Our Verdict
Basically values miles at 1.25¢ each, but it does lock you into booking a flight in the near future. I think most people either value the miles more highly, or at least prefer the flexibility of not being locked in.
AA has some great award fares right now, I’ve seen cross country flights from 6k miles with business class for only 10k more.
It does not make a lot of sense. You are taking miles, which do not expire with any activity every 18 months, and turning them into a $50 credit (a marginal redemption) which expires after a year. Plus, the rest of your ticket must be paid with a credit card, not miles. So if you cancel for any reason, all of that ticket expires in a year. With a pure miles ticket, it all goes back to miles with no fee if you cancel. If you only have 4,000 or 5,000 miles and don’t plan on acquiring more miles, that might be the only redemption that makes any sense.
My wife was targeted for 5,000 miles for $50 off.
I got “Turn 6,000 miles into $50 off your next flight purchase.* “
