What’s Going On With ARS & U.S. Bank? Will They Instantly Deny You With A Frozen Report?

Recently there has been reports of people being automatically denied for U.S. Bank credit cards if they have had their ARS credit reports frozen according to card investigation representatives. This is one of two credit reports that we recommend freezing to improve your chances of being approved. According to some this is a new policy at U.S. Bank. I thought it would be helpful to look at the data:

Approved

Denied

  • 1 (denial was after two approvals), 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

My Thoughts

I think there are a few possible explanations:

  • This is an easy excuse for representatives to use for denials
  • If you’re instantly approved for a card then ARS isn’t necessary but if you’re denied and it’s frozen then reconsideration isn’t possible
  • This is a new rule and hasn’t been 100% implemented or the data points are sufficiently old that they aren’t relevant

Feel free to share your datapoints in the comments below.

Just another DP:

I got auto approval for the personal Olympic FlexPerks promo with ARS frozen. There was a theory that it was only for business cards?

Went to pending with both frozen, and approved a bit later, personal. So I don’t think ARS frozen is going to always get declined if it goes to recon…

Froze my wife’s and mine, I was approved for regular and business on the last Friday of August, and she was approved for the regular one (but not business due to too many inquiries).

I posted in one of the Olympic DoC threads that I was approved in a grocery store branch albeit a low CL. None of the CRs including the two in this discussion were frozen. I was pleasantly shocked due to recent number of new accounts I have opened in the recent months and day prior to my application.
This week the 20,000 signup bonus points were paid.
US Bank Rewards Center telephone rep says the Olympic bonus itself will be posted up to six weeks after the Sept 30 purchase something deadline

Yeah add me to the DP for the denied.

Applied for both business and personal at the same time (business first). Both went to pending for a while…
I then called to be informed that the personal was approved a few days prior without any communications. I then asked about the business one and was told to speak with verification dept (credit investigation department). I was then questioned why my ARS/Sage was frozen and was instructed to unfreeze it before applying again.

I also wondered they were just being difficult on business card?

USB closed my two new accounts, personal and business flexperks from Olympics promo, along with my other two accounts from last year (flexperks amex and club carlson). Haven’t got a chance to talk to the person who made decision but the guy I spoke to was because they “discovered” later there were a bunch of other accounts opened recently and would like to see how I handled those first. I’ve only had about 4 new personal accounts this calendar year… Somebody doesn’t want to pay out these Olympics bonuses.

Now I need to see if they’ll let me cash out my 80k+ Flexperks I already had….

Looks like there are other data points at Shawn’s site too. http://milestomemories.boardingarea.com/us-bank-denial-ars-sagestream/

Yup. Same reason for me. Never approved.

what’s the reason of denial for you? Was it a personal card or business card application.

If your reply was for Ted… I am a little bit confused. I think Ted’s post was about how his accounts with USB got closed rather than being denied for an application.

Denied. Too many new cards in the last 6 months and they wanted to see how I would handle them. A 20 year credit history and excellent credit score meant nothing. That wasn’t good enough for them to think that I know how to handle credit.

I think the assumption is if you are applying for 2/3 cards you are up shits creek and need the money badly or something so you are a high risk.

Joe
Joe

Please be specific. Did they give you the “last 6 months” figure”? Dd they say how many cards were too many – or if not, how many new cards did you have in the period they specified (which was apparently too much for them)?

Time to start collecting firm data points, folks, to find out US Bank’s “5/24” threshold.

It’s a new day. Again.

Same here. Froze reports. Personal app went to pending, rep said all looked good but was under normal review. Received a denial letter. Recon said I’d opened too many new accounts in last six months, and they wanted to see how I handled paying them. That sounded bogus to me, with a long credit record of paying bill.b

Any DPs suggesting an existing cardholder will be approved with ARS frozen?

My ARS remain frozen from a few years ago when I applied, but I have an open USB Flexperks card still & have considered applying for another USB card.

Ed –

I called today (September 20, 2016) and was just denied for the FlexPerks Business Edge Visa card and I have four current US Bank cards – including one business card (Club Carlson) and three personal cards (Club Carlson, Cash Plus, and, of all things, the AMEX *FlexPerks* Select Plus). All were opened between June 30, 2013 and December 12, 2014. I do not have any deposit accounts with U.S. Bank.

