[YMMV] Add An Authorized User To American Express Platinum & Get 5,000 Membership Rewards (Up To 4 AUs/20,000 Points)

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • American Express is offering 5,000 Membership Rewards points when you add an authorized user to your American Express Platinum card. That authorized user must also spend $500 within three months. You can add a total of 4 authorized users as part of this deal and get a total of 20,000 Membership Rewards points.

The Fine Print

  • SSN is not required over the phone. Keep in mind American Express is good at linking accounts so I wouldn’t do this for somebody worried about their 5/24 status.

Our Verdict

Easiest option is to add gold authorized users, this has no fees and gives the following:

  • Fee Credit for Global Entry or TSA Pre✓ (yes, each individual authorized user [up to 99 total] get their own credit. Yes, I’ve confirmed this)
  • Card earns at same rates as primary cardholder:
    • 5x points per $1 spent on purchases made with airlines or with American Express Travel
    • 5x points per $1 spent on hotel bookings made directly from the American Express travel website
    • 1x points on all other purchases

The other option is to add platinum authorized users, the first three cost $175 (for all three, not per cardholder) and an each additional cardholder is another $175. That means the best ‘value’ would be to add three authorized users for $175 and get 15,000 points (requiring $500 spend per cardholder). In terms of what the authorized cardholders get, you can view those in full here but there are some useful benefits:

  • Lounge access:
    • Centurion lounge access
    • International American Express lounge access
    • Delta SkyClub lounge access
    • Priority pass select membership
    • Airspace lounge access
  • Fee Credit for Global Entry or TSA Pre✓
  • Hidden Benefits
  • SPG gold status
  • Hilton Honors Gold Status
  • Card earns at the same rate as the primary cardholder:
    • 5x points per $1 spent on purchases made with airlines or with American Express Travel
    • 5x points per $1 spent on hotel bookings made directly from the American Express travel website
    • 1x points on all other purchases

It might be worth it for some people to add authorized users if they have friends/family that want lounge access but don’t want to sign up for credit cards (getting them to give you $60 for the privilege means you break even/make a small profit. Good friends teach them the churning ways though). Keep in mind the authorized users don’t get their own $200 airline reimbursement (but any charges they make will qualify for the primary cardholders benefit) and you’re responsible for any purchases they make.

It seems like American Express are rolling out these offers on a lot of their cards, for example:

Probably worth calling to see if any other cards have similar offers. Feel free to share your datapoints in the comments here.

Has anyone received their bonus points yet? I added three AUs and completed the spend a while ago but have not received the points NOR been charged the $175 fee. Weird.

Didn’t realize that the AUs can apply for the Gold version and have no annual fee. Still had this in my Amex offers and decided to go for it. BTW in the terms it specifically states “Additional Card Members must be added all at once” which seems pretty important if you want to get extra bonus points.

I didn’t see this in the terms when doing the same offer for Amex Hilton, and did separate applications, made the MS for the cards, but didn’t get the extra bonus for the 2nd AU I added.

Saw this offer in my Amex Offers. Added 4 gold AUs and got hit with this:

“Pending personal verification of your application, the following Additional Card(s) will arrive at your primary billing address in a plain white envelope displaying the American Express Blue Box logo, addressed to each individual below, and with a return address in Omaha, Nebraska.”

Adding 4 AUs as opposed to 2 or 3 likely triggered this. So word of warning for those added 4 AUs.. make the names appear legit and not so pet-dog-gy.

I never got an email but I see the offer in my “Amex Offers” today.

Per OMAAT: http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/2017/08/17/amex-platinum-card-authorized-user-promotion/

I wasn’t previously targeted, but I clicked through his link and there it was. If you weren’t previously targeted, it’s worth trying again.

Now a question: I have an AU I never activated. Can I cancel that and re-apply with the same name?

While adding the authorized users, I noticed the following language: “Additional Card Members must be added all at once by 10/20/2017”. That’s pretty alarming; I wonder if that’s going to make most of people who phase it out ineligible. Also, do terms of the original offer email/page even include that? Note: Just to clarify, I’m emphasizing adding AUs “all at once”.

Any DP’s on getting the AU bonus without SSN and let the card cancel after 60 days?.

DP: I received the offer on my Platinum card and added 3 users. I initially had issues getting the cards through the link in the email, so I added the cards through my online account.

After calling in to activate the cards I mentioned the issue to a supervisor and she said that while she was no longer seeing the offer on my account, she was going to manually add the 15,000 points to my account anyways. I didn’t even have to make the $500 spend per card 🙂

I was targeted, but when I click through to add the AU, there is no mention of the bonus points after meeting spend. Is this the same for others?

Does the authorized Gold cards have foreign free transactions?
