Which Online Retailers Earn 3x with Bank of America Cash Rewards?

The Bank of America Cash Rewards card allows you to choose one of 6 categories which earns 3% back on purchases up to $2,500 per quarter. The six categories are: gas, online shopping, dining, travel, drug stores, or home improvement and furnishings. It’s especially interesting since relationship customers get as much as 5.25% back due to the 75% rewards boost.

A lot of people have asked about which online merchants are included in the Online Shopping category. Most regular online retailers should work, e.g. Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Newegg.com, etc., but we won’t know for certain until we hear actual reports on the ground.

Please contribute any data points you have in the comments below. Feel free to add any data points about the other categories as well, but the online shopping category will be the primary focus here.

You can follow along the comments to see what works, or you can use the Comments Search Bar (found direct above the comments) to look up a particular website. I’ll also incorporate any data points found in the comments here into our Payments Workshop which tracks such information across many cards and programs.

great thread. the online category is the only one that will increase my cash back with my current set of cards, so I was wondering what merchants are included.

Hopefully, this means all Paypal transactions work!

Perhaps not, I tried to pay for an EBay purchase and it didn’t take. Paid with another credit card. However, on the BoA website, it list Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, but not PayPal.

I can verify eBay shipping charges that use PayPal count for 3%

I can second this DP as well. I would assume it also works for eBay seller invoices, but we’ll have to wait and see.

On the other hand, PayPal shipping labels purchased directly through PayPal do not code as online purchases for bonus purposes.

This has been inconsistent for me. Most of the time it works, but sometimes it inexplicably doesn’t. The transactions look identical to me save for amount, and there isn’t a pattern on which shipping services have/haven’t worked.

Edit: Visa 123

When contributing DPs would you specify MC or Visa? Sometimes the cards code differently. For me paypal codes as 3x on Cash Rewards Visa.

Successes:
1. Gift card purchase from costco.com
2. Gift card purchase from kroger.com

Failures:
1. mygiftcardsplus

Thank you very much for the costco dp. Was it Visa or Mastercard?

I also made a GC purchase from costco.com and was successful with 3%. BoA Cash Rewards Visa.

Ah crap I just did mygiftcardsplus last night. Did you do it as a paypal transaction? I did (the charge is still pending)

Mygiftcardsplus order with a MC just confirmed for 3X. Maybe your failure was from not using Paypal?

madage

@deerseason is correct. mygiftcardsplus.com through PayPal is 3X on Visa, too.

AirBnb seems to have coded as online shopping. Same for Raise and AA.

So far all my eBay-via-Paypal transactions have coded with the bonus. I am buying coins, but I am not sure if it is the category or the seller that matters to BofA as I saw a report that cellular reload cards did not work.

And walmart.com worked for me (no big surprise).

Nothing has failed yet, I have only used those 2 sites.

I’m especially curious if I can use this card to pay my eBay seller invoice and shipping fees. I’ll give it a shot and report back.

I would assume so, since I have the Barclays uber card and it counts ebay seller invoices as 2%, for “online transaction”. Both cards are visa

Yes it does, I paid my eBay seller fees and via Paypal using the BofA card and got the bonus

They have a detailed list online.
Some classes of merchants are excluded from the Online Shopping category such as doctors and hospitals, government services and taxes, insurance, membership organizations, schools, utilities and other non-retail services.

But their list is just examples, not exhaustive. As an example, they list Uber but not Lyft (in both the travel and online options).

what bout paying auto insurance with PayPal? Any brave man has tried this yet? thanks

Snorlax

Interesting, which insurance companies accept PayPal? I used to change insurance companies ever few years so I’ve used a lot (off the top of my head: State Farm, Travelers, GEICO, The Hartford, Progressive, USAA) but never seen PayPal as a payment option.

I did this awhile back to meet minimum spend requirements because Essurance wouldn’t take Amex but would would take Paypal. It coded as a Paypal purchase, so I don’t see why it wouldn’t apply here.

Data point: Progressive w/ PayPal did NOT trigger for Online Shopping category.

Stubhub worked and paypal works depending on what it is, if it’s actually an online shopping transaction it should work. Otherwise it won’t
