Update 7/18/19: Deal is back, this time valid through July 31st, 2019.

The Offer

No direct link, targeted offer; check your emails for subject: June Special: 1.5% fee on any three payments

  • For this month only, submit up to three payments with Plastiq ($10,000 or less each) and benefit from a 1.5% Plastiq fee.

  • You can submit up to 3 one-time payments like this before 11:59 PM EST on June 30, 2019

The Fine Print

  • Promotion is available only to direct recipients of this email notifying them of their eligibility.
  • Cannot be combined with other Plastiq promotions or fee free dollars (FFDs). This promotion is non-transferable.
  • Payments must be made with a credit card associated with this eligible member’s account and must not exceed $10,000 per transaction.
  • Eligible customers can submit immediate payments or schedule payments to be processed before 11:59 PM EST on June 30, 2019.
  • The Plastiq 1.5% fee will automatically be applied when the payment is processed.
  • Editing, altering, canceling or rescheduling payments with this promotion applied will forfeit the service fee rate of 1.5%
  • This promotion does not apply to any scheduled payments submitted before 12:01 AM EST on June 10, 2019.

Our Verdict

We saw similar deals in the past. Those were for a lower fee of just 1%, but this deal is better since it allows the use of any credit card (not limited to Mastercard), and it allows payment to existing payees (not limited to new recipients), and you can do the payments as you wish, with or without scheduling it.

You can read our review of Plastiq here. If you’re signing up as a new customer, consider using my Plastiq referral link – you’ll get $500 in free processing after you do $500 in paid processing.

Reader Ted notes that you have to click through the link in the email in order to get the 1.5% rate; otherwise, it’ll show the regular 2.5% rate.

Did anyone get the FFD for the highest of 2 payments over $2K from October? Was supposed to post by Nov 15 but mine never did.

Were you also targeted for the earlier promos in October (1.5% fee, and/or up to 5,000 FFDs)? And if so, did you use those promos already?

It kinda seems that the Plastiq promos get better closer to the end of the month. I used a promo in October already, and I didn’t get today’s 1% email; I wonder if I had waited, if they would’ve sent me the 1% offer.

I was targeted for earlier promotions, maybe about a year ago, but not any recent ones. I had a bunch of 1.5% fee mortgage and HOA fee payments scheduled on my Double Cash card’s expiration date (May 2020) due to a mistake with a past promo that should have been limited to 3 payments. I was able to add three more payments with a 1% fee with this promo (and tried adding more without success – the next attempted payment after the first three got the standard 2.5% fee).

I got this message at the payment processing page:

“Unfortunately, American Express only allows Plastiq to process payments in the following categories: Residential Rent and Condo/HOA Fees, Taxes/Government Fees, Clubs, Utilities (sewer, gas, electricity, sanitation), Education/Tuition/Childcare
Please switch your card to a Visa, MasterCard or Discover card.
If you believe you have received this message in error, please contact our Customer Support team.“

I got an interesting one: Three payments for 1.5% of up to $2000 and/or match the largest payment deal. So, make $12,000 worth of payments for 1.46% AND $6,000 in payments for 1.5%.

Regions Visa cards count Plastiq payments as cash advance.

Do NOT use Regions visa credit cards or you’ll get screwed.

Just started to use Plastiq. I need to do a 500 payment to receive the FFD. Is 500 included in the fee or only payment counts? Thanks

Plastiq is on fire these days. Player 2 received the 3x $10K payments with 1.5% fee. So easy to earn $150 on a 2% cashback card.

Targeted Single $2,000 payment =2K FFD
+
PSA on MS Tutiton/Property tax and get check for overages back

FWIW I had to re-read the offer my DW got some may need to make ONLY one $2.000 payment instead of two. Email read:

“It’s so simple, it’s spooky: from October 11th to October 31st submit at least one payment of $2,000 or more and we’ll match the largest payment with up to 5,000 FFDs!”

Works out nicely as our annual property tax bills are due this November and certified 10.10.19

Whadda you know that if you have a credit balance they mail you a check back for any overages -but YMMV never liked paying taxes but knocking out two Amex MSR @ 1.375~1.5% makes it less painful.

If you pay property tax – use Plastiiq, split your payment over two cards i.e. property tax is $6,700 make a $4,100 and a $3,600 payment. Make it look like a math error and send on two different days.

If you use their web portal and overpay with a card they may credit the overage back to one of the credit cards instead if cutting a check. Almost a costly lesson.

Tution
If your child gets scholarship’s that are dispersed quarter/semester (you can overpay before dispersement (with Plastiq) and they will DD/mail a check for overages – but you have to coordinate with your child. As well either use a biz card with 0% or have cash to float till refund arrives or it’s a Personal card. (You want a physical check mailed by Plastiq not an ACH, or using a CC and paying direct through University portal, same issue of credit to card used to make payment.

For property tax, be aware that in some cases (e.g., my county in California), they don’t allow partial payments. Though, I haven’t tried it to see what they do.

Many Oregon counties give a 3% discount for full payment by 11.15 also 2% for 2/3. Property taxes are at county level here.

I did a small test payment to see if check would be returned to Plastiq,
or overpayment check sent to Plastiq. It was off season but got a check from county for overage about 21 days after hitting enter on Plastiq website.

Hard to believe they would refuse a partial payment esp if full payment was made by due date.

Steve
My overpayment that was before tax bills were sent out or certified online.

They also state online that they only “accept” payment after taxes are certified.

Some mortgage companies hold partial payments in suspense till full payment is made ( for people trying to shorten loan with bi-weekly payments). While unlikely they hold in suspense -its doubtful they would prevent partial payment on tax due – but interest might accrue on full amount (but likely only if past due).

Just so nobody does the same mistake I did, don’t do a payment using free dollars (the 2000 from last month’s promo in my case) and then try to make three more payments at 1.5. Apparently the zero fee one counted towards the three and I’m back up to 2.5.

+1 I lost out on one as well. I made 2 payments with the 1.5% promo and then setup a couple payments with FFDs (before I saw your post that is). When I came back to make the 3rd promo payment its showing the 2.5% fee now.
