Our Verdict

Looks to be showing up for people with the American Express gold card. Not as good as the other upgrade offers we’ve seen in the past for 60,000 points but still something I guess.  If you haven’t had the card before my recommendation would be to wait for a 100,000 point offer to come along that you’re eligible for. If you have any questions about upgrade offers, please read this post before asking any questions. General American Express questions are likely answered here.

If I do the $100 airline credit of the gold card before upgrading. Will I get another $200 airline credit or just $100 for the upgraded card?

You should get another $200 airline credit. Just upgraded from gold -> platinum in December. I used up the $100 airline credit before upgrading.

Saw a 60K upgrade offer with $5K spend last month in my account. Called in to check expiration date and was told the offer is 75K MR. Upgraded right away and points have been posted. Would encourage people to call in as the offer might be higher than online

I got one of those in the mail 60K for 5k spend upgrade offer, what was the spend requirement for the 75K?

Anyone got DPs on how many months of serious spend it takes to avoid the popup for the 75-100k Plat offer?

Background: P2 keeps getting the popup. I closed her plat AU card and a Hilton Surpass in Dec and have been putting $1k-plus/month on her remaining 3 cards (Aspire, Gold, BCP). Only BCP was regularly used before.

Just curious how many months of increased spend she’ll need to have before the popup goes away.

There’s no solid answer. It’s different for everyone. For me…

2018 – Applied for Aspire card, got popup. I tried 3 days later and no pop up.
2020 – Applied for Plat Biz in May, got popup. Tried again at the end of June, no pop up.

Cool, thanks. I’ll try every week or so. I’m glad the Amex popup at least gives you the option to cancel before submitting or credit check.

I was getting popups when I applied Nov 12/13th. I increased my spend on 2/5 cards, started using 2 cards again (just some Uber Eats on one, and an AF on the other). I tried again 3 days ago, it went to review, and was approved today.

2/5 cards had new spend on it, 2/5 cards had increased spend, 1/5 cards stayed with no spend.

I see this in my account but it has the lifetime language restriction on bonuses even though it’s an upgrade.

Very interesting. I took this (25k $2k) in Oct and earned the points despite having received a Platinum sign up bonus before. Didn’t see any lifetime language.

I received and accepted the 60k upgrade offer from Green that I got last Jan 15. It had no life time language. I took it because I just cancelled my prior PER PLAT last year.

If I upgrade a card that I opened less than a year ago would they claw back the welcome bonus for that card? For example if I just opened a Gold card mid 2020 and upgraded that same card, would that be considered closing the Gold card in Amex eyes?
