[Targeted] American Express Business Gold: 150,000 Point Offer

Update 5/24/24: There is a direct link you can try, YMMV as always when using these links as there is always a risk of shut down.

The Offer

No direct link to offer, sent out via e-mail. Subject line is ‘<name>, maximize your value on everyday business spending’

  • American Express is offering 150,000 points after $10,000 in spend on the American Express Business Gold card

Card Details

  • $375 annual fee, not waived first year.
  • $240 flexible business credit. Up to $20 in statement credits each month after you use the Business Gold Card for eligible U.S. purchases at FedEx, Grubhub, and Office Supply Stores
  • $12.95 monthly Walmart+ credit.
  • Card earns 4x points on the two categories your business spends the most each billing cycle, from the following list (up to $150,000 in combined purchases each calendar year):
    • Transit purchases including trains, taxicabs, rideshare services, ferries, tolls, parking, buses, and subways
    • Monthly wireless telephone service charges made directly from a wireless telephone service provider in the U.S
    • U.S. purchases at restaurants
    • U.S. purchases for advertising in select media
    • U.S. purchases at gas stations
    • U.S. computer hardware, software, and cloud computing purchases made directly from select providers
  • 3x points on AmEx Travel

Our Verdict

This looks to bypass pop up jail so should be able to get the bonus even if you’ve had the card before, but that might be YMMV. Good deal if targeted, especially if you’ve already had the card before.

I got the targeted email and snail mail offer but when I apply it says We are Sorry. This Offer in currently in use. If you would still like to apply for a Business Card from American Express, click here. And no one at Amex can explain what that message means.

Don’t get how it makes sense to pay this AF when the best I can hope for – with a lot of effort- is 12 $20 pay backs (already have Walmart through pers plat)

I was targeted on my account. Used that to sign up P2 and she was approved. After we finish her spend, I will apply for myself.

How do most people even get to that much spend (other then obvious biz owners)?! For me, a spend like 5k in 3 months is reaching.

My monthly expenses are less than 2k so I can relate. But I do have estimated taxes and property taxes that can take care of a lot of SUBs if timed right.

I do manufactured spending sometimes but I still do a lot of spending with estimated taxes. Lower your W-4 withholdings and pay estimated taxes to meet SUB spend.

That’s why biz cards have higher spend thresholds than personal. So don’t get it if you don’t have a business.

Spend into the future. In my case, I have zero debt and few recurring payments. However, sometimes I will have thousands of dollars of credit with my electric company, gas company, and water bill (my town). Also, I fly certain airlines regularly and so can fill my United travel bank, for instance, with a few thousand. Another option is to pre-pay my pool servicing company (~$1000) for the year. These in addition to our regular spending can get me over these large spend requirements. In some cases you can ramp up your insurance and then cancel after a week, and request the refund in the form of a paper check mailed to you. You can also pay certain things for family members and have them give you cash. What I won’t do is go stand in line at Walmart buying thousands and thousands of dollars worth of money orders via this method or that and then deposit those MOs back into my bank account. I’m not that desperate.

And of course funding bank accounts – especially those that give you a bonus to open them – with a credit card on which you’re trying to meet spend. That way, you get a bonus both for the card and for opening the account (for which you used a card).

I try to prepay things like car insurance, health insurance, phone bill, utility bills. Otherwise sometimes I’ll have large purchases or travel expenses that I can put on the card. I usually don’t make large purchases without having a bonus to meet these days, unless it is an immediate purchase I can’t plan.

Tuition (state university) for my oldest is around $7,000 a semester every July and December. Insurance is also a big one for us every April. I usually sign up for cards with higher spends around these events

Thank you everyone for the suggestions on min spend. Some of these I already do, and some I plan on looking into. As someone with low monthly spend, it seems to be really tough to get through more than ~4 SUBs per year.

Got this offer with incognito browser. Probably close it after a year since i couldnt justify the AF. Only use $240 at office supply for Amazon GC. The rest of benefits and multiplier I already have different cards to cover.

Up to $20 in statement credits each month after you use the Business Gold Card for eligible U.S. purchases at FedEx, Grubhub, and Office Supply Stores”

Assuming Staples and office max/depot come under Office supply stores, does the purchase have to be in store or do online purchases also count?

Both counts but if you want to get GC, go to the store instead.

Yes you can just buy the online staples giftcards and it triggers it. Been doing it since the change no clawbacks. Amex doesn’t care about closed loop GC.
