Our Verdict
Looks like gift cards will work. Very slight resale play depending on the rates available to you, but probably not really worth considering to be honest.

can we buy a third party gift cards or only gap brands? thanks
Ibotta has a promotion going for 9% at Gap, plus $3 for a purchase of $10 or more. There's a second bonus that you can do the $3 bonus a second time on another purchase. The Amex offer can spread across multiple transactions, so the rebate can be 9% + $3 + $3 +20. There's also a sale going on now with a promo code that's putting some items at half off, however I don't know if it works with the portal.
Online only means going into a store will not work for gift cards, or anything else.

@will Physical gift cards will work online too. Notice that the terms only exclude "gift cards from online outlets/ factories". Gap.com, Athleta.com etc. are not their outlet/factory domains.
Anyway, I placed a pGC order to test my hypothesis and triggered the "Great news! You just used your Amex Offer for $20.00 cash back at GAP ONLINE" email immediately.

+1. Purchased a physical giftcard from gap.com and received the email immediately that I triggered it. Takes 5-10 business days to ship.

In the first part you wrote that the offer is only valid on their brand websites but then you state that "gift cards will work, but only in store." I'm confused, can you buy gift cards online with this offer?
