Tip: Don’t Use Amex App to Find Amex Offers (Caps at 50 Offers)

Numerous readers and others have noticed that a recent Amex Offer wasn’t showing in the Amex app, but did show for them on the ordinary website (desktop or on the mobile website in browser). Apparently, the Amex app caps us at being able to see 50 offers which means there are many hidden offers you can’t see.

I’ve long been aware of the cap of 100 offers on the regular site, but don’t recall hearing the app is capped at 50. The 100 limit often doesn’t matter since there may be fewer offers available, or you may have saved some offers bringing your total under 100. But the 50-cap means the app is essentially useless for checking. (Maybe they put the newer offers on top and those usually remain visible?)

Some people even save some offers just to have them removed from the ‘Available’ tab, thus keeping their total under 100 and making everything visible. Again, this method is harder in the app since you’ll have to save dozens of offers to get yourself under 50.

Wow, you’re right! I was waiting for the 10k VZ offer to populate on the app today and it never did. Logged in to the website, and there it was! I’ll never rely on app-only for Amex Offers from now on. DoC: proving once again that even on Halloween, some heroes don’t wear capes.

Same here! I did a quick check on the app and didn’t see it, so thought I wasn’t targeted. Sat down at a desktop and it was there! Thanks!

Chuck If one has more than a 100 Offers saved, will a ‘invisible offer’ still get triggered upon use regardless of the fact we can’t see more than 100 saved offers?

RM

CodeAdam10 Chuck Yes, invisible saved offers still get triggered. Ran into this exact situation a few months ago.

Personally I wrote and use this script, which scrapes Amex’s webpage and sends me a daily email digest of all my new and enrolled amex offers. Beats having to check the webpage over and over: https://github.com/karwosts/amex-offer-monitor

That looks quite useful, thanks for sharing. Do you have any other users that you know about?

I know I’ve shared it once or twice and have fielded occasional support questions, but it’s fairly new and I advertise it very rarely, so if there are other users I’d guess only a handful. You need a minor amount of technical aptitude to get it setup and running as well, which may limit the audience somewhat.

Since you mentioned it, I assume that you can see more than 100 offers this way?

Tim
Tim

No, it just captures whatever you would normally see with a web browser.

Awesome app. Would it be possible to have offers claimed automatically?

Enter my username, password, and (potentially) a portion of my Social Security Number on a program created by a stranger on the internet?

And people actually do this???

He is providing the source. You could read and understand exactly what the code does. Like what domain it send data to.

I did not even know about the 100 max listing on the website…

The good news is I found the offer on AmEx site thanks to this great DoC tip, the bad news is in my haste to add it, applied it to the wrong card, costing myself 400 MR in the process. D’oh! I so wish AmEx would allow offers to be moved among all available cards once “added”

I wasn’t aware of the 100 limit. This kind of annoys me, because this becomes just another thing to manage. So basically you need to have a throwaway Amex card to add a bunch of BS retail offers to, so you have the ability to add the real offers you care about to a different card you use.

I have been annoyed by the need to manage this for a while, as well as the difficulty in seeing new offers through all the clutter. Amex could make this easier by letting us hide or dismiss offers, or putting new offers at the top. My theory is they haven’t done it because there’s no upside for attracting their retail partners; if anything the current system pads their engagement numbers more.

Thanks for the idea of a throwaway card.

No problem. There are so few of these offers I actually want… you would have to be a serious shopper to get even 10% use.

My amex offers for all cards in the app is empty.

Saving some offers, even if you don’t want them, may trigger AMEX to serve up additional offers. Same logic is true for Chase Offers.

I have more than 100 offers saved on my no-fee Amex Everyday card (which is use once or twice a year). I save all the offers that I don’t care about on this card,so they don’t clutter my other cards. There is definitely no 100 saved offer limit because I have been over 100 on saved offers for many months now, and I still see plenty of good offer on my other cards.

Interesting that you get so many offers on the no-fee Everyday. I used to get lots of offers on my Everyday Preferred, but I don’t think I’ve gotten a single one since I downgraded it to the no-fee about two months ago.

How are people getting 50, let alone 100 offers? I have 3 offers across all my cards with 5 added (ignoring all the “refer a friend” type ‘offers’ in the list)

Gadget 🕵️

Not sure who you pissed off, but even on my Serve card I have 31. And it’s basically never been out of the house, and never made a real purchase.

Anameofaguy

Yeah, I must have really done it to someone . I haven’t had a valuable offer in any card since they killed the multiple login workaround. Not even those Marriott deal direct links work for me.

Always getting the “offers are currently unavailable please try again later” on the web version. Anybody knows why?

Bill M
Bill M

I just assumed this was common knowledge. I haven’t relied on the app just about from the first time I used it because it was obvious there were a lot fewer offers visible. My oldest Amex card very often has over 100 offers so I add enough to get it under under 100 to be certain I am seeing all that are available.

Amex needs to up it’s game regarding displaying Amex offers, even on the website. BoA Offers and Chase Offers are displayed as square icons which you click on to know the details, which is much more space efficient. The vertical scrolling you need to do to read all your Amex Offers is a huge annoyance. Furthermore, the least they can do it group by merchant category – Dining, Travel, Retail.
