[YMMV] Upgrade you American Express Hilton Honors to the Ascend or Aspire and Get 150,000 Bonus Points

Update 1/23/22: Deal is back, people have been sent an e-mail. Subject line is ‘You’re invited to upgrade. Earn 150,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points.’ There is a unique 14 RSVP code on each e-mail so link can’t be shared.

The Offer

No direct link. Shows up in amex offers

  • Some American Express Hilton cardholders are being offered to upgrade to the Hilton Ascend or Aspire card and receive a bonus of 150,000 points after $4,000 in spend within the first three months

Our Verdict

Nice deal if targeted. The nice thing about upgrade offers is that it’s possible to get the upgrade bonus even if you’ve received the sign up bonus on that card previously. For more information on upgrade offers in general, you’ll find this linked post highly helpful.

Just called, nothing for Surpass or no fee Hilton. Nothing in Offers either.

Nothing for me (had both Surpass and Aspire before) nor P2 (never had Surpass or Aspire before)

I haven’t been targeted for this yet but I also haven’t applied for either the aspire or surpass cards ever so maybe that’s a good thing. Hoping to apply for one of those cards this year.

Got this but it was upgrading from the base card to the Surpass. 150k/$3k spend.

Not all bad… they might offer you another 150k to go surpass->aspire down the road. Happend to me a few years ago, and I didn’t say no.

Bummer. No dice. Been hoping for this upgrade for the last year now. No luck.

150k doesn’t seem to go as far as it did a year or two or three ago. At least for east coast domestic. Has Hilton devalued since 2019? Thats the last post I see on it.

Hello, I agree. I live in HI so all of the hotels cost a lot of points in general but hilton especially is costly.

150k is barely more than a single night at a top-tier property. But if you have the expense and income to meet spend requirements, the offer is still worth it because it doesn’t cause a HP and doesn’t count as a new account (i.e. doesn’t impact 5/24.) I never MS Amex myself because the risk of FR is much higher than the cost of just shifting my expenses to Amex for a month or two.

I guess what are you expecting from a bonus? Are there any cards where you will get multiple nights at the best properties?
Took a look at Hawaii and sure you wont be able to stay at some resorts, but Hilton Waikoloa is 70K and $800/night. Even bad value 70K you are getting a $300/night room. Bare minimum this bonus is $600 worth of points at bad value (up to $2k if you hit sweet spots), which is pretty damn good for $4k spend. I don’t think it is realistic to have an upgrade bonus where you are getting 3-4 nights at a top-tier property…..happy to be proven wrong.

The points are loosely tied to the cash price, so if cash price increases then points cost increases. It’s not a devaluation, it’s high demand.

Agreed. I stayed in Hilton Hawaiian Village last year for 58k a night but now it’s 70k a night. However the cash price has increased by like 20% or more… so it is price inflation which reflected in both points and cash rates.

No idea if they have gone down or not but I think Hilton is minimum .4 CPP. Was considering Miami next month and saw 1.5CPP but I don’t value high-end hotels. Bare minimum you are talking about $600 worth of hotel rooms (PLUS all the other benefits of the card) for a $450 card and some spend. Great deal especially if you are someone trying to stay under 5/24.
I will say Hilton seems to strategically put higher category/points on tourist locations since that is where people want to spend points.

Yeah, unlike IHG, Hilton has SIGNIFICANTLY devalued its points in the past year, especially for “everyday” hotels like their Hamptons. Makes the program much less attractive. The Aspire benefits are probably “worth” the annual fee if you’re going to game them, though. Like take $250 in “gift cards” for an airline, and $250 in resort credit, plus the free night and other smaller perks.

Does anyone know if upgrading will count against 5/24 or will it show as the same account as the original product? Thanks.

No it does not count towards 5/24, that’s the beauty of Amex upgrade offers

It’s the same account number, I downgraded from the aspire to the no fee. Then I upgraded back to the aspire. All the same acct number, no changes.

To add my info to the discussion…I’m targeted for the upgrade from the no fee card to the Surpass (which I’ve had multiple times). My offer is 150k points for $3k in spend. Also, it appears that I have until 03/31/22 to accept the offer. Just wanted to add a little more info.

I asked via chat and they just said it would show up in my card offers. I’m eligible for upgrade but no bonus attached. Guy said just check back every once in awhile. Not optimistic.

Terms also say they can pull the offer at any time, and they have done that many times in the past, so don’t wait until end of March if you want it.

Anybody have luck calling in to ask for an upgrade deal? Not targeted (yet?), but definitely looking to get the Aspire again at some point in 2022 as I downgraded to the no fee in 2020.

Also curious if upgrading would affect the $8k for a free night offer – have some big spend in Feb that would put me over the top on that one. Could potentially use that to fulfill an upgrade offer as well.

call to ask about the 8K offer, it may cut it off, even though it is the same card number.