I was told specifically that the reason was that my ARS file was frozen. My stellar payment history, low credit utilization, and true FICO Score-8 of 803 meant nothing for this manual review. When I asked about a waiver or override, the answer was “No – Management Policy”.

I could HUCA, but I was transferred to this person specifically – three times – as they were assigned my case. Another CS rep would do the same.

Debating on whether an old-fashioned letter would make any difference. 99.999% not, but it would be good to vent on the extremely customer unfriendly unannounced policy – especially as the only recourse is to unfreeze and reapply. Of course, this is beyond the timeframe for the Olympic bonus!

Then again, I do max out the Cash Plus each quarter and don’t want to lose that money stream … decisions, decisions.

Cheers.

I would probably be careful on recon.

People have reported that all their accounts with US bank being pulled due to “business decision.”

Same here that Recon leading to more eyes on the account, and then… all cards pulled:

Eric –

Yes, I had read those reports as well. (They’re the reason I added that bit about my Cash Plus card.)

I should also point out that my transferred “three times” was because of a mis-transfer and then a dropped cell call – I only spoke to her directly once.

I did put my letter on hold to take the written equivalent of “counting to 10” before responding. I’ll probably not send it, but dang, it was very eloquently written, if I do say so myself 🙂

Thank you for your replies.

Cheers.

I agree with agree with Eric. It is better not to put too much pressure on US Bank or it will backfire and US Bank could decide to close all your accounts.

My recommendation: be friendly and polite and let US Bank have the last word. Make US Bank feel like the king and wait 4-6 months before another app.

Was my previous comment not successfully posted?

Anyway – another DP for the denied. Applied for both business and personal. Personal got approved but business was denied. Credit investigation team (verification) cited that (frozen ARS) as a reason and told me to unfreeze ARS/Sage before applying again.

It seems that they are being extra hard on business card: https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/531cf8/frustration_friday_week_of_september_16_2016/d7q2mc5

They’ve been hard on the business card for years now. No instant approval and will ask for tax returns showing business income. And no, you shouldn’t apply for personal and biz at the same time. That’s outdated advice.

Eric
Eric

There were a couple DPs showing that people did successfully apply for both personal and business cards with US bank on the same day in the past. I dont think it’s an auto denial for the business card if applied along with personal card.

Please see the DPs above. The denial for business card is mostly due to frozen ARS and that’s a recent development.

I applied a few weeks ago for Flexperks. No instant approval. Called and was told they couldn’t process the application because ARS was frozen. I withdrew the application. No hardpull

I applied for a cash+ VS card on 9/9. Was approved (low CL though) and i have ARS frozen.

I applied Aug 3rd and had my ARS frozen previously. I was told that they would give me a decision shortly and on August 9th was told I was approved.

I got approved for both cash+ and olympics after ars & sage frozen. though both went for pending review and took several days for approval
8/5 – cash+ – $5000 CL
8/22 – Olympics – $17000 CL

Only one hard enquiry for both cards together

Applied for FlexPerks Business on 9/3. Automatically approved on 9/9. Neither CR was frozen. I was 4/24.

Jeff S,
Jeff S,

ARS & Sage frozen in July 2016 right after opening a checking acct. with US Bank.

Applied for Cash + 18 July – 8700 CL
Applied for Olympics Flex Perks 1 Sep – 10K CL

2 pulls, Equifax.

Personally I think I would have been approved, frozen reports or not, because those reports have almost no data on me. But, I took the advice just to play the safe side.

Jeff S,
Jeff S,

I forgot to add – both approvals were not instant and took a couple or few days.

Called recon after applying for olympics promo on 9/3. Denied for too many accounts. I offered to move CL from existing card, still would’t do it. Guess I should be glad they haven’t closed the current card yet? I do have a checking account w/ them.

Sam

Maybe I don’t understand. I froze my credit so that it would prevent people from assuming my identity and opening credit in my name. Wouldn’t it be a good thing if a bank did not issue credit because they were frozen. That was the whole point I thought. I would be more upset if they did extend credit.

Chuck

This is a small credit bureau which isn’t widely used.
