Why You Shouldn’t Use My Referral Links

On this blog I often post referral links (don’t worry, I always clearly mark them as such) while using those links is a way for you to help this site out it’s actually not in your best interests to use them. Today I’m going to talk about why you shouldn’t use mine (or anybody else’s) referral links and what you should be doing instead.

Why You Shouldn’t Use My Links

The main reason why you shouldn’t use my referral links is that you can get more value by not using them. In general when you use somebodies referral link they receive a bonus, we can use this to our advantage to get something when we sign up using somebody else’s link.

  • Conga lines. To join a Conga line you need to use the person who joined last’s referral link, you then add your own and the next person to join will use your link. I find Conga lines work best when you get the referral bonus just for signing up and don’t need to complete any other requirements. There are a number of places where you can join Conga’s, here are my favorites:
  • Referral websites. These websites let you earn points for every referral link you use. You can then use your points to “buy” referrals from other people. The idea being that you can get referrals for programs that you actually want to use, rather than ones you don’t.
  • Use a friend/family members link. In this case you’ll want to use a link from somebody you trust and then you can split the reward between the two of you (or work out some other agreement). This is particularly good when the referral link offers an on going reward, if you use a Conga Line/Referral link the referral you’ll receive is as active as you.

Let’s have a look at a specific example, Hotel Engine offers a $25 credit to everybody that signs up. Your booking must be for $50+ and after you’ve completed your stay the person who referred you would received $25 in credit as well. If I knew I was going to make a booking with Hotel Engine then I’d try to use the link of somebody I knew, because the chances that somebody who uses my referral link in a conga/referral website won’t actually complete a booking.

Obviously you’re not always going to know somebody that has a link in that situation, in which case I’d probably use the Saverocity Conga section as I think somebody on there is more likely to make a booking than on Flyertalk or Refaround.

Why You Should Use Them

All that being said, if you do want to use my links as a way of saying thank you for the content I (and the other writers) provide then it’s very much appreciated. I almost never use Conga lines or referral linking websites and that’s because I want to thank other bloggers that provide useful content, but if you really want to maximize your own value then you should definitely be using these sites.
