up 40 in one shot might be worth the hassle, but I don’t really like the $200 cards.

For me not having to deal with rebate makes this the best type of deal in Staples.

20 cards @ 5% that’s $100 definitely a moneymaker. Multiply that by 5 you’ve got an easy vacation with that 😉

Actually it’s $200. (20 x $200/card x 5%) Multiply that by 5 and you can buy two entrance tickets and a hot dog at your namesake’s theme park. 😀

Made it to Staples today. The store limit was 10 cards. Luckily I had one of my employees with me so they let him buy 10 as well, but I used my Ink+ card to pay for both sets.

So now I’ve got 20 of these dumb things. I guess I’ll just burn a few up every time I got to WalMart, but it’s $200 free money. I guess a couple tanks of fuel isn’t too bad.

I wonder if I take two employees tomorrow they’ll let me buy 30 of them? 😀
