Our Verdict

If you’re not familiar with the Southwest companion pass, I’d recommend reading our dedicated post on it. Basically it means a companion can fly for free with you (even on flights booked with points), you just need to pay the $5.60 security fee. LGB – OAK probably has the cheapest flights at $39 (Tuesday/Wednesday) or $54 (weekends).

I understand that you have to get 110,000 points in order to get the companion pass.
Two questions.
1. I understand that transfer points from UR doesn’t count towards the companion pass rewards, but I saw that if I get the Southwest Premier Personal and business, the points from the two cards when combined will count. What I am wondering is, if my wife and I both get SW Premier personal Credit cards, could we combine the points into one account and will those points qualify despite the fact that it is a transfer?
2. Do I have to start from 0 points and work my way up every year to qualify for the companion pass reward? If I have 70,000 Rapid Rewards to begin the year, could I work my way up to 110,000 and get the companion Pass for that year?

Found a fare TPA-DEN for $129, to LAX for $118 and $122.

The Florida market is one of the best intra continental market for this promotion if one needs to travel anyway. I wasn’t targeted anyway, just sharing.

I’ve got this offer. Now the question is, if its a good deal or not. Suppose the intra California flights cost $70 one-way. So 10 flights mean $700. Hmm that’s not too bad considering the value of the CP could be a lot. However, you’ll need to travel a lot in order to get the most value out of the CP. That also means you’ll need to buy a ticket for one person each time you travel. Its also worth mentioning here that 6 months have already passed, so one can only take advantage of this offer for 1.5 years, rather than the full 2 years.

Do you think its a good deal?

Southwest runs occasional sales which can bring that one-way price down as low as $59. On a previous promotion like this I had planned anyway to fly LAX-PHX. But I “needed” an extra segment to reach 10 flights and instead made the itinerary LAX-LAS-PHX. I enjoyed lunch on the Vegas strip before heading back to McCarran. And the companion pass issued later paid off nicely (over $400 in value) on a cross-country trip. Used points for my ticket, wife flew free except for the $5.60 each way.
