Wells Fargo Propel American Express Card Review (New Card)

Wells Fargo have just launched a new credit card: Wells Fargo Propel American Express. Let’s take a look at this card to see if it’s worth signing up for.

  • No annual fee
  • No sign up bonus
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 3X points at U.S. gas stations
    • 2X points at U.S. restaurants
    • 1X points on all other purchases
  • 10% bonus points when maintain a qualifying consumer Wells Fargo Checking or Savings Account, or PMA® Package

Wells Fargo launched this new product because their three existing products (Well Fargo Propel World, Wells Fargo Propel 365 & Wells Fargo Business Elite) have annual fees and customers were interested in the features of the card but wanted it without an annual fee. Personally I don’t see any value in signing up for this card, it’s possible to get 5x on gas purchases and 3x on restaurant purchases. Even with the 10% bonus this card is simply not competitive.

Fingers crossed Wells Fargo decides to add a sign up bonus on this card to make it more attractive. If you’re thinking about applying for this card then remember that Wells Fargo usually wants you to have a banking relationship with them before approving you. Just wanted to add some insight. I opened a Wells Fargo savings and checking account today and before I made my opening deposits I had the banker put the app in for American Express Propel with no annual fee. I didn’t have a banking relationship with them until today. I was instantly approved with 8k line.fyi FICO at 762

Got declined by WF for a recent application for both the propel 365 and the 5% rewards card. I had very clean credit history with fairly high score. Did a mini-app-o-rama on that day and WF was the only bank that declined me…. and the only bank that declined me for at least the past two years … and the only bank who declined my checking account application earlier …

They are undoubtedly the meanest bank.

5x card will only be approved if you have no cc with wf for a while. So, applying for another card at the same time as 5x is not a good idea. The best way to get approved is to have a checking account with them for several month. Longer your history and hogher your balance, more chances you will get the cc and higher your cl is going to be.

Forget Wells Fargo. They take simply FOREVER to post the points you earn (like MONTHS), and the whole tracking thing is impossible to figure out they give you so little information.

WF points can be 1.75 cpm, so 3.3 x 1.75 without limit and a threat of a financial review? Seems a good deal, esp. that 7/11 is a gas station.

Visa Signature gives you 1.5 on airline tickets. If you spent over $50k, I believe, it goes to 1.75. This is not written anywhere, if I understand it correctly, but many people reported it in FT WF thread. Easy to do when you get 5x card for 6 month. Obviously, if you keep any WF card you would not be able to churn 5x card. Reports on FT that its possible to churn 6-12 month after you close all WF credit accounts.

So I guess the only difference between this is and the Propel 365 is the slight tradeoff, no fee vs no bonus. This could be useful for someone to downgrade to after getting the bonus on one of the other annual fee Propel Cards.

Do you think this means the Propel 365 will be phased out?

Reference to the annual Program fee have been deleted as there is no annual reward Program fee associated
with this credit card.
