The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Staples is offering a coupon for $10 off your next purchase of $30 or more when you bring your unwanted electronics in for recycling

The Fine Print

  • Valid November 12th until November 18th

Our Verdict

Some of your used electronics still have value, so I wouldn’t recommend recycling those for this deal but a lot of other stuff is just trash so that would be worth doing. The actual deal is pretty ordinary, but it’s always better to recycle rather than just dump whenever possible so hopefully it’s enough to encourage some readers to do that. Deal is also better if you have the American Express offer for $20/2,000 back when spending $100+.

“Deal is also better if you have the American Express offer for $20/2,000 back when spending $100+.”

The Amex offer says online only. Is that not correct or can this trade in deal be done online somehow?

Read the clearly displayed terms: no t.v.’s.

What’s not clear is if this can be done multiple times and how long the coupon is good for…

This is a bad deal I can tell. You can easily get $10 off $20 in-store-purchase coupon printed when doing the ink recycle.

Details on how to get the ink coupon please.

OK. To be more precisely, every time when you check out, they print the receipt for you and the last one may have this coupon you’ve been seeing from time to time already: ” X % off your in-store purchase of Y” “X % off your online purchase of Y” ” $X off your Y amount in-store purchase” “$X off your Y amount in-store purchase”. This coupon links to your reward account and it usually has a deadline on it. I don’t know if you grab the deal last week for the $15 rebate VGC for buying over $300. I got several such coupons printed for me, some are $10 off $20 in-store and some are $10 off $30 in-store.

So it’s not because of recycling the ink cart actually. The reason I use ink recycling is because you don’t actually have to buy anything. Even you recycle one ink cart, there may still be a chance that they print out some random coupons along with the receipt for you.

If memory serves me right, Staples had this deal last year and at that time they put $10 for recycled electronic device into your rewards account for the following month’s spend instead of this useless coupon.

Any word on if the $10 off includes gift cards? I don’t see it listed as an exclusion.

You can never use a coupon on gift card purchase in store. I did use it online before to purchase staples gift card with another staples gift card and it worked through at least this April for me. Keep in mind that if you keep trying it they can disable your online rewards account such that you cannot place any order online.

What’s not clear is if one can take advantage of this more than once? Already traded in an old flip style GoPhone, so am wondering if I can do this again with something else–maybe an old mouse?

These coupons are normally valid on regular priced merchandise (so no discount, other coupon or rebate) so pretty much useless considering how overpriced Staples normally is.

Agreed. I tried this last year. Signed up, waited in line, filled out something else, and then received “the coupon” printed on a receipt. With the “coupon” time restrictions and staples otherwise expensive merchandise I never bought anything. There just was no angle I had to score a great deal. Unless you want *that* piece of furniture at *that* staples in-store buying off of Amazon will probably be a better experience.
The posting is appreciated as it may be useful to a few but for the majority, take a pass.

Partially pay for the purchase with a card with Price Protection. Some (all?) of Chase Ink products have it.

It’s an extra step but you get it all – price, coupon, UR x5.

Maybe we can trade in some old trash phones?
