[YMMV] American Express Business Platinum: 50,000 Points Bonus For EXISTING CUSTOMERS

The Offer

No direct link, check your e-mails (subject line is ‘<first name>, earn 50,000 extra points with your Business Platinum Card(R)’

  • American Express is offering existing business platinum cardholders a bonus of up to 50,000 points. Bonus is broken down as follows:
    • 40,000 Membership Rewards points after $5,000 in spend
    • Extra 10,000 points after an additional $5,000 in spend
  • Spend period is July 15th until October 15th

The Fine Print

  • No need to enroll in promo, as long as you received e-mail you are eligible
  • First Tier: Earn 40,000 Membership Rewards points after you use your enrolled Card to spend at least $5,000 (the “First Tier Spend Requirement”) on qualifying purchases* between 07/15/17 through 10/15/17 (the “Offer Period”);
Second Tier: Earn an additional 10,000 Membership Rewards points after you use your enrolled Card to spend at least an additional $5,000 (the “Second Tier Spend Requirement”) on qualifying purchases* during the Offer Period.

Our Verdict

It’s extremely rare to see spending bonuses for existing customers this high, this is the sort of bonus you’d expect for new cardholders. What’s even more interesting is that it doesn’t seem to be only targeted for people with their AF becoming due during the offer period either. First bonus is an extra 8x membership rewards per $1 spent which is incredibly good and the next 10,000 bonus is an extra 2x per dollar spent (works out to be 9x or 3x on all purchases) so still great just not as great as the first tier. I’ve been saying that American Express has been becoming increasingly desperate and generous with their promotions in an aim to keep cardholders happy and sign up new accounts and this is just an extension of this, enjoy it while it lasts.

Hat tip to all the readers who sent this is, legitimately there is too many to name but it really means the world to me that readers think of me and this site when they receive a good deal.

Extra 10,000 points after an additional $5,000 in spend not $10,000

i expect this is for folks near their annivesary date? to be honest, this would suffice in keeping me as an AF-paying customer

lots of us who applied 6-ish months ago for the public 100k offer were targeted 🙂

Wow cant believe I was targeted for an offer this good. Just got 100k signup bonus a few months back.

I don’t see it, but then my card is only 3 months old.

I wasn’t targeted, but hope everyone else did. This would be a fantastic offer.

Such offer only hurts people ineligible.

Any thoughts on whether or not it is safe to MS to get the bonus?

Was so shocked to see this in my inbox. Wife had card almost as long as me 7 months but did not get. So random.

I know its a small portion but the AT&T $200 =2000 points and Intermedia 200 = 20,000 point offers could cover $600-$800 of the MS.

Any idea how they target all of these spend bonuses? I’m wondering if they’re only sent to people that aren’t already spending a lot. I put $10k-$20k a month on Amex cards and have NEVER seen a spend bonus.

And not a single dollar is MS, either.

This stuff is starting to make me mad tbh.

I doubt it’s for people who rarely spend. Haven never put spend on my Biz Plat. Only have it for the 50% rebate. I didn’t get this spending offer.

Ivan X

I also don’t spend on it, and also only have it for the 50% rebate. I got the offer. (I’m also one of those who got it during the 100,000 point public signup, which seems to be a common thread here.)

This explain why I got target for 150k for 15k spending for biz platinum(100k for 5k, the. 50k for another 10k spending). Not sure if should be happy or sad since this offer and united 70k came at the same time 2 days after I pad my contractor! Spending another 18k in three months is just not possible.

Ivan X

Can you ask your contractor to refund because you need to use a different card, and offer to eat his costs associated with doing so?

James
James

I don’t think it is possible since the contractor did not charge me in one payment(3k+2k+5k) My united 70k offer end 07/31/17, and Amex biz plat end 09/31/17. I might just apply for united 70k first, then apply Amex biz on the last day. Though, I just gonna get 100k for 5k, not entire 150k.

I think you have mistake on one of the bullets near the top that says “Extra 10,000 points after an additional $10,000 in spend”. I think it is an additional $5000 in spend for the extra 10,000 points ($10k spend total).

Checked and saw nothing.I don’t think I am targeted.

What’s interesting to me:

E-mail seems to be the only communication channel for this targeted offer so far, does that mean whoever disabled marketing communication is guaranteed NOT to be targeted?

This is what my communication preferences look like now, so I guess I’m really not targeted :/

Have had my Business Platinum card since October 2016 and wasn’t targeted. I was an unfortunate soul that had 50,000 points of my bonus clawed back due to too many charges of $504.94 at Walmart though, so I think that’s why I was not targeted. My wife got the card in February and we were careful to make sure we purchased gift cards along with groceries and never had any clawback problems. She received the targeted offer email yesterday around 6pm. Maybe that’s one factor.

How much was your bonus? 100k or 150k? Why would they claw back 50k and not the rest?

Daniel
Daniel

Git was the 100k bonus and they clawed back 50k. I did have some legitimate expenses on there as well (probably more than $5k due to paying for a PhD program), but I guess there were enough Walmart Visa gift cards in that second $5k of spending that they felt justified in clawing back points

DSP

Strange… Most of my $15k min spend was 5039.5 charges at simon and they didn’t claw anything back. I used the public 100k offer FWIW
